Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

Game is running fine for me on DX11 with a 7950 overclocked to a 7970, maxed out stays at 60 FPS most of the time with some dips to 45 for no reason, I disabled MSAA though :/

Amazing shaders Ubisoft. I felt totally immersed by the graphics.

The culprit is Ambient Lighting... DX11 or DX9. No matter what.

So, running the game on mostly high, 720p with my gtx560, it's great...except, sometimes, characters and enemies will...double? They will start to split apart at seperate camera angles, and shimmer back and forth between two positions incredibly quickly. I tried to record it, but it didn't come out. I'll try recording at a higher framerate next time.

Has anyone seen this? It's pseudo-rare. I was also driving along and the world started to show me its wireframes, but quitting and reloading it fixed that.

EDIT: The wireframe thing actually looked identical to the post above mine, that's it. You say it's ambient lighting...but what setting should I put it to? Higher or lower?

Hum I'm gonna try DX9 but then I'm loosing absolutely all the bloom effects (lighting, light sources) and it looks also ugly...

you really arent losing much at all.

yeah this happens. Annoying when you try to snipe someone

So it's just a straight bug, and not something with my setup? Cool, thanks Salsa. I appreciate it. Now to find a longer cord for my headphones, cuz MAN does this game make my card scream.

what freaked me out is that Dennis started doing it as soon as he stopped talking to me. It was freaky.

and yeah my 680 is getting up to 83°C sometimes, game is killer

Same EXACT thing happened to me. I figured my game was completely fucking boned. Card never goes past 66 here, but I am running at 720p and all. The fans going full throttle though to keep it that way.

I really should set up a custom fan curve but eh. Fans are staying on 65% or so and still make a big deal of noise. Im OCed tho so that explains the temps.

is it just me or does this game not look as good as Crysis with mster's config? The plants and tress barely move, there is no sense of wind...Crysis looks a lot better IMO, their SSAO implementation was better too

After the patch (I don't actually know if it made a difference, I only just started playing) I'm getting 30-45fps at Very High, DX9, 1080p, no special AA options selected.

Core 2 Duo e7200 at 3.8ghz
4gb
GTX560

I'm happy with this and unless everything goes to hell later on I'm not going to fiddle.

Screenshots with FPS in this folder.

670 with a i5-750 at factory clocks. DX9 with everything maxed out.

I get around 70-90 FPS in the forest and 45-60 in towns.

Normal?

Well I dont see how that's really surprising. This is a console port, Crysis 1 is a PC game.

Any dips in framerate? What's your average?

Honestly after the first 20 minutes I turned my FPS counter off. No noticeable dips in framerate, cept for when I fell off a mountain and my jeep exploded. The explosion dropped it to maybe 30ish, but only for maybe a second or two. Grenades, molotovs don't touch the framerate and neither does C4. Seems vehicle explosions do, but only a tiny bit.

so i rolled back my drivers from the beta ones (supposedly delivering a performance boost in FC3 specifically) and my DX11 performance jumped about 8 fps. so....yeah.

i'm now on DX9, but has anyone successfully gotten SGSSAA to work with this game? anytime i turn it on water disappears. using iron sights makes the WHOLE screen blurry and i get spastic shading issues whenever i'm under anything that casts a shadow.

i'm 60fps locked with 8xCSAA and FXAA forced through inspector, but it doesn't look as good as having the SGSSAA turned-on (minus the water disappearing, etc)

weird crash. Was sort of a driver crash since it was just pure black screen and the res got back to native (I was downsampling) and framerate halved for some reason, had to exit the game

The water wasn't to shabby in Crysis either: Link

On 310.70. 3820 @ 4.3GHz, 3x670 4GB @ 1100MHz. Ultra everything, 1080p

Just got through the first hunting mission. Framerate has been anywhere from 70-115 fps, with some drops below 60 when I kill something.

Going to install my benching RAM so I can get it up to 4.9GHz and see how it fares. Then I'll mess with some settings to get it to go no lower than dat 120 fps.

I just installed a 660 ti today and I have an i-5 3.0 ghz and 6 gb ram. Which settings make the biggest difference in FPS? I am trying to run at 1080p/60fps.

I just ran through every setting going from low to high (or ultra or whatever was highest for each thing).

Here's what i found on my 650ti, 3.6ghz i7, 8gb ram. All of this in DX11 (I did stuff in DX9 as well, but I dx11 looks much better imo)

MSAA each bump costs my machine about 5 FPS.

HDAO/HBAO(?)/SSAO

HDAO costs me about 3-4 FPS but looks markably better than HB and SS, which both look indentical to me and had the same FPS.

In the video options....

The biggest culprits were:

Shadows (each bump up cost me about 3-5 FPS)

Post FX (another 3-5 per bump)

Water (bigger bumps when you get to high or very high)

So basically what i found with my machine is i could run DX11, SSAO, 2x MSAA, shadows medium, post fx low (couldnt see a dif between low and med), water low and be pegged at 60fps.

Instead I decided to go HDAO, Shadows high, Post High, Water high and I get 45 fps. I guess im part of the problem, I prefer pretty to FPS. :/ Though obviously 45 FPS is plenty smooth.

Have the game up and running on my 2010 Macbook Pro with boot camp. All graphics are at low and had to lower the resolution a step but it is playable! I'm glad that i'm able to play at all but I really look forward to building a desktop after the new year.

So for anyone curious, the game is somewhat playable with a laptop like this:

Intel i7 2.66
Nvidia GT 330m
4GB DDR3

yeah i was getting 45-49fps with ultra (post fx on medium), 4x MSAA, SSAO and alpha to standard. i might go back.

This game is so strange.

I originally tried to play the game on 1920x1080 on DX9
- Was getting 20-30fps

Then I started running the game at 1280x720 last night (Core2Duo 3.0GHz, GTX 560Ti, 8GB RAM)
- I was getting 30-40fps on DX9

Today I boot it up, start getting nauseous
- Set the game back to 1920x1080 on Low Settings, set FOV to 110
- Now i'm still at 30-40fps

I don't understand it, not one bit.

Game's driving me nuts with blur and stuff, and the fact that my TV I use to play on has ghosting problems, and I can't find a comfortable FOV. Currently at 80.

3750K, GTX 670, 8GB

and I get a steady ~50 FPS with DX11 at 1080p but it feels choppy, not fluid at all. if I vsync it up it feels less choppy but I lose 20 frames, lol. might do away with the DX11 riff raff tomorrow and see how I like that.

It's driving me nutty. So I got a new monitor and ram today.

Monitor is a Viewsonic VA2703(1080p)

picked up an extra 8 gigs of ram.

Ram installed everything is working fine.
While playing Far Cry 3 I get the descending white lines that change in brightness from annoying to dim(best way to describe it)

I think it is a refresh issue with my monitor. I have not clue how to change it. Go into Nvidia and the only choice I have is 60hz. Can someone, for the love of gaming, point me in the right direction?

I7-920@4.2Ghz
12 gbs ram
GTX 680
Win7

See if there's a driver for your monitor, test out other games and report back

Have these been posted yet?

No HUD files, I know the youtube was linked but these should save people some time
http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3023873

Icon removal mods
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/734046-Mods-for-Far-Cry-3

I just tested out the top one and like an idiot I didn't back up the file, can someone post the FC3.dll file (dx9).

btw it looks amazing without the hud but it has an issue, you can't skin animals or collect plants...damn it would have been perfect.

I keep seeing this, but in my situation DX9 does not result in better performance. Both DX9 and DX11 perform exactly the same.

My specs:
Intel i7 860
AMD HD 5870 (12.11 Beta Catalysts)
Windows 7 64-bit

I Highly doubt you are getting better performance. I'm not calling you a liar, but for whatever reason, this game likes to let you think your running in DX11 when your not. People with substantially better setups than you and I are getting worse performance on DX11 than DX9.

Though, that entirely depends on what settings you have selected in game.

Booting up the game for the first time now. Took forever to get it from Ubishop/uplay since I had a code from the AMD promo.

Anyways what can I expect with this rig, I know everyone asks this, but I was not up on this at launch and this thread is long now. OP has no info so asking for help so I dont need to fiddle as much with the settings to get palying.

GTX 480
8gb ram
3570k 3.4ghz

Downloading 310.70 now as well.

Finally somebody with the same GPU :) may I ask your settings and fps?

Yes sir! We 5870 owners are a rare breed these days.

These are the settings I'm using:
Video
Video Quality

My average frame rate is roughly 50 FPS, although in some areas it drops down into the 40s.

Also, all of my specs:
Intel i7 860
8 GB RAM
AMD HD 5870 (12.11 Beta Catalysts)
Windows 7 64-bit

Although it might be difficult to believe, I can assure you that DX9 and DX11 perform identically on my machine. I just ran a few tests, as a matter of fact, to help prove it. Below are the results of four different locations I visited, each in DX9 and DX11 mode.

Location 1:
DX9: 41 FPS (Screenshot)
DX11: 42 FPS (Screenshot)

Location 2:
DX9: 49 FPS (Screenshot)
DX11: 49 FPS (Screenshot)

Location 3:
DX9: 53 FPS (Screenshot)
DX11: 52 FPS (Screenshot)

Location 4:
DX9: 53 FPS (Screenshot)
DX11: 55 FPS (Screenshot)

As you can see, the frame rates are more or less the same, regardless whether I'm using DX9 or DX11. I made sure to restart the game when switching to DX9, too, just like it says to do. If you're curious about the video settings I'm using, refer to my response below.

All those shots look DX11 - the fraps number only has a black background in DX11 executables, it's otherwise a transparent background.

Very interesting. Could you or anyone else try taking DX9 screenshots to see if the black border is behind the frame rate overlay like in mine? If DX9 truly just isn't working for me, that's weird.

It looks like you are unwittingly either running in DX9 or DX11 for both sets of shots. You need to restart the uplay client for changes in directx mode to take effect before relaunching the game. True.

I did not know this. I thought simply restarting the game without closing the client would change between dx11/9.

I was wondering why I couldn't switch between the two no matter what I did. Good to know.
