Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

In case you didn't see, I posted my findings at the end of the last page. :)

So it's a littke bit better then, good? You might also like to drop the shadows to say medium for a few extra frames?

I'll also post again as a reminder, get rid of the HUD... It has increased my enjoyment of the game ten fold, it's so much more immersive just wandering through the jungle.

Just how inconsistent is this game? I'm running everything on very high for some reason and it's playing well, but I need to reformat to install an SSD. Should I be scared that it will magically run worse afterwards? Because I really don't get how it's running so well right now...

i5 2500k at stock
AMD 6970 stock
8 GB RAM

So I have a gtx680, 16gigs of ram and a core i7 3770k.. I just played the intro on ultra with 8x AA and vsync and a whole bunch of other crap i have no idea about.. the framerate seemed pretty bad. What are the best go to settings? My rig defaulted to ultra mode, but the post processing stuff I think is whats making it seem a little choppy. I have yet to run it with fraps to see the damage.

The 8x MSAA comes at massive cost. Try turning it down to 2x.

If you have PostFX at medium or up you also have FXAA enabled. Try setting it to Low and see if you prefer the clearer IQ that comes with a loss of DoF, FXAA and Motion Blur

similar rig, I decided to go DX9 + downsampling route. Difference is barely noticeable and it gets rid of the aliasing without really sacrificing performance (as in, it rarely gets under 60)

Sutton Dagger, cheers for sharing your settings. They're working out well for me.

That's great to hear.

It's probably time for some settings to be posted into the OP? We could have a breakdown of the best settings for different setups. I'm not well versed in AMD's offerings (someone could help with the equivalent) but we could have low (gtx 400 series and below), medium (500 series), high (600 series) and Extreme (crazy SLI setups)?

That way as many people as possible can get the optimal performance for their rigs.

What does gpu buffering and alpha to coverage do exactly? I just turned off vsync, put msaa to 2x and I'm averaging like 57fps it looks like now.

I have gpu buffering at the highest and alpha to coverage set to enhanced.

Ok, turned post effects down and have vsync set to one frame. It seems to be a fairly stable 60fps. The motion blur and dof stuff does kinda bug me so it doesn't seem like much is lost. All the different types of AA are confusing.

Island 2 gives me Crysis 1 vibes sometimes. It's quite a lot more a military setting.

I'd like to set the PostFX to 1 or false. Probably just 1... but I want to play with FXAA ( I know some people hate it but I'm one of the few that actually likes it in some cases) I don't see it anywhere in the .XML file. Can someone help me out here.

Also I'm running a 5850, whats better performance wise? SSAO or HDAO? Thanks in advance.

Is that all the PostFX setting changes, the quality of those effects?

Cool. So no significant loss in shadow detail when you go Medium?

seems like i found the source of all my stuttering and jankiness. lowered post-fx to low, with everthing else set on high , and the game runs much smoother now. especially while travelling through wide open areas

Still can't find out how or what to put in the XML file to have FXAA on without the PostFX being on high or medium. My google searching skills suck I guess. Plllzzz help someone

cant seem to find away around all this screen tearing. when i put vsync on in invariable starts locking it self at 30fps.

Well it's not your CPU then :)

Copy my settings into your config, they are 5 or 6 posts above yours and let me know how you go.

Tried copying it over (reset the file to read only) but there were no improvements. The frame rate stayed exactly the same as my previous settings. It's like certain properties in the GamerProfile.xml file are being ignored.

Sounds like you're settings Vsync to level 2 rather than 1.

Put this in your config.

<Post>
<quality GameDepthOfField="0" DepthDownsample="1" CinematicDepthOfField="0" FXAALevel="0" CloudShadows="1" MotionBlur="0" id="medium" />
</Post>

Change the FXAA level (2,4,8)l and id to low.

Though I'm not sure why you would want FXAA when you can inject SMAA for much cleaner results?

This may sound like a really basic question but I'm just double checking :)

You changed the config to 'read only' after you posted in the new settings and saved right?

Did you lower the resolution to 1920x1080 in the config or leave it at 2560x1440?

No, I tried it with both. I thought I was golden for 60 with it set to one, but the second I got into a little battle it dropped to a 30fps cap. Gonna fiddle with dx9 mode in a bit, the game is fun but I feel like I can't be fully immersed until I settle on my settings. I keep pausing a fiddling around with them ever few minutes.

So if I turn down PostFX to low I get this really bad effect on things in the middle distance. Usually on the straw huts and stuff where it looks jagged as fuck.

PostFX to medium/high fixes it, but drops performance a lot. Is there some other way to get rid of that fuzziness?

Is there a trick to getting injectSMAA to work with DX11? I tried it and the game was just a black screen. DX11 runs a bit better for me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwLyNm6YZ1A

It's the video I posted a few pages back, nothing new for a lot of you guys, but for this person in particular it might help. Imo it's a significant loss in shadow detail at medium. Jarring LOD distances too. In all honesty I just can't go any lower than high. But ultra is anything but ultra. The awful LOD distance is still there, just less awful. I'd settle for Very High or High.

I've been trying to do another video comparison but what's there to compare? What are the differences in vegetation, environment and terrain? They all look the SAME no matter the settings. I hate graphical settings thrown in just for kicks, actually doing nothing to help, and even making things more confusing.

So I finally got AA working via Nvidia Inspector. (0x0000800) but now I have no reticle when I use weapon sights. Fuck mang, funny thing is my accuracy was still pretty damn good regardless.

....Somehow my screen tearing went away. I'm pretty sure I didn't just get used to it either.

I sometimes have a strange bug with the npc's. They start to shake/move in place really really fast, so fast you can see through them. It usually happens when they do some animations while they don't move.

Like, they are sitting on a chair and moving their legs.

Yeah it's a common bug, doesn't seem to affect anything else though.

Where do I put the two patch files?

simply navigate to

X:\steam\steamapps\common\Far Cry 3\data_win32

back up your patch.dat and patch.fat and then drop the new ones from the zip in =]

I generally rename the files with .old on the end instead of moving them.

This is a game that could support some great modding too; A Fauna overhaul ala Skyrim would be bonkers. Crysis 2 had an ok community, hopefully some of them would want to jump over; but it is truly the Skyrim people I need on this :(

A skills overhaul could make this game crazy.... I am thinking skills that let you fly; the engine can pull off the handglider...

New sidequests, new caves... to think of it Ubi, cannot deny being HEAVELY inspired by Skyrim.

You can turn that off in the option menu :) If you do, the only way to get x-ray vision is to use the camera.

Yep, this morning I found out what that option was really doing, but sometimes I use the camera for a quick look around. What can I tell, I got used with them, because of the other two FC. At least there, the enemies where appearing on the minimap only. :(
