Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

Um, what makes you so sure that such a setting exists in the first place? It's not like developers sit around thinking of new ways to drain performance without increasing image quality. Anyway, if you need more FPS, the most dramatic changes you can make are to make sure MSAA is disabled, keep ambient occlusion at any setting other than "HDAO," keep your "PostFX" quality setting at "medium" or lower, or keep your "shadows" quality setting at "high" or lower. These changes will all definitely have a "discernibleo impact" on image quality, however.

I know people mentioned lowering Postfx and didn't seem to notice much of a difference in quality. I just wanted to know if there were other settings that could be dropped or enabled through gpu for performance gains. I realize there is going to be some quality trade off , but sometimes it's not worth the performance hit.

I would be interested in this info as well.

Just for your info.

I have:

i-5 3.0 ghz
6 gb ram
660 ti

I was running Ultra presets at 1080p with HDAO and 2x MSAA on and getting 30-40 fps.

Turning off MSAA and lowering PostFX to Medium got me 50-60 fps about 90% of the time and I saw a few drops into the 40s.

The reason the performance is better is because DOF is turned off and you get less jaggies because FXAA remains on. False isn't a real setting that's used by the game, so it just defaults to something else.

the game needs the postfx, I set it to very high and shadows at very high instead of ultra. Seems to be running really well ATM

I finally gave in and changed PostFX from High to Medium, Everything else is on High & Very High settings, HDAO, MSAA disabled, now getting a solid 60fps (1920x1080), Good enough for me it feels a lot better than the jerky 45-50fps before.

My specs:

i-5 3570 3.4 ghz
ASRock p67 extreme4 Gen3
G.SKILL RipJaw X series 8GB 2133
EVGA GeForce 560GTX 2gb

Game looks to be running at a silky smooth 60fps@1080p with no dips on highest possible settings and 2xaa. Would like to see if I could check the real fps, anyway to check that?

Edit: Running SSAO as well. HDAO and HSAO looked terrible, awful, disgusting...

You sure you don't have the Vsync set to 2 and getting a solid 30fps? That setup is literally impossible to keep 60fps at max settings with 2xAA.

Use Fraps or MSI Afterburner/Precision X to check FPS.

I don't have vsync turned on. Maybe my eyes are deceiving me but it looks to be running very smooth and higher than 30 even during heavy gun fighting and explosions all over. I will try fraps when I get home and come back with the results.

Edit: why is it literally impossible for my pc to run the game at 60? Video card isn't the best I know but the rest of my setup seems up to the task.

HDAO is the most 'accurate' of the 3 but also has a bigger performance hit, SSAO is the worst in terms of over exaggerating thick shadows everywhere.

Coming in 1.04 supposedly. Hopefully by then they will fix the problems with PostFX performance issues. About to complete the game, but plan on going back through co-op with a friend in a few months.

Really wish they would've fixed my launch problem in the new patch. I've been getting the error "You do not have sufficient access privileges. Please contact an administrator." for almost a week. I haven't even seen a loading screen for this game that I legally own.

Well i guess they didn't explicitly state when the HUD stuff was coming. But that's annoying. They certainly made it sound like it was going to be the next patch.

I wonder if the corrected note should be 3 or 2 cores? 32 does seem a little odd. Maybe some kind of performance boost for those with tri or quad-core cpus?

No, it's correct, the lead engine programmer at DICE had the game crashing all the time and Ubi diagnosed the issue via Twitter and then put an official fix in this patch.

Apologies upfront if I have missed this, but going through 41 pages and picking up all the info without missing somthing is kinda hard.

I am pretty happy with the performance of the game on my PC with one exception. The draw distance of items. I'm not talking about distance scenery I mean textures and models which seem to "melt" into existence while running through the game. It is hard to explain the effect, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Out of interest I am running the game in Very High, with HDAO/MSAA 2. My system is based upon MSI Lightning 7970 Gpus and I am using the latest CATS.

I'm wondering if there is a specific setting which relates to this. Perhaps something I can tweak in the config file.

Cheers!

Pretty sure that's the geometry setting, which you'll find in the settings menu, in game. If i'm wrong though, someone please correct me.

I used fraps and your right I get about 35 average. Guess my eyes can't see the difference between 30 and 60 fps which is good for me I guess lol a lot of things will look smooth to me.

just changed from a 720p monitor to a 1200p monitor. obviously i turned down some of the settings and got it down to a smooth framerate, with one exception: every minute or so the game will pause for a second and then play catch-up after. it's really annoying. i think i remember reading about this problem earlier in the thread, but is there a way to fix it?

I have been messing around with the game all night and trying various settings but I can't get rid of this micro-stutter. Even when I put everything to low or medium I still get it. I checked Steam and Ubi forums and mainly just found people complaining about it and wishing death on Ubi. Anyone have any ideas?

Specs:
i7 930 4ghz
GTX 580 overclocked
12GB ram
Nvidia beta driver (310.70)

I have similar specs. Gameplay was jerky when swinging the mouse back and forth. Maybe I don't really know what micro-stutter is, but I changed out my wireless mouse for a nice new wired mouse. It made all the difference in the world. Plays like butter now.

OK so has there been much progress in getting this game running as it should in dx11?

I'm using dx9 as I get a solid 60 with everything except postfx maxed.

Framerate is always my first concern and I could care less if I get the fancy lighting, but if it is possible to get a solid 60 with dx11 I'd go that route.

i5 3570k
gtx480
8gb ram

Maybe asking for too much to get a locked 60 in dx11 with high settings on my card, but I feel like it should be able to pull it off. It does so in other dx11 games that frankly looka s good of better than Far Cry 3.

So I haven't really been following this thread, could some people help me out please?

I am running Dx9 on Optimal ,which is mostly Very High/High settings.

My rig is:

AMD 6870 XFX 1GB
Q6600 2.4GHZ
4GB DDR2 RAM
Windows 7 ultimate.
Is there an INI file to tweak? How do we tweak the graphics settings outside of the game? (Not with CCC or Nvidia settings) . Also is there a standard list of the settings we can tweak etc?

The OP would be good if updated with this information if possible :)

Thanks guys.

Wow. So even FC3 is plauged with stuttering issues? I don't even dare to buy PC games on day 1 anymore.

FC2 still has stutter as well for me - in DX10, it's okay in DX9 (FC3 stutters in both DX10 and DX9 for me). I hope there's no plans to carry on work with the Dunia engine for FC4, because if there are then you can bet that will have stutter too.

Don't really know if it's a engine problem since it seems that at least 50% of all recent PC games has this issue. It's ridiculous.

Do you run your PC all 24/7?

I found doing a restart fixes it for me. No clue why. But I keep my PC on 24/7 and the game had that same symptom. Doing a quick restart always fixed it for me. YMMV.

Does anyone know the cause of this? It just about ruins the experience for me in so many games, and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it.

I have a 670, so my rig isn't exactly a slouch, but even lowering the settings has no impact on whether the stuttering occurs in some games (e.g., it nearly drove me insane in Sleeping Dogs).

I don't recall seeing it other games I've played recently. I did have a similar problem with Oblivion and Skyrim earlier in the year but that turned out to be hitching when the game loads voice audio (it would happen every time I walked past a NPC that would speak to my character). I cured that by installing the games to a SSD.

No idea, but it's driving me crazy as well.

Core i7 3820 @4.4ghz
16GB Ram
3 x 3GB 7970 (but only using 1)

This game gets terrible stuttering with Crossfire which makes multiple GPUs worthless (the framerate increases, but it actually looks worse) so I'm just using a single 7970.

When I set it to DX9 and Low settings except for Textures on high, it blazes to about 150fps at 1080p, giving me the locked 120fps I crave on my 120hz monitor. The IQ may be shitty (although it still looks pretty decent) but once you go 120fps you don't go back.

It sucks that I have to make so many compromises, when BF3 (with 2 cards) runs at 120fps with all settings maxed out and looks so much better.

If I try to run the game with Trifire, it averages about 85fps with all settings maxed (Ultra, HDAO, 4xAA, Alpha coverage etc.) which sounds good but looks like stuttery garbage. And it's only using about 65% GPU load, a telltale sign of bad scaling. I hope they fix this so I can jack up the settings, I don't like to compromise.

Okay, Far Cry 3 wins. I was holding out for my next rig, but I'm bored and Crysis 3 will be for that PC anyway.

So I have:
i7 2600K @ 4.5 GHz
16 GB DDR3 1600 MHz
2x6950

Does crossfire work well? (goddamit, post above)

What settings should I get for 60+ fps while maintaining decent image quality?

It's almost come to the point that I would rather download games to see if they don't stutter, and purchase them afterwards if all is clear :-/ I feel terrible about it, but this really is the plauge of PC gaming. Kind of sad I bought Sleeping Dogs because of the stutter which STILL hasn't been fixed by the devs. Instead they are focussing on T-shirt packs and lame-ass DLC.

Single GPU
Low Post FX
Max everything else

Runs like butter.

I really wish they'd include a readme or flag stuff "this option isn't worth it".

Back to Jungle Uncharted Ass Creed.

Setting it to DX9 makes a big difference in performance, both in actual framerate and apparent smoothness. (Arkham City had the same issue). I actually haven't tried running in Crossfire in DX9 mode, maybe it looks much smoother. I can also tell you that two cards get better scaling and less stuttering than three. When I was playing with multiple GPUs, the framerate was bouncing around from 110+ fps to 35 and it was just awkward.

You should start with minimum settings and go up until it starts to drop below 60fps. Since I was targeting a locked (not average) 120fps I had no choice but to lower the settings, but for 60fps you can go higher.

You were getting stuttering in Sleeping Dogs with one card? I was getting stuttering in Crossfire but it's perfectly smooth with one.

I have it in DX11 with MsAA at 8x, but it seems that some things aren't processed for AA while others are.

I tried DX9 with 2x6950, but I had the same horrendous frame stutter (30+ fps for about a half of a second, pause for half of a second...very choppy).

I seem to be playing at 30-120 fps, with very rare dips below 60 fps.

Anyway, looks like I made the right call to play this game before my 2013 rig. My 2011 rig handles this fine and it's not anything exception, especially considering the hardware requirements.

Damn, just lost 5 hours of progress... so painful.

I didn't realize Uplay only synchs your save games when you quit the game. I hadn't quit the game in a long time and it crashed my system. After the reboot my progress is way back. Funny thing is, I see my save game locally, but the game isn't recognizing it for some reason. First time this happened to me in about 20 hours of play. Lesson learned; going to exit the game after every mission now.
