Rewatching season 1, Malvo mentions an "Indian" that committed some kind of violent murder, perhaps involving somebody skull or something...I don't remember, but I always thought that might be Hanzee.

Obviously not now, I'm guessing. Not sure I like that he gets cheesed so easily in the future.

Gotta say, I think they really brute forced Hanzee into Mr. Tripoli and the kids as Wrench and Numbers at the end there. It felt like continuity for the sake of continuity, not everything needs to be linked between seasons.

I enjoyed the rest of it though, it was a decent finale.

Kind of agree. Don't mind the kid links, but the other plot point kind of falls flat for me. It doesn't really make sense from a character standpoint, and it would've been better leaving that unlinked and having it be a separate story or crime empire.

Oh in case people were wondering, the story about the USS Kirk was real:

The dude literally took off his gear while he was flying the helicopter and then bailed at the last moment.

That was really almost like an epilogue more than a finale. The finale was more like last week's episode and then the first part of this up until Peggy get's rescue (sans the opening scene).

I liked it, but Hanzee becoming Tripoli just seems forced, even by Fargo standards. (And frankly, while I was largely sympathetic to him, that changed when he murdered Connie for no real reason)

Great finale. Ed's final moments were heartbreaking, telling Peggy they weren't going to make it as a couple. Peggy really was loony. I kind of expected Ed not to make it and for Peggy to get locked up, thought it was kind of fitting for all of Ed's bad luck to catch up to him and have Peggy live with what happened.

Glad Betsy lived through the season, we didn't need to see her go.

Milligan had some good moments, an act of cruelty and an act of kindness, a coronation - a desk in a tiny office.

Didn't make all the connections with Wrench and Numbers and Mr. Tripoli until I got back in the thread. But I gotta say I'm not crazy about Hanzee becoming Mr. Tripoli. After everything that's happened I would think he would just go somewhere and lay low instead of working his way back into the world of organized crime. Why would he care about taking out Kansas City when he did their job for them?

It's funny because the guy who told Hanzee about the empires rise and fall was basically foretelling what was gonna happen in the future.

I absolutely loved this season......I'm not sure if I liked what they did with Hanzee there at all though. I was kinda hoping for a more ambiguous ending for him, just disappearing to places unknown. I need to go back and rewatch the Tripoli scenes in season 1 to settle on how I feel about that (I'd like to rewatch all of season 1 now actually).

Mike Milligan's fate is horrific. For a man like him, this is hell.

I thought he was going to stab baldy in the eye with one of the pens on the desk.

He went out the worst out of anyone on the show.

I loved how the show ended with Lou finally getting some rest with his wife next to him.

so what happens to mike milligan is like what happens to another guy in a different fx tv show...
the shield

and now all those people who were clamoring for malvo vs hanzee have their answer.

also i'm not one of those people that needs every little thing explained, but i'm kind of dissatisfied with hanzee giving up the chase on ed and peggy and just deciding to change his life. i understand the whole changing his life thing was explained but i thought after the narrator speculated that hanzee wanted to kill them maybe because they got to see the real him exposed, they would explain it more. he just decided to give up after lou showed up and shot at him?

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
What a MESS of a finale.

Up until last week's ridiculous UFO drop I was ready to call this better than season 1, but after the UFO drop the season went downhill fast.

Hanzee being Tripoli is an unbelievable stretch. There was no need for it. We already had Betsy's dream of the season 1 cast which was the best scene in the finale. The other connections to season 1 were way too forced, yet no mention of Melvo at all or showing him as a kid or anything.

Hank's "visual language" was incredibly dumb. They set it up to make it look like it was tied to the UFO paranoia, but then it turns out to be THAT?! Sigh. 😧

Speaking of the UFO, up until episode 9 it could have been explained away as general paranoia which was prevelant in that area in the 70s. Even the first episode where Rye sees it could have been a hallucination as he's on drugs as I recall. When the UFO dropped it was shocking and a fun TV event but it damaged the show imo to suddenly introduce something so outlandish in a previously realistic series. Honestly, now that the UFO was confirmed real I was hoping it would abduct someone, honestly I was expecting Ed or Peggy to get taken. But we got nothing from it in the finale except one throwaway line.

Really disappointed.

Milligan survived, fuck yeah. He's gonna return someday I hope.

punished venom hank was pretty cool.

Didn't mind the Mr Wrench thing, but I don't buy that he's the final Tripoli. Someone else has gotta kill Hanzee and take that identity between 79 and 06.

Hanzee essentially just acting as a plot device driver in the last two episodes doesn't sit well with me. I don't mind ambiguity, but none of it really clicked for me.

I still think the UFO is non-sense. Overall Ed, Peggy, and Lou really did it for me and it was a good run. Still prefer the payoff in season 1 more though.

Edit:Kirsten Dundst was amazing this whole season. Absolutely solid every minute.

Whats with all the raising arizona, no country for old men references in this episode? I counted at least 3 shot for shot replications from No Country. Not sure if it was done unintentionally, being the coens and all. But yes, very anti climactic finale, but a great show.

This was realistic?

Also, this whole post is a stream of contradictions :lol

"The season one tie ins were way too forced. Where was mah beby Malvo?"

"The UFO was outlandish. I wanted them to abduct someone!"

The Hanzee becoming Tripoli thing doesn't work for me at all. Changing his name and getting some plastic surgery to reconfigure his face? Sure, no problem there. But this character then taking that new opportunity and using it to become a mob boss? That's just not Hanzee. And why, after the turns we see him take in the last couple episodes, does he want to go take down all of Kansas City?

I don't think anything done by the finale improved my view of the UFO stuff.

Good moments with Lou, Betsy, Hank, Peggy and Milligan. I'm glad we didn't have to see Betsy die, not sure if S1 established when exactly Molly's mother died.

- The beginning of the episode was kind of a fake out with the Black Sabbath blaring, getting everyone pumped up for a huge action scene. Awesome finale though, it didn't need much more carnage.
- I am glad they didn't pursue more alien intervention and they left it as a small sub-note to be forgotten.
- Kirsten Dunst deserves awards for her role. She played Peggy's delusions of grandeur perfectly.
- I am fine with the Hanzee ending. The main thing to take away from it is that he is going for a more complete changeover than just a "professional cut" could do. Without referring to the internet it would be hard to make his connection to Season 1, so that is just secondary. I find it fine that he ends up growing soft and dying as an old white mob boss.
- Hank's just trying to find a way to fix what he believes is the cause of senseless violence. Senselessness is definitely a major theme in this season, which makes the UFO okay in my mind as I think it either adds or represents that.
- I am glad that Lou's wife didn't die this season, it is enough knowing that she will to make her scenes tragic.
- Mike had the best ending, the split between his coronation scene and receiving his tiny office with an electronic typewriter is great. It ties in with the Reagan appearance well, emphasizing the shift from the old style of "family" business to one of profit mongering.

His intentions were foreshadowed when he asked for a professional-like cut from Peggy in the cabin.

Fucking loved that Raising Arizona epilogue homage at the beginning, captured that pacing and VO flow really well.

The Hanzee chase and lead up to Ed dying, Peggy hallucinating, and realization she is full tits on a boar insane was tragic, especially with her exchange with Lou in the car. Just damn sad.

Gotta say, had a good chuckle at Milligan's fate. His character mostly annoyed the hell out of me throughout the season, seeing that cocky psycho taken down in that way was some righteous justice.

Rest of the episode was def pure epilogue territory, could've been trimmed and aspects incorporated into other episodes such as Hank's language revelation. Hanzee's Tripoli transformation felt shoehorned in, not everything needs a "lookee here!" season callback. Overall a decent finale but certainly not one of the strongest in the season.

Hopefully this season will be looked back with as much reverence as True Detective season 1.

Every episode was downright awesome.

Er, he was making like he wanted to get away from the whole scene, not further embrace the midwest mob life.

Masterful episode and season. I need to watch the finale again as I might have missed out on some references and poignant storytelling (Have fever), but I loved this through and through. Excellent stuff. Will re-watch the whole season again when I can.

Is fucking stupid. Like really dumb. Did that facial reconstruction also change his hair color and give him male pattern baldness (Which native americans do not suffer from)??

Oh wait obviously he just shaves his head that way and dyes his hair all the time.

What a completely forced addition that added nothing to the character except to make a completely unnecessary connection with S1. I was so onboard with the rest of the season, and Hanzee as a character, but man that really took the wind out of my sails.

Kojima would be proud.

This was a really good season, but I enjoyed the first way more.

Not sure why the Hanzee/Tripoli stuff is bumping for so many people. Dude resents his lack of agency, rebels in a big way, and moves on from this season to build an empire of his own. Works for me. No need to have him "run off into the night" re: Anton Chigurh. Connecting it to Season 1 is just icing on the cake.

I just finished and I have to say I didn't like the finale, last week's episode felt more like a finale this just felt like an episode of exposition and forced tying threads to S1. The Hanzee-Mr. Tripoli reveal is stupid, in fact I had no idea who the hell that was until I came in this thread. It's just dumb, you expect me to believe that Hanzee became this fat fuck of a mob boss that looks nothing like him? Nah man, nah. I also can't say I was a fan of the flash forward either, we all know who Lou is and what will happen to him I don't need a forced visual tie in to S1. Still it's the only tie in that I could live with the rest was just stupidly forced.

All in all the finale just felt like something mechanical, an episode out of necessity to clean up the last episode and tie up the loose ends of all the characters.

I hope showrunners don't pay attention to these overwhelmingly negative public responses to finales that payoff on characters and emotional beats instead of just more shooting. I know they get great critical write ups but when they see a Twitter wall of "Finale sucked" "last week was sicker" "nobody cares ted danson go back to cheers and stfu" I hope they don't actually take it to heart.

I don't necessarily see that as the case. I kinda think the Tripoli guy from S1 actually kills Hanzee sometime before S1 and assumed some of his identity and details to take over the syndicate.

That would make wayyyyyyy more sense to me than facial reconstruction surgery, because c'mon. :p

Isn't this what we should want from a finale? We had a massacre last episode, did we need another shootout or shocking death?

I don't want a show like this wrapping up with a bunch of loose ends, especially because we know that Lou didn't spend the rest of his career hunting down Hanzee or something. I feel like almost no other series has so neatly put a bow on a season that is meant to end a story. Yes there are small bits that carry over back into the S1 time period but this should be a self-contained season and I feel like we got all the closure we deserved.

I wish they'd left it up to interpretation, but they literally share the same line of dialogue between seasons. Not to mention all the talk about how he'll have to get his bone structure etc changed. That does make way more sense but they're not really giving any wiggle room.

Everything else about them wrapping up his story seemed totally fine to me, but I don't understand how specifically making him that season 1 dude adds anything to his character and doesn't just act as a nonsensical contrivance to connect the seasons.

No.

I'm not expecting another shoot out or some shocking death and those that think it's what the finale needed are wrong. That said, a finale should feel, for lack of a better term, organic. It shouldn't be this exposition heavy thing that goes step by step making sure every loose end is tied up and every thread is tied to the overall mythos. Rather, it should naturally conclude the arc of its story with its characters whilst reinforcing the themes that it has expressed throughout its story. This finale did not feel that way and instead was more focused on showing us a lot of stuff we already knew about.
