Favorite album of the decade (this far)?

I hate to be predictable, but could I choose anything else? It's very possible I've listened to this album at least a thousand times since its release, and I'm not even close to being bored with it yet. The order of the tracks is perfect, and the songwriting is mindblowing.

Phantom Power is good/great, but can't compare to the madness of Rings Around the World. It was the consolidation of all SFA's best ideas, with all of the messiness of their less successful experiments (Guerrilla [which is an amazing, amazing album]) jettisoned.

Just looking at that album art makes me a little teary eyed. I liked SFA at the time of RAtW's release, but they were just another band to me. I feel like the genius of the band was revealed to me once RAtW came out. Every release of theirs pretty much blew my mind once I got this album. Gruff Rhys is seriously one of the funniest and smartest songwriters making music today.

Favorite lyrics:

I have no adjectives for you
And have no feelings
For the who you are

I feel no empathy for you
You make me realise
The who I am not.

Sympathy, sympathy
You want some:
Don't come to me

Don't try me for sympathy
I don't feel sorry for thee:

You deserve to die

We'll go to Miami
Take old friends and family
We'll stay out and party
Does Will Smith lie?
Does he ever break down and cry?

Monica and Naughty Billy
Got together something silly,
Holy wars out of lusty minutes
Another Cuban cigar crisis
Honestly! Do we need to know
If he really came inside her mouth?
How will all this effect me now and later?

Also, the bonus disc that comes with the U.S. album has some really fucking strong material. Their b-sides are pretty much some of the best songs in the entire world.

The Meadowlands. It's just a perfect record. I can't say enough about it. And because I'm running late, I don't have time to say anything, lollerskates!

I can't pick an album for this decade as my listening has dropped off significantly since I've met my wife. I used to be totally into music but now my attention span has wavered. I'll have to think about this and hear some more stuff from new artists this decade before I can make a call.

For the decade of the 90s it was between "The Holy Bible" by Manic Street Preachers and "OK Computer" by Radiohead for me.

Hmm, very difficult to pick just one so I'll list two:

Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place

Sweet jebus it's nice seeing so much Meadowlands love. You'll have to put me in that camp too. I remember listening to Meadowlands and thinking it's a record I know i'll be listeninig to 15-20 years from now. Timeless.

For the 90's, it would be much tougher. I'm leaning towards Endtroducing being the one. Fucking perfect.

If it helps any SFA are Welsh, like the Manics. :)

Duly noted. I've heard them mentioned by several different people but for some reason never checked them out. I will have to investigate this now that I have the "enjoy bell woods" seal of approval. Your avatar alone makes me trust your judgement in music.

I've seen that album - LP - around, swoon, but I have no idea what kind of music they make. I know they're from a city that's like 20 minutes from Dallas, where I live, but that's it.

This decade, and I don't care about what anybody says...

I'm not sure if you knew this, but pictures of an album with no discerning information on them is kind of annoying. Based on the mix cd you sent me I may just want to find more albums by bands you listen to so information like the band's name or the album title would be appreciated.

I noticed you use the first album art as your avatar at OM, though that doesn't help.

Easily my favorite of the decade.
Yeah, would rank high in mine too. I'm not sure yet, I'd have to think longer. I really like Spoon's Kill the Moonlight, Wilco's YHF, The Shins's Oh Inverted World, The Arcade Fire, both Libertines records...

I'll have to check out that The Wrens stuff, though.

I can't argue with The Meadowlands. I just played this album for like 4 months straight and nothing else.

How the hell these guys aren't massive sickens me. Some of the tripe that is acclaimed today wouldn't be able to match any of the shit on the Meadowlands.

Seriously, 'Happy' is like the best song ever. The opening line 'You're the one I want' sends a chill down my spine everytime I hear it. :)

Everyone must listen to this album!

The first one was Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, the second is The Arcade Fire's Funeral.

Christ, completely forgot about Tool. Damn, my love for rap is much too strong these days, but I can't deny the genius of Lateralus. The fiend of hip-hop has got me stuck like a crack pipe.

Would you rather there was only 1 music thread for every conceivable music topic? Perhaps the thread should contain 1000000000000000000 responses in it to save the need for creating more threads.

I prefer Phantom Power to Rings Around The World, myself.

It's damn hard to pick a favorite album of the decade. I'll go with Songs: Ohia's Ghost Tropic (even though it's probably not).

Not necessarily. Music threads were cool when we used to post them once every 2 weeks...now they're posted almost every other day it seems. :|

I never heard of this meadowlands album before, so I looked it up on amazon and listened to some samples but I can't really hear what you guys find so great about it....

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Funeral are close second and third, but The Meadowlands is the closest thing to a perfect album I've heard in the first five years of the decade.
