The local Oldies radio station switched to an "all Christmas song" format basically the day after Thanksgiving. Seems like financial suicide to me.....are there really people that sit around flipping out because they can't find any Xmas music on the radio? Do people want to listen to this stuff on the infuriating drive to/from their work?

OTOH, this means that even the poorest shop, laundrymat, and doctor's office can now pipe in constant Christmas tunes. And boy are they doing it....

So anyway, what songs (if any) do you like? What makes your skin crawl? Any recommendations?

Favorites

The Little Drummer Boy by Tori Amos is pretty good, though you probably will never hear it unless Clear Channel decides to put it on the playlist for Generic "Alternative" Station #2089.

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree is cool enough. Though it's ironic how the song doesn't do anything close to "rocking".

Doing laundry yesterday I heard some old big band sounding tune that I liked. It was about the Christmas blues....how the holiday just seems like a child's thing if you don't have someone to love....lamenting the loneliness of the season. If someone knows the name/artist, please tell me. There should be more sad Xmas songs.

Hated

(Simply Having) A Wonderful Christmas Time by Paul McCartney makes me want to slit someone's throat. I don't remember hearing it much in the past, but this year it seems to be fucking everywhere. The vocals and rhythm are terrible, and all the music comes from a circa 1989 Casio Keyboard. I can't imagine anyone liking the song, and assume that it would get no play if it weren't for the association with McCartney.

Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. This should need no explanation. Totally obnoxious, totally hokey. This horrifying novelty song should have been shelved years ago.

Pretty much all the religious songs, excluding "We Three Kings"

Favorite: J.S. Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Doesn't matter if it's being sung, played on the piano, or played by a consort, this is an inspiring piece of music.

Least favorite: Too many to list, mostly hideously bad arrangements of decent songs.

Favorite: Feliz Navidad!

Most Hated: Any modern artist that tries to do a christmas song with a modern "phat beat!" Die motherfuckers, die.

HATE: Feliz Navidad (I was a waiter in a mexican restaurant thru college)

LOVE: Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses. I'm also loving the Red Sox version of "Merry Frickin Christmas" by Frickin A.

Fave: "Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl, "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" by David Bowie and Bing Crosby, and "Spotlight on Christmas" by Rufus Wainwright. Also the whole Charlie Brown Christmas album by Vince Guaraldi.

Most Hated: Grandma got runover by a fucking Reindeer. Jesus that song sucks.

Hate: "Where are you Christmas" and "All I want for Christmas is you." As well, anything Kenny G. plays is really annoying, because it's played in most of the stores I go into over, and over, and over.

Love: SLEIGH RIDE. Sleigh Ride owns all your souls. I used to play the Tuba line in my high school band, and I can't stop humming it. It's upbeat, it's perky, it's cheery, it's Christmasy.

Brendonia

"Edge stole Big Ben's helmet"
I'm so glad (Simply Having) A Wonderful Christmas Time was put in on the first post.

I HATE that song and radio stations play it all the time.

Beyond that, favorites:

Carol of the Bells

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Love: The Raveonettes - "The Christmas Song"
Most Hated: Just about all of them, though the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas albums are like someone is fucking my ears.

The only Christmas song I like is John Lennon's Happy Christmas. I hate everything else.

Now before you say I have no spirit, you have to understand that I work at a place that has only played christmas music for the like month and a half. I hear the same damn songs at least 4 times a day everything time I'm there...each time by a different artist...like children singing it, a chorus, a pop star, a crooner....then the instrumental version.

Its enough to make you want to stalk from aisle to aisle with an Armalite AR-10 carbine gas-powered semi-automatic weapon, pumping round after round into colleagues and co-workers.

Dear god that was playing at some store and I about went batshit insane. The title is the song. FUCK YOU PAUL!

Favorite? Maybe Sting's We Three Kings. And yeah, Lennon's War is Over is nice, maybe because it feels a little bittersweet.

I propose that we try to fix the various carols that we hate with new lyrics. For example:

Hear that scream?
Are you listening?
On the lane,
Blood is glistening.
A horrible sight
We're fleeing for our lives
Running through a winter wonderland

Or, how about:

Your nuts roasting on a open fire
Jack Frost tearing off your nose...

Or maybe this:

Here comes Santa Claus,
Here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane!
If I hear this sung one more time,
I'll go fuckin' insane!

Feel free to expand on or redo further.

I like Weezer's Christmas Song, and pretty much all old, classic Christmas songs.

I hate "Christmas Wrapping", by the Waitresses.

Greenseleeves >> all christmas songs

Greensleeves isn't a Christmas song.

But "What Child Is This", which uses the same music, is.

Actually there are very few Christmas songs I hate. The religious ones hold a lot of nostalgia for me. Standards like White Christmas, I'll Be Home For Christmas, etc. as well. I also like the fun ones, like Jingle Bells, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Jingle Bell Rock, Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree, etc. I liked Simply Havin' A Wonderful Christmas Time when it first came out, but you're right, it is over played. I also like Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer :)

Which ones DON'T I like? Hard to say. I don't work in a store or mall, (and the one store I ever worked for didn't play music), and I don't spend lots of time in places where they do play Christmas music, so it doesn't really get "old" for me. I'm also not lonely or depressed, I have a wonderful wife and am close to my family so Christmas has never been a depressing time for me. I enjoy giving friends and family gifts. The commercialism of the holiday doesn't bother me because a) I'm not so religious that I'm offended by it, b) This is my 40th Christmas, so I'm kinda used to it, and c) I accept it as inevitable in a capitalist society.

So I really enjoy the season and all that goes with it. Sue me ;)
