Im curious to know - what are your favorite jazz songs of all time?
For me I know I can't go through the day with out some Coltrane or some Davis so here are my top favs:

Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come
John Coltrane - Blue Trane
Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong - Summertime (I love ella's voice, hence why I like their version the best)
Chuck Mangione - Feels So Good
Herbie Hancock - Dolphin Dance
Thelonious Monk - Bag's Groove

I know the crap I posted is pretty standard, but its what I prefer to mellow out. I like my jazz all Be-bop'ed.

So anyways..post your favorite guys =D

me too. I think it's cause Jazz is such an esoteric form of music to begin with, that listening to the more obscure shit will just further thrust you into obscurity.

Yeah Dolphin Dance is a great tune. But most of the shit from Maiden Voyage, and Speak Like a Child are pretty brilliant. great great albums

"Summertime" - what a great song!

I love that song, because singers can do so much with it. The Ella/Armstrong version is great, especially with their phrasing and annunciation.

I really like Billie Holiday's version though. The song has an upbeat tempo, but Billie sings it with a scathing/critical tone, which makes it sound like she is revealing some of life's hypocrises.

Have you ever heard Angelique Kidjo's version of Summertime? It is on a European disc "Jazz - A St. Germain" (the Paris jazz scene, you have to love it). It is a unique version of the song, that has haunting nature sounds in the background - which complement her African -influenced vocals. You get this amazing feeling when you listen to the song - like the song's hidden African roots are being unearthed for the listener.

Here is an Amazon link to the CD if you want to hear an excerpt of the song:

Speaking of Ella Fitzgerald, have you ever heard her live duet of "Lady Is a Tramp" with Frank Sinatra? I don't think this has ever been released on an album, but I came across it a few years ago on Kazaa. It's an unbelievable duet - and they sound great together....

Miles Davis - Blue In Green
Brad Mehldau - When It Rains
Soulive - Hurry Up....And Wait
Louis Prima & Keely Smith - Embraceable You/I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good
