Favourite game music composers?

Koji Kondo
Hibino and Williams
Noriyuki Iwadare
Yasunori Mitsuda
Motoi Sakuraba
Nobuo Uematsu
Yuzo Koshiro
Kenji Yamamoto
Hitoshi Sakamoto
Koichi Sugiyama
Martin O' Donnell, David Wise.
Last but not least, the Kukeiha club for their work on Castlevania.
And after hearing the Tales of Legendia soundtrack, I have become a fan of Go Shiina.

These are not all of my favorites though.

Koji Kondo is mathematically the best. Prove this by getting on a bus and doing the underwater theme from Mario Bros. Someone else will remember it, and every nuance of it.
You can do the same thing with "Oops, I did it again," but that wouldn't make it a good composition.

That is the cruellest thing ever said on GAF. Take it back.

He may have lost his touch since FF6/FF7 or whatever, but Nobuo did a FUCKING AWESOME JOB on the Advent Children version of One Winged Angel. Seriously, one of the best songs I've ever heard. Perfection the whole way through.

Koji Kondo
the one, who made the music for banjo-kazooie
the one, who made the music for F-Zero
the one, who made the music for Sonic 1-2

Yasunori Mitsuda simply for Chrono Cross which I consider to be the greatest soundtrack ever composed. Xenogears was good too. His newer album for Kirite is also really good.

Saori Kobayashi - Panzer Dragoon Saga and Orta.

And Uematsu ofcourse.

hip tanaka
yuzo koshiro
michiru yamane
hitoshi sakimoto
the various and anonymous composers who wrote various mega man and castlevania soundtracks

Marty O'Donnell (and Mike) - Myth:TFL, Soulblighter; Halo, 2 (imo, there is no better talent out there... period.)

Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy 9 intro is some super duper elite stuff)

Koji Haijima for 'Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec'

Zak Belica for the Myth 3 music ['March (Erhu)' is fuckin awesome!]

Matt Uelmen for all the Diablo music.

and so many people leaving off the amazing Jeremy Soule (Icewind Dale, Morrowind, Total Annihilation) is just disturbing!

p.s. i also like Amon Tobin's stuff from SC: Chaos Theory... especially 'The Lighthouse' which is amazing.

Uematsu, if only for Cid FFVII Theme. Greatest thing this side of PB&J's.

And pretty much everyone that everyone has already listed so far.

Ma' man, Yasunori Mitsuda. Chrono Cross and Xenogears are his best works.

main-photo.jpg

Hitoshi Sakimoto, with the brilliant Vagrant Story soundtrack. FFXII looks to please, as well.

uematsu.jpg

Somewhat lost his edge since FFVI, but Advent Children shows he's still got greatness. Really looking forward to what he has to show on next-gen.

Can't forget that man who composed probably the most catchy tune evar. I really hope Zelda's delay has to do with Kondo doing orchestrations!

Valkyrie Profile. Nuff said.

These guys made the last few hours of MGS3 so incredible. Best soundtrack of this generation.

Tsuyoshi Sekito (Brave Fencer Musashi)
Yasunori Mitsuda (Xenogears, Chrono Cross)
Whoever did the score for Unreal Tournament 2004
Masuharu Iwata (Final Fantasy Tactics)
Koji Kondo (Mario bros, Zelda games)
Matt Uelmen (Diablo 1,2)

Nubuo Uematsu losing his edge since FFVI? I don't know you but I think his work on the FFVIII soundtrack is one of his best yet that soundtrack is awesome FFVI is his crowning achivement though.

I agree.

First, as always... Noriyuki Iwadare

Motoi Sakuraba and Uematsu are way up there...
...I might make a list later...

BUT GOD. You guys are seriously forgetting some people...

Shoji Meguro (Shim Megami Tensei Nocturne, DDS and DDS2, others)
Kenichi Tsuchiya (Persona, etc)
And whoever did the Riviera soundtrack. Holy crap.

Rob Hubbard (Commando, Delta, Flash Gordon, IK+, Sanxion)

Ben Daglish (Last Ninja)

Yuzo Koshiro (Revenge of Shinobi, GG Shinobi, Streets of Rage 1-3, Shenmue)

Takenobu Mitsuyoshi (Virtua Fighter 1 & 2, Daytona USA, Shenmue)

And whoever the masters are that created the music in the Panzer series.

Hitoshi Sakimoto
Masahiru Iwata
Yasunori Mitsuda
Nobuo Uematsu (back in the day at least)
Yoko Shimomura
Michiru Yamane
+ Whoever composed Super Castlevania 4's soundtrack.

Yeah, I think Uematsu's best works came from FFIV - FFVI.

Please don't misunderstand me though, I'm not saying everything he has done since isn't any good; it just isn't as good as those his earlier works. FFVII was terrible mostly due to its synth (FFVII Reunion shows how much better those tracks could've been), and you're right, FFVIII was very awesome. I'm listening to it right now as I type this.

FFIX recycled the "Terra" theme so many times that I lost track, but it was still a great soundtrack. I think the "Battle" music is his best yet.

FFX was a rather mixed bag for him. I think he just needs to upgrade his synth hardware for the next generation. FFXI I'm not too familiar with what he has done, but the opening to that game, which I know he's done, was very good. Advent Children was also great.

So....that said, I still hold Uematsu up with the best. It's just that his stuff for FFIV - FFVI is too good to pass up.

Rebel Army from FFII is better than everything listed here, though.

Yasunori Mitsuda: Best thing to come out of Square.

Harry Gregson Williams/Norihiko Hibino: MGS3 OST is hawt hawt hawt.

Kô Ôtani: I've only listened to like 20 minutes worth of Shadow of the Colossus material, and I already love this dude.

Aw yeah.

Damn, how could I forget him. I agree. I've only heard a tiny bit of the SotC soundtrack but everything that I have heard was very powerful and fits the game very well.

Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage 1 and 2)
Hideki Naganuma (Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future)
and whoever did the music in Einhander and Devil May Cry 3

does anyone know who compose the Fire Emblem theme? that guy should be mentioned just because of that song, I love that theme.

Hip Tanaka ( a true genius)
Koji Kondo
Motoi Sakaruba
Nobou Uematsu
Yuukichan's Papa, Ogeretsu Kun, Manami Ietel (Mega Man 2 soundtrack SKULLCASTLE - NEVER FORGET)

Yeah, Mega Man 2 and 3 have some of the best soundtracks I've ever heard... Yuukichan's Papa is awesome! I love when Japanese developers use messed up nicknames in the credits!

Nobuo Uematsu (FF)
Harry Gregson Williams (Metal Gear Solid)

Koji Kondo

the one, who made the music for Sonic 1-2

I'm pretty sure the original Sonic's music was by Dreams Come True, which can't be said for the sequel. I could be wrong, though.

Who did Space Harrier?

I'll see your Rob Hubbard and raise you a Jochen Hippel.

Ah, the music in 7 Gates of Jambala was lovely! I was in Germany at the time of its release (late 1989), and so I had to buy the german rev. Never mind - it had amazing voiceovers IN GERMAN. 'Alle matarin fire' (! - gibberish) right before the first boss' appearance. It's still in my head. :lol

Hip Tanaka (Metroid)
Yoko Shimomura (Castlevania: SoTN, SMRPG, and I believe Street Fighter 2, right?)
Motoi Sakuraba (Golden Sun 1 & 2, Baten Kaitos, Tales, Valkyrie Profile, The Star Oceans)
Koji Kondo (SMRPG, all the mario and zeldas)
Nobuo Uematsu (FFIV, SMRPG, FFVIII)
Go Shiina (thanks to her ToL soundtrack. Judging from her awesome tracks on Klonoa 2, I don't think she'll be a 1-hit wonder, either. :D )

Anyone else want to see Uematsu, Kondo, and Shimomura work together on a game, again?

Wow, thank you so much for that link, teh_pwn. This Terra remix is just about as good as what was done on the "Grand Finale" soundtrack!
