FBI investigators in New York raided the office of Michael Cohen, President Trump's longtime personal lawyer on Monday, in a significant step following the amount and range of work he has handled for Trump.

The New York Times first reported that federal prosecutors issued the search warrant after a referral from Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

It does not appear as though the Cohen search was directly linked to the Russian investigation, the Times reported. There was no immediate information from the FBI or the Justice Department.

I don't think they are allowed to just use anything they find. Only things that pertain to whatever they are alleging would be sorted by a 3rd party or judge.

From my understanding, the feds will use a "taint" team to look through all the taken files and only forwarding the ones related to the warrant. However by law, the attorney-client privilege becomes null and void if they come across illegal activity so if there are any skeletons in the closet and the feds have it in their possession, it's game over for Cohen (and others).

If (when?) they find illegal activity, the taint-team will pass those up the ladder for further investigation...It's hard to believe but a porn star may just take down Trump...there is something incredible appropriate about all this.

Mueller was appointed in May of 2017 so its only been 11 months as far as this investigation is concerned. Secondly, its simply not over and in spite of the internet's impatience, it is actually proceeding very quickly and he is smartly leaving things like yesterday's news to other branches of the Justice Dept to pursue.

Thus far, Mueller has secured 4 guilty pleas (Flynn, Papadopoulos, Gates, Swaan), 32 charges against Manafort, 13 indictments against Russian nationals, and now it has sucked in the President's personal attorney. Other than that, yeah, a big bag of nothing.

Agh, that's the area I wasn't certain about. I was not sure if they were even permitted to bring up 'other' things not pertaining to the case.

I thought the alleged breach or abuse of attorney-client privilege was what enabled them to actually do the search in the first place.

I think this is a somethingburger for Cohen. Saw on TV executing 3 raids on a lawyer is pretty tough to pull off. Probably easy to secure a conviction and flip him.

Moreover, it's clear investigators are dedicating a lot of resources to make an example out of the president. It's kind of ridiculous the POTUS is under the microscope for white collar crime given the prevelance of it in the US where it's not taken seriously. In any event, it looks like whether the President does nothing or kicks off a court battle he's uncomfortably exposed in office as well as when he leaves. Must be tough to deal the demands of the oval office with this burden on your shoulders.

I personally think everyone is giving Trump too much credit. He's not smart enough to have colluded with Russia and have kept his mouth shut about it. And considering we're now 16 months into this and they're expanding into his personal affairs that is what I believe. Muller was authorized to investigate collusion and all incidental findings for that reason. So, Trump and his associates are being investigated and they found enough dirt to raid his attorney.
