someone can easily pick it up and simply walk away if the receiver is not home

this is what they did with my 1070, and the only way i knew it was there was because i was constantly checking the delivery status

depends where you live at. my building my neighbor lets the mailman and Fed-Ex guy in and he leaves stuff at the door all the time. but I'm not there in the afternoon so it works out for me.

but what would anyone have been able to do if their status was marked "delivered" and there was no package to be seen because nobody was home?

Oh man I am going to miss having a doorman when I finally move out into my own place, which will definitely not have a doorman.

It sucks, but what you can do about it is log in to fedex/ups and have it dropped off at a local shipping store/distribution center. At least that way you know it is safe and things like this won't happen again.

You should ask your boss if you can ship your packages to work, I've done it for years with 2 different jobs, either way they could care less.

Now, going to school is obviously different

If a package doesn't ask for a signature, couriers will just walk up to the door and drop it. I agree, though -- sometimes they need to use common sense.

Obviously, they shouldn't have done what they did with yours. You should call and complain.

I'm lucky in that I live out in the country and even though neighbours are kind of close, nobody would ever take a package. I've had no issues when stuff has just been dropped, although I hate it.

i got tired of ups not leaving packages at my doorstep so i went online and gave them carte blanche to leave everything

I was waiting for them to deliver a router I won from the alienware twitch stream. The delivery date was wrong and they left it outside in the rain. Fed Ex.

Thankfully it works fine.

Yeah I have had that happen to me with a couple of delivery services including Fedex. And I' live in an apartment building too. Anyone could have ran off with it if they like.

I have it even worse, my delivery lady just leaves the packages on the pavement on the street. She left there my GYO (a book) during a heavy rain and recently my copy of the collector's edition of Type-0 for which I paid some big money.

haha, I live in a semi detached house in a small cull-de-sac.

I ordered some books from Amazon. And "Amazon Logistics" posted a note through my mail box saying that they left it in the grey bin, i.e. a rubbish bin filled with rotting food in trashbags and bin juice.

The books smelt like rotting food once I unwrapped them.

The crazy thing is that there was a green bin full of freshly mowed grass, as well recycling boxes they could have left it in.

I would have preferred them to chuck it over the garden fence. OR even simply left it with a neighbour.

So all in all, getting stuff delivered is a game of lottery.

was it in the building at least? Couple years back i ordered a printer and fedex guy tosses it over the fence into my backyard. Also had a ring and run with fedex, not a fan. USPS has thrown boxes at my door from the street and also just kept packages without notifying me that they attemped to delivery (they didn't) or that I have something to pickup at the post office so of course it gets returned to sender. UPS is the only one that hasn't thrown some kind of bullshit at me in the 10 years i've lived at this address.

I use amazon locker. There are many supermarkets in NYC that have those and I have my package delivered to those in a secure manner.

That is presuming that you bought your 1070 at amazon.

Before you light your pitchfork on fire, Fedex has a smart post option that will mark it as delivered when in actuality it is delivered to the USPS who is going to complete the final stage of delivery. This could be your case.

You contact the customer support of the company you bought the item from and let them know you didn't receive it. If they don't do anything about it, then just chargeback on your credit card; but unless you're buying from a shady website.

You should never have to pay for something that you didn't receive.

Saw this all the time in college. They'd just leave packages in front of doors in large housing complexes. Thankfully, my building had a building manager on-site all day and all packages were left in the office. I felt bad for kids in other places because it appeared they didn't have such options.

I have my packages delivered at a small locally owned mailbox store for this very reason. I'm not home when packages are delivered, and it's close to my job so there's no chance of shenanigans.

When I bought my Surface Pro 3, the delivery guy shoved it into a bush in front of my house. It was very well hidden from view, so that was nice.

When you order a product it's not on the delivery person to decide whether or not your delivery location is secure. Have it delivered to your job or someone else with a secure location.

USPS has been doing this a lot lately, after my apartment management moved the lock from the inner door of the building to the outer door. What really fucking pisses me off is, multiple times now, USPS has done this without even buzzing me to see if I'm home. They just leave that shit outside. If it happens again I'm going to be bitching to the post office.

call the company and say you never received the package. they'll handle it on their end.

smartpost is such a headache. but this one seems to be straight Fed-Ex.

I never understood this when I saw it in movies and shit. LEaving a package outside the door for anyone to pick, what the fuck? You have to personally get it here, and sign for it, whatever it is.

Like ill never forget the Friends episode with the cheesecake and thinking "wait why would the delivery just leave it there at the door?"

Not fedex, but had a parcel delivery once, guy didn't knock or ring bell, dog alerted me was someone at door, when I opened the front door he had dumped it on the floor and was walking away in the process of forging my signature.

Shoulda have let him and claimed package undelivered thinking about it now.

eh. i have a screen door and they just open that up and leave it between the screen door and my front door. works pretty well.

Yeah my job is OK with me shipping things there, I dont do it often because I don't want it to become a hassle for them. I usually only do it it with expensive things. Last time I did it I had rims for my car delivered to my work because shipping to businesses is cheaper than residential. Getting them home was a hassle, fitting four boxes in a 350z was a challenge lol.

That is crazy. When will somebody start a law-suit against these practices?

nice car

I have a Digital code entry system on my block and a new Hermes driver could not figure out the code even though its written on the address label of every package delivered.

He came to the main door couldn't get in then turned around to leave and a random guy approached him and asked if the package was his and the driver handed it over without asking for details.

£200 pair of jeans just given away, luckily the driver admitted his mistake when the store questioned his company about it.

I can definitely see it being a problem for apartments and other close houses where people can just glance over and see you have a package. I don't mind the postman leaving stuff by the front door since it's up a steep driveway and then enclosed a bit so someone would have to walk all the way up to the front door to see if we have anything. Sometimes he rings the doorbell to let us know something was dropped off, sometimes not. It's probably going to suck once I move out into an apartment, unless they've got some kind of secure package drop-off location.

When you order a product it's not on the delivery person to decide whether or not your delivery location is secure. Have it delivered to your job or someone else with a secure location.

It's a delivery company, whether the product reaches you or not is pretty much the baseline measure of efficiency.

They don't do that in my apartment building (there are signs saying don't leave packages here), but instead sometimes they don't even attempt the delivery, and I have to waste my time arranging a redelivery or a pick up on the phone.

As a FedEx driver let me give you guys a couple of hints. You know how you get free two day Shipping or really cheap overnight shipping? Is because shippers like Amazon and/or Wal Mart make deals with FedEx to get really great shipping rates and they renounce to some basic services like delivering packages and getting a signature, etc. So we as drivers can go to your building and just leave the package at your front door without getting a signature and FedEx is not liable for loss, theft or damages.

But before you guys kill me.... we are also supposed to use common sense. As a driver I always try to collect a signature for all my packages and if I have to release a package, I rather go back the next day than to leave a package from Amazon or any shipper that makes it obvious what the contents are. That also applies to weather conditions and high risk areas.

I always assumed it was up to purchaser and the sellers options. depending their options you can choose on how you request to get stuff delivered.

Some stuff needs to get signed for (registered), basic mail just gets delivered. Some transport companies take direct to postal depo's.

I would consider the bolded to be the most basic service... if you don't do that, what do you do?
