I thought this had to do with sexual implications, but apparently, this guy just doesn't like the noise. How they omitted Monica Seles' grunts, I don't know.

Wimbledon referee makes a noise over grunting

LONDON (AFP) - Grunting noises made by female tennis players as they strike the ball are getting out of hand, and rules should be changed to crack down on the practice, Wimbledon referee Alan Mills has said, according to a report.

Mills, Wimbledon's chief official for 22 years who retires after this week's tournament, which begins on Monday, told The Sunday Times he believed coaches were teaching young women players to grunt.

"I don't like it at all. Today there is probably more grunting than there has ever been," he said.

"If I was playing an opponent making so much noise, I think I'd just laugh. But it's what young players are being coached to do.

"Many of the non-grunting players are unhappy about the noise pollution and a kind of counter-grunt culture has emerged in recent years whereby offended parties ape their opponent's noises."

He added: "Officials can only act if the player is shown to be making the noise on purpose, which is virtually impossible to do.

"As far as I am concerned it is certainly a specific matter that the rule makers should address."

One of the loudest of the modern grunters is defending women's champion Maria Sharapova, who, according to the paper, makes a 100-decibel grunt, roughly the same volume as small aircraft landing nearby.

Smells faintly of rancid stilton.

Who wouldn't want to hear her grunt....

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
What's not to like? At least if you ever wind up dragged to a boring women's tennis match, you could close your eyes and pretend you're elsewhere....like a naked women's tennis match, AMIRITE?!

I heard on the radio last summer a clip by the local station "Gay sex or great tennis" and it was just orgasm moans and tennis grunts and callers had to identify which sound it was. :lol

wtf... it's kinda hard not to grunt. Especially when you're into the match and running around everywhere.
Tennis is about concentration... if you're distracted by your opponent grunting, then poops to you, you shouldn't be playing tennis seriously in the first place.

I always loved walking by the tennis courts at school when the girls were practicing cos I could imagine how loud they must be in bed.

Then why don't the men do it? Also, have you heard how much some women overdo it? It is pretty bad.

Sharapova's grunting was so loud at one point in her career that they actually stopped a match to tell her to stop grunting so loud. It was a long rally and she started off really low with the grunting but by the end she was so loud that the crowd was laughing everytime she'd do it.

If it's impossible not to grunt (or at least to not grunt loudly), then why did female tennis players not do so as much 20 years ago? More to the point (and as someone above noted), why do men not do it? Don't they also want whatever extra "oomph" it is that grunt proponents assume it gives the female players? :p

So I guess it should be Stop Screaming instead of Stop Grunting.

It's a natural thing and the men do grunt. Perhaps not as loudly as the women, but they grunt nonetheless. Screaming(is what I'd label it as...) on the other hand is pretty distracting.

If it's impossible not to grunt (or at least to not grunt loudly)
Yeah, I was thinking more of the normal 'grunting' I suppose. Sharipova the Screamer.
