FF games on DS

what's the scoop? why S-E are supporting Nintendo's handhelds instead of their beloved company's one?

GBA has:

-FF I&II
-FF V
-FF VI

DS:

-FFIII

is that the full list? as an Nbot I know I'm very happy about that, but ...why DS/GBA and not PSP?

Because they want as much profit as they can get. That's why. Their mayor fanbase for their IPs is in Japan where the DS has the upper hand. Combine this with cheaper development cost and you have the answer.

Add FFIV to GBA and add FF:CC to the DS list.
Why Nintendo handhelds? Simple. They're the market leaders.

Well to be fair... FF at least before VII seems to be more suited to the DS.
Other than FMV (which is only a storage/compression issue), I see absolutely no reason why FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX could not appear on the DS. In fact, I believe that we will see them on the DS.

I, II, IV, V, VI - GBA

III, VII, VIII, IX - DS

Hey, I'm allowed to dream right?

Well VII onwards feel ... very playstationy. I know its just a feeling ( rather than technical reasons) but I just don't see SE putting them on a nintendo system.

Why "dream" about inferior versions of the PSOne FFs when PSP ports could be so much better?

You hit the nail on the head, the PSP would likely only get ports.

The DS, would likely see new content (eg: FF III, Xenosaga DS)

So you think that a DS port of, say, FFVII would be massively retooled, yet a PSP port wouldn't receive ANY improvements or additions?

Listen, I own a DS and a PSP. I'm not denying that FFIV-VI ports are better suited for the DS, due to the lack of loading times. However, I would absolutely NOT accept watered-down DS ports of FFVII-IX... and no sane person should. Jesus, you even mention Xenosaga DS as a "good" example of new content. Would the PSOne FFs be better if you stripped them down to that level? The likely answer is NO.

Well then, they wouldn't be ports. They'd be remakes.

With that in mind, it would be interesting to see FF VII retooled for 2D sprites and tiles for shits and giggles.

Akitoshi Kawazu digs Nintendo (see his attempt to get Square to return to making Nintendo games in the previous generation), therefore FFIII->DS. Since the GBA hardware is perfect for SNES ports, therefore it was logical to just port the SNES FF games to GBA as well.

That's why PSP doesn't get them.

And that's why we can expect FF7-FF9 ports on PSP instead of GBA.

Why would they have to be watered-down? Compression's come a long way in a generation and the DS can use 512MB cards IIRC. Most of the content on the FF discs on PS1 was just repeat data for things like the world map, towns, battle animations, etc.
I mean, not that I actually care about FFVII or FFVIII (I did like FFIX), but I don't see any reason they can't be ported to the DS completely intact.

I think FFVII-IX would look quite nice on the DS, looking at how well FFIII is coming along.

The second screen could be used to view all your characters, rather than just seeing Cloud on screen, for instance.

Square-Enix simply will support which ever platform takes Japan. It looks like they hedged their bets on the right horse in this case.

Okay, so if SE supports the handheld market leader, why did they support the WonderSwan? Part ownership?

(this is not a trolling question)

They were forced into that, because at the time there was a bitter rift between Square and Nintendo which developed after Square made some disparaging comments about the N64 and then Yamauchi took some shots at Square/RPG players.

Square got a new president after the FF movie flopped, and he made it a point to re-open ties with Nintendo a few years ago.

Because they didn't have a GBA license. And as soon as they realized all the fat sacks of cash money they were missing out on, they decided to make kissyface with Nintendo and get one.
