I personally find this as one of the better sports movies ever. It was on Spiketv tonight and I felt even stronger about what a good movie it is. The movie has been a longtime favorite of my father and it never really hit me why till now. My father has always been a baseball enthusiast, but now I realize this movie is much more involving for him than I thought.
You see, my Dad's Dad died at a young age in his early 40's of a heart attack. My father being the oldest of 4 siblings knew him best, but his father died so young. My father was in high school when his father died.
My grandfather, played a little baseball, and while his brother was more successful, my grandfather , the politician, played a lot recreationally before he died. And while watching field of dreams, it really hit me why my father loved the movie so much. The idea of meeting his father at a young age like Costners character was able to is something my father has longed for over the years. To be able to meet a great man, a great father in his youth is something that would be a lifechanging experience. I have since noticied that the photos my father has kept around of his father is either of the whole family or his father playing baseball. Which really hits a sentimental note when Costner plays catch with his Dad in the movie.
Why am I making this thread? It might be because watching this movie made this realization all that more emotional. I just hope if anyone out there has a good relationship with their father, that they will treasure it as I will. I look forward to the days I spend with mine, from attending Niners games, to hanging out.
I guess im trying to say is both your parents won't be around forever, don't wait till their dead to appreciate them if they have been good to you.
