Welp, that's just terrible. And here I thought Yahoo ESports was one of the few actually good ones to cover the FGC where so many others have sucked at covering.

Mike is a very talented and extremely nice guy. One of the best dudes to cover the FGC. He'll end up somewhere.

It doesn't work on beams, you can try it in the demos against those jobber bots.

I THINK it negates out some of the beam damage because it's like a partial reflect.
Combofiend just said in stream magnum can't be reflected, so it sounds like Capcom will pick specific moves that can be reflected (and what not).

Wait...really Capcom? STILL!?!
Arthur still gets hit with a knockdown when his armor runs out and you can't even tag out during this in MVCI to try to remotely deal with it this time around either. Without lvl 3 xfactor theres not much point here. He's still fucked! But hey tag mixups and a dash...at least when Gold Frieza status runs out a minion will shoot at fuckers to cover you if you hit a button in DBFZ.
*mumble grumble*

Using the Time gem to get solo Arthur mix-up is solid, but the knockdown off of armor is hilarious. Has anyone tried refreshing it?

Son Frieza is a scumbag who plays dirty... Arthur is a honorable knight and a masochist.

That's not a legit thing in this game at all... the recovery on the time gem teleport is really high. That was the first thing I tried in this game too.

Of course right now people are going to get confused/mixed up by that but if my old ass, no reflexes/execution/skill can react to that then pro players are going to punish that all day. You really use it for hang time, some mobility and getting out of corner situations when the opponent doesn't suspect it and in that stuff it does it work fine.

Also the teleport dash counts towards your air actions so you can't do stuff like multiple dashes and then three time gem dashes as well.

Bought a switch looking forward to MH, get told it's not coming to USA. At least we might get a PS4 version finally.

Just buy it off the JP eshop. Timr to level up that vocabulary.

Capcom clarified "no plans at this time". So who knows. Its so Capcom to ignore the entry people want on the Switch because they are worried it will take away from their western focused PS4/Xbox game.

It needs to be said that meter is not easy to get in Mvci. Doing specials, blocking moves, and wiffing moves does not build you meter. You ONLY get meter if you hit someone or get hit. Really really weird decision. I don't think there has ever been a fighter where you only build meter with hits.

Such a huge drop in attendance. And it isn't restricted to one or two games, all had lower turnouts. Have any idea on the pot bonus last year?

Akuma (and I assume Eliza) in Tekken 7 only get meter with hits as well. Or maybe they also get with blocks, but I haven't noticed.

My Japanese is D-tier. Like child mixed with Borat accent tier.

Ma man DahBomb always with the FGC news on deck. But yeah looks like FGs in general are dropping in numbers. I guess going to tournaments have lost its "wow" factor and it's now normalizing.

At this rate I think a shrinkage in EVO numbers is all but certain.

Though last year Smash 4 and SFV were hot and they drew the biggest numbers. Then CEO had that Dreamland which resulted in further Smash entrant numbers to decrease.

Decline in entrants for CEO is in part due to it outgrowing its venue. Was far too packed last year. The smaller numbers aren't great to see, but at least this year should be more comfortable for those that did attend.

So do people think invitationals will be future then? With fewer open tournaments?
How future are we talking about here?

The end game is basically there are tournaments open to public that pros don't actually play in because they have already qualified for the bigger tournaments (they have better seeds). These smaller tournaments have the lesser players advance to bigger qualifiers and so on. And then it all culminates in grand slam type tournaments.

Like in the far, far future if fighting games are mega huge E sports, you are not going to have situations where Daigo is playing some random nobody who just started playing the game first time ever at a tournament. That's not how it works in professional sports either. That random nobody first has to win in open qualifiers before entering into the professional circuit. In fact, that's how it is in the big MOBA games too... me and 4 other buddies can't just make a DOTA 2 and start playing in the International qualifiers. We have to start from the ground up.

The end game is that these open tournaments where everyone is on the same playing field would eventually be extinct. Of course there is a big appeal to rubbing shoulders with your favorite pro players but if this gets bigger then open tournaments get pushed to the side for bigger tournament with more rigorous qualifiers to weed out the scrubs from the pros so that in the big tournaments it's just pros vs pros.

Though in this reality, the average fighting game set is also much longer. Like sets that span at least 30-40 minutes to an hour so that they can be broadcast as main events sort of like Tennis matches. The 2/3 and 3/5 only work in open tournament style tournaments because you have to play a large number of matches but when you have a fewer number of pro players you can easily have longer sets.

Of course this reality is very far from now, open tournaments are still here to stay for a very long time.

Nope. Akuma gains meter on block or when he blocks.

Are you basing this hypothesis on one data point? Like.. what about Combo Breaker, wasn't really down in entries, right?

Yeah I think spacing of tournaments is a big factor. Like Combo Breaker was just a few weeks ago (and did well in numbers) and E3 is right now with CEO this weekend, and EVO is just a few weeks away now.

Its tough for non-professional players to travel to that many events.

Okay. When I whiffed attacks I didn't get meter but I was probably too focused on what was going in during blocking to see if I gained meter.

I think EVO also suffered from drops in some games? Or at least no significant increase.

I can't help but think it's going to be hard to increase numbers to afford the new venue that is a hour away and is probably more expensive.

I would refer to ceo regressing to the mean which is fine since the current venue is excellent nobody wants to drive to goddamn Daytona...

The venue for next year's CEO is supposed to be nice, but there's no way I'd be able to afford to spend 2-3 nights there.

Not to mention the time spent on goddamned I-4.

Probably a good thing that this will be a down year so that next year's CEO will explode at the new venue.

I don't see how.

Numbers are down everywhere this year. I expect 2018 to see a similar decrease in attendance, unless MVCI and DBZF turn out to be ridiculously popular.

This first Dragonball volume is, uh, weird.

tbh you don't need to be able to read Japanese to play it. Kiranico will have full walthroughs and such.

Keep in mind that Toriyama made it up as he went along. The manga was mainly about Goku and Bulma's adventures to find the Dragon balls, and it was inspired by Journey to the West. Following the end of the first arc
it goes into a Tourney arc which is pretty good itself, before going back to Goku going on an adventure to collect the Dragon balls again

For the smash games, there was another Smash only CEO event few weeks ago that split the attendees. For FGC Combo Breaker(rightfully so) have took CEO's place as the best none EVO tournament.
