Fighting Games Weekly | August 20-26

I ignore it most of the time, it just caught my eye because I haven't been paying attention to Persona or streams lately and was curious if the numbers were dropping, not that I believed it's actually dead.

On Levelup one of the commentators asked if he should have the Complexity tag in front of his name and someone in the background said no.

Damn if I was a sponsor I would definitely pick up players like Mike and Combo, the hell is going on over there on the west coast?

I think it may be a good thing if these eSports sponsors that force their players to attend shady tournaments would gradually leave the FGC, or at least, make an effort to learn more about how FGC tournaments work. to quote Fchamp "if my sponsor tells me to go, then I have to go". It seems that from how Ultradavid described John Nelson as being some dude who has no real connection to the FGC, that sounds a bit like the people who run these eSports teams methinks.

My argument boils down to something simple, really. Discs can add to the strength of a series, but they don't add value to the product you bought because your old disc is useless. Repeating this update pattern in short bursts is harmful. Paid updates(NOT patches) like AE give you the option of adding value which people are totally ecstatic about(despite some paranoia about DLC here and there). Free patches are the ultimate form of support and they can always be accompanied by extra DLC to offset costs for console patching fees. Is there anything you would disagree with in this paragraph? I think we can all agree that more of the second or third would be preferred over constant 9 month refreshes that piss people off more and more.

Don't mean to rehash an old argument but this is exactly where I stand in this matter.

Fighting games (especially the really big ones like SF, Tekken...etc) need to be more like a platform and not just a disc "one and done" release. If you continue the path of releasing a new forcible "refresh" disc every 6-9 months, not only its a very stupid and costly business plan for the publisher itself, but you also slash more than half the online population every single time which makes the games even less appealing to get into.

Don't forget SmokeMaxx's ARK V is also this weekend. It's too bad his tournament is on the same day as Summer Jam. But I'm sure Smoke and his staff are going to put together a great tournament.

Thanks for the shoutout Rice-Eater :)
EG Ricky Ortiz and UVG Noel Brown are confirmed. We have another guest who might be coming. BT Di3mini0n and Col.CC (??) Filipino Champ were interested but I don't think are going to be able to make it.

I'm very excited and I think our tournament will run ahead of schedule (Tournament Standard Time -3 hours lol) but I'm just worried because for some reason this time of year absolutely everybody in the South is just flat out broke. Between school starting up, competing with Summer Jam, and being at the end of summer, we're worried that attendance probably won't be as high as last year's tournament...

I hope everyone has a great time with the stream. We wanted to feature the absolute best players in the South but all have various scheduling (or financial) conflicts. It really sucks because I don't believe these players coming in would win easily if these other players could make it up. Oh well, I've offered to help these other players out just so we can see the South represent, but they can't make it. Look out for my boy ARK XI though. He reset Grand Finals of AE against Justin Wong last year and I fully expect him to take out some of these killers this year.

I think you're being pretty charitable to the players in question. I know Justin Wong has flexibility in what tournaments he chooses to or not to attend, and even if none of these other players did, nobody is forcing them to do anything. Especially when it comes to actively promoting said events.

What are you talking about?

The Southern FGC is always broke, there's no time of year when they're not broke.
It's a big thing holding the area back- folks don't get to travel like they do in other areas because it's a cost to travel cause things are spread out, and folks just don't have the money.

Sponsorship would do huge here. Wish there were sponsors for the South, but you can get sponsors without winning, so it's a vicious cycle.

IMO the market here is so spread out that local companies don't want to sponsor because they have no reason to advertise to someone who lives 5+ hours away. Bigger name sponsors don't want to sponsor tournies because bigger name players (from the region) aren't guaranteed and it's very difficult for coast players to get affordable flights to an area of the South (unless they buy well in advance). Sponsors don't want to sponsor players from the South because it's unlikely that they'll see them in a lot of tournaments and get the company that exposure. All this is multiplied by the fact that you can just sponsor a player that will appear at WNF every week (watched by thousands of viewers) and that you have tournaments on the coasts that offer $50k whereas over 2k in the South is a lot (excluding Final Round and CEO is considered East Coast to me).

Oh well, we'll do what we can. I'll keep pursuing this dream I have. As soon as I get out of med school, I'd like to sponsor a tournament with the big bucks I'm gonna make. And sixfortyfive- you are definitely respected here. I've already told the locals to watch out haha. Don't disappoint ;)

I can't tell you how frustrating it's been for me in Troy, Alabama. I work weeknights; everyone else works weekends. The one or two guys who have free time won't ride with me to events in other cities because they're afraid of a tournament setting or just aren't interested. One of them says he'll go to Final Round; backs out the day of the tournament due to "family emergencies" but is curiously spotted playing Yugioh the same day one hour away from home. I'll post all the relevant information about majors/regionals within driving distance on our Facebook group weeks if not months in advance; people will somehow still manage to forget to sign up. I'm always willing to drive. I'm always willing to make the arrangements. I'm always willing to put in more than my part of the cost if need be. Yet despite living in a college town, it's been months since I've even played against anyone here at all. Not throwing in the towel yet because it looks like I might actually have a carpool willing to head up to Birmingham next weekend, which I'm looking forward to.

Also frustrating is that there are players in 3 different cities about 1 hour away in different directions that do have decent scenes, but they're always doing something on weeknights and never on weekends. So I have to drive 2.5 to 3.5 hours to find any competition, which I do, on an almost weekly basis. Even if it's just casuals, sometimes I still make it out there to network. I'm putting together a stream to be used at state events in the near future, and I'm going to do my small part to advertise local scenes through it in one fashion or another. Figuring out how to make it visible is going to be the hard part.

Sometimes I listen to WNF commentators talk about how some players that go there live "out in the middle of nowhere" and have to travel so far to get there, only to look it up on Google Maps and see that it's only a 2-hour drive. Fucking spoiled coastal scenes. ò_ó

And now I just remembered ATL Finalroundbats crashing and burning before it even got off the ground. Larry offers the southeast a chance at a trip to Japan and nobody shows up. fml

The problem is that the South is poor, period - it's not just the FGC. It's been a systematic problem since the country was founded, unfortunately, and it limits the opportunities of a lot of people living there because the problems are so systematic.

Have you tried advertising local meetups around gameshops/colleges/etc.? A lot of times people just aren't aware that other people in their region are doing stuff like this. And you have to keep trying. You could literally cover the sun with an advertisement of your meetups for an entire week and people STILL wouldn't know that meetups were going on in their town.

Maybe try having a local group that's branched off from the Alabama group? Easier for the newer players to get their voices heard. I'm a huge fan of SRK and Facebook, but I'm starting to think that the larger threads/groups scare off potential newer players in specific areas. We have one Arkansas thread and one Arkansas Facebook group but they're both dominated by central Arkansas. If anyone else posts anything about meetups in eastern Arkansas (for example), they're likely to get drowned out by the subsequent flood of posts from us.

One of my personal roadblocks for local networking is that I don't have and have never had anything to do with the university here; I moved here for work. I've tried to accomplish some of the above suggestions through students I've met in the past without much results. Probably going to try again in the near future since it's that time of year.

Haha well you can hold a random event and post it around campuses/game shops/etc and find people there. One of the rules of thumb when it comes to campuses is- as long as you look like you know what you're doing, noone will question you. Granted, I usually post fliers around colleges I've attended or am familiar with, but I've come back to them often years after undergrad and noone ever wonders why I'm putting up fliers for our tournaments.

Does your local university have a gaming/anime group? From what I've seen those two are usually paired together or have a lot of overlap in members. You can shoot the President (or whatever) of that an email.

Sorry for derailing this thread into community building lol. It's one of the many things in the FGC I'm passionate about.

So I just tuned in to watch some SF4 on WNF, the chat keeps going on about how P4A is dying or dead. What's up with that? Have the numbers been dwindling or something?

I heard the stream numbers were also pretty low when P4 was on stream and then jumped significantly when SF4 came on. So not just the players, but the game isn't getting a high viewer count, at least at WNF? Not sure what to make of that.

I ignore it most of the time, it just caught my eye because I haven't been paying attention to Persona or streams lately and was curious if the numbers were dropping, not that I believed it's actually dead.

Insinuation, the great art.

The stream numbers were good for Persona on Big 2 (it was close to 6k). The entrants at Big 2 were low though but people think it was because people were saving a little money for Summer Jam this weekend.

P4A not getting the same numbers as Marvel = DEAD

BRB, going to sell both of my copies back to Gamestop HUAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUA

There's money to be made on the long-tail activities of the community, but Capcom isn't pursuing those opportunities in any meaningful way. A big part of that is probably the lack of vision from Capcom's suits, but it's not like any of the other major fighting game developers are doing it, either. I have no doubt that treating Street Fighter as a platform instead of just like all of the other disc-based games would be great for the hardcore fans. I have no idea if that would be a more profitable model for Capcom, though.

Dude, I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at, but I think I have an idea. I bought P4, I decided not to try to really learn the game but I enjoy messing around with it and watching it. I also like talking about numbers because I'm a stat guy(I guess it comes from the sports fan side of me), I've stated this before as I'm always interested in event turn outs and stream numbers. Besides that I only talk about games I actually care about, I care about P4 and SF4. You don't see me talking about other fighters, not even just to be part of the conversation unless it concerns numbers or how it relates to the FGC and not just stuff about the game itself. Hopefully that clarifies some misunderstanding you may have had.

Does anyone not do that? It's the first thing I do. That or pop out and close that window.

I don't. I love the stream chat during hype moments. In fact, I try to hunt down youtube videos of events with chat enabled. Stuff like Floe's streams, Marlin combos, etc

I turn to forums for live reactions. Not like you can read the chat live. It scrolls by a million miles an hour and a lot of it is spam. And I get to avoid all the bigotry and asshattery and whatnot. Win!

Shouts out to Dirty South FGC GAF.
If my work schedule ever changes, I'll finally get a chance to go to Battle n' Brew or some of the ATL get togethers.
Sort of annoying to miss everything, even if I am scrub-level.

At this point, the only chat I leave open is for a dedicated VF stream. Low traffic, very helpful commenters and the host will usually answer your questions. If Shidosha isn't hosting the stream, he's usually in the chat being helpful.

Speaking of the South, is there a Rock'em Sock'em(Charlotte, NC) this weekend? I'd go, but I"m going to Georgia because not one, but two of my sisters gave birth this week and both live in Northern Georgia(Winder and Dacula). It probably wouldn't be a good idea to have one with SJ and ARK on the same weekend. I have no idea if one has already been done and this coming Saturday is the last one of the month.

I generally only leave chat open for smaller streams, like FinestKO's or solo streamers. Big streams like LevelUp or Spooky get way too many obnoxious people.

There is. Some of the bigger name folks hitting MLG though- even if it's just cause they think Skullgirls is $2,000 free money.

And yeah, the smaller the comm, (like VF/AH) the better the stream monsters.

does anyone remember the name of that vega player that was making waves in the new york stream a cpl months ago? need to look for some inspiration
