Would guess Capcom has a flat licensing fee.

If I was guessing, I'd guess the opposite. Why take a flat fee when you can guarantee a continuous revenue stream? Especially with Ultra coming out?

One would assume that the Virgin site will allow Ultra matches when it's released.

I think this is a great thing all around. Some people would like to have a FT5 set with some pro-player for $10 bucks, or maybe set-up some matches against a pro to get some tips

Wait, so as long as you and your opponent agree to a longer set it doesn't have to be ft1, it could be 3 or 5 instead?

I think I misread. You're saying of the games that still get the majority of the airtime at majors, those are the ones you look at.

I think I read it as "these are the only games that are getting play at majors". Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah, sorry. All I meant was that for now I think Marvel is a silly game that's getting worse instead of getting better and I haven't bothered to watch it on purpose in quite some time.

Unoptimized or Unique Marvel is best Marvel. Watching GCYoshi use nades and mines to make Chris' unsafe moves safe or Punisher using RR super mines to help IronFist is what makes the game fun. MiniBoss and Paradigm also bring in the crazy with their tech or style of play. I actually get excited when I see Wesker on stream now.

point wesker is awesome

Maybe one day your dream can have sex with my dream of this being all attached to an online website where TOs can upload results that automatically update players' respective profiles and serve as permanent records of performance.. and birth the digital future of the FGC!

It would be cool if Big E could, after the tournament, just upload some standardized bracket file to the website, the website would automatically see GAF|Enzo in the bracket, and create a permanent link on my profile. And from that profile could be a feed of my best performances, a history of my best performances, aggregate data, my worst player/character/team matchup, my best player/character/team matchup etc.

Funny thing is that this was actually kind of being done four years ago before Tonamento imploded. Although Tonamento was flawed, and the update made it worse, it's kind of weird to me that nobody ever stepped up to advance it after that. I would do it myself, and I have a LOT of ideas and notes on the subject, but I lack both the technical know-how to do it solo and the resources to hire someone to do it for me. :(

you know thinking about it who in their right minds would money match some random guy online? you are gonna be money matching people you know and at that point why not use paypal and send it as a gift so there's no fee?

Yea, I don't get it personally. Online is not good enough as well. Good for people who want it I guess.

Get bodied by (feel free to choose more than one):

[*]Hotel internet being total ass tier
[*]Being able to beat the flexibility of paper

Speaking of my ideas, both of these are easily rectified.

Hotel internet being ass tier is not really a problem at all with proper implementation. Easy solution: keep a master bracket offline and periodically upload a copy of it online for public consumption. Attach the machine that is running the master bracket to a non-internet local area network. Bracket runners can update the brackets from their stations via PC or tablet or whatever, and the changes will be appended to the master bracket. Worries about not being able to access the bracket if the internet goes out go away. It also enables features like live off-stream match tracking, so you could have a live scoreboard or ticker that lets you know what's going on in matches you can't see. Great feature for both viewers and attendees/players.

Surprisingly, there are a fair amount of online players who are not in their right mind.

i agree with all this. i liked the game for a while because it looked like it was going in an interesting direction and certainly the characters, speed, majority of mechanics, and freedom of options are all really appealing imo. but i feel like it's been tilting away from a neutral game and toward 3-4 little mixups making too much of the difference in a round, while the seemingly only shell that's all about excellent neutral game gets crapped on as boring. its viable character and team options have been getting more fixed, not less. it's gotten more execution heavy too, which is natural, but most of its viable teams have basically priced me out of the hands market. and it's not even as fun to commentate as it used to be! holy crap, if i had to commentate a nemo match or something? what would i even say? would there be anything interesting or exciting to say? i don't really think so.

overall, i guess i feel like its smartness is like an i robot situation. sure, it's smarter, but the way that it's smarter is that it seeks to restrict your opponents' options instead of increasing your own and tries to boil the round down to little mixups rather than promote a neutral game. i like big consequences and big damage, but i mean, just cause i like boobs doesn't mean i like double Es.

i dunno, i loved marvel 3 at the start, then hated it for a year, then loved it for most of a year, and now i hate it again. maybe i'll come back to it someday. but luckily there are other games out there i can spend time with instead.

;_;

Although I'd disagree, the game is starting to reach the point where people are learning the nuances of their characters and starting to come up with some crazy combos. I still dream of a patch, and it will always be just a dream....

Probably the silliest fighting game in the evo lineup. I can't believe Mr Wizard said a game as silly as Marvel is the best fighting game in a decade.

silly.

Ouch, Millia's H Disc disappears on block now.
RIP her being S tier for like 5 games in a row lol.

Millia and I-no look fine, Millia maybe a bit slower ( her airdash is definitely shorter).

The hitstun makes everything in this game look slow.

Hitstun should be the same as in previous GGs. BB also had identical hitstun to GG from CT to CSEX .
I don't know if it's just me but the better graphics/animations/wider screen make things look/feel slower?

;_;

disagreeing is great, i'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. i've made the mistake of doing that in the past, but i shouldn't have. to each his/her own! i definitely think the game has positive points, and i totally understand people prizing those points over its downsides. this is just how i've been feeling about it lately.

The Marvel situation has made me appreciate MTG's constant rotation in Standard (and patching on PC games) a lot more. You don't know what you have until you don't.

There are two main neutral/zoning shells... Morrigan/Doom and Mag/Dorm/Doom. The latter is more exciting than the former because more characters can combat it and it doesn't involve using one move over and over again so its more interesting by default.

But both involve using Missiles so it makes things less interesting anyway. Zero + Missiles is also neutral heavy but comes with the caveat of also having good rushdown, pressure and incoming mix ups.

Execution has definitely gotten out of control in the game at the highest level. You can't compete if you aren't good at plink dashing and have fully optimized combos that you must hit all the time.

On Virgin you can't bet money you don't have! Giving an IRL example

This would not have happened

marvel is only fun to watch these days for me when there's a haggar or some unusual team bodying people. top 8's are predictable and its only ever fun when justin wong or yipes upset champ, chris g or flocker.

I can see it from your angle though. The game becomes disheartening when all the hard work you put in to read/punish your opponent is destroyed by a helm breaker/footdive. The frustrations really outweigh the rewards in the game, which is why a lot of people dropped it. The one's who still play it (like myself, possibly Dahbomb too and others on gaf) are honestly anomalies in my eyes, probably due to how flashy the game is.

I think its getting worse too, hence UMvCX.

It tugged my heart strings...

ah yeah i guess mags is in there too. i really like the zoning aspect of zero's game, but if you wanna play him well, the zoning part of his game is only something you do before getting a hit, going into kill, then going into crazy mixup, etc. no point playing him if i'm gonna give up the second half or two-thirds of his gameplan.

I don't play the game anymore actually, it has gotten way beyond my execution threshold. I can't plink dash on a controller and all my characters demand it (except IM who has his own execution stuff). I can't do TAC infinites either (maybe a couple of reps but not for long durations as required) and in all honestly I hate doing them as much as I hate watching them. I still very much like the game though.

I love the game, but I definitely am not watching it nearly as often as I used to. Thats why I wanted to try something different. MvC3 used to feel like a playground, and I want to try to get that feeling out of it one more time.

Woah, GAF Marvel crew all putting up the banners and hats now?
