Isnt that basically what Playstation has?
I think only SF and MK IP can make F2P fighters huge. KI, Tekken and DoA and kinda Soul Calibur tried and did a'ight.
KI will be on PC maybe. We'll see if that platform works better than console for F2P fighters.
I don't know if it's true now, but at one point Tekken Revolution was the most played FG on PSN, and the SC F2P game seems to have done well enough to keep getting updates and to effectively have greenlit SC6 (especially since Harada had confirmed that Tekken 7 will not be at E3). I get the impression that KI has done very well for itself given it's inherit limitations, and Microsoft seems happy since they greenlit season 2 and are about 99% certain to greenlight S3. DoA is missing the good netcode part -- the game online is trash. Even then, they claim to have gotten about 3m downloads and about 1m users purchasing at least one DLC item (which seems like an insane attach rate -- I'm wondering if they're counting people who bought DLC characters, as well). I hope Tecmo ends up rolling out the F2P version of DoA5:LR on PC once they add the netcode, but I don't know how much that is going to matter if the netcode is going to be as bad as the console games (or worse?!).
So I think the experiments have shown that it's very viable, but no one has really brought
all of the required parts together. I actually think SF5 could be the game to do is, if Capcom can pull its head out of its ass long enough. I'm almost certain that they're doing a F2P release of SF5 at some point -- there's no way they're selling a full retail game to South America or Asia. I'll probably end up like KI, where there's a retail release that includes all of the characters up to a certain point (for each season, in KIs case) and a digital download that's Free To Play Ryu or something.
Part of me (probably the evil side) wants to see someone like Riot or Valve (but not Blizzard -- their approach to balancing would be awful for FGs) put out a F2P fighting game and just blow Capcom out of the water for good. I don't ever see that happening though (although it feels like Riot has a lot of FGC people on staff...).
