Fighting Games Weekly | Nov 17-23 | Settle it in Smash

There's no one really like Akihiko in this game. At best, I suppose there's Slayer. Dandy Step might have some similarities, but the moves don't really function the same way. And I guess you'll have a character that has difficulties getting in again lol.

But since Slayer has an unconventional dash and is more footsie/link based, he might be a hit or miss for you.

If you're looking for a character that gets to press buttons and stays in easily once you're in, there are other options.

I'm coming from the same place. I loved Akihiko in P4A and I am leaning towards Slayer because he looks cool and seems like he's a boxer, kind of?

Are the links super difficult? That has always been my problem with Dudley in SF4.

Maybe go with that. I read the word "link based" and since it's unlikely you're talking about Hyrule, I start to go into convulsions.

Haha, to be fair, it's not as bad as it was in AC where basically everything he had was a link.

Reload and Xrd, he's much easier. I'd say the only link you might learn is 5SS 5S if you want to sneak in a little extra damage or 5K 5K.
Even then, it's not necessary or that much of a problem.

Slayer fiends on counter hits though. If you like a character with plus on block normals, invul dashes, and Dudley-like short swing blows, you might like him.

Edit: Basic combos with him in Xrd are (and none of these are links)

5K > 236P/K
5SS > 2D
5SS > 236P/K

Any links are more like lenient air combos, or just doing them for the sake of doing them.

but.. deejay has maracas

How big is the Auto cancel change to Ike's Fair?

I don't eem understand most of this smash termonology
Think of it this way: when you do a jump attack in SFIV, you can act as soon as you land. Any recovery that an aerial has is removed the moment you hit the floor. In Smash, aerials that haven't fully recovered when they hit the ground are handled on a case-by-case basis. Some of them can be canceled into other attacks early. Some of them have to resolve their entire recovery time while on the ground. Autocancel means that the vast majority (maybe all - I haven't seen a video) of the attack's recovery disappears when Ike lands.

In 1.0.3, only Ike's nair autocanceled, but it isn't easy to use in the neutral. If you look on the Smashboards' Ike forum video thread, I posted a video of me playing Ike using nair properly; I would post it, but Smashboards is blocked at work. Letting his fair cancel gives him another neutral tool, and fair can also KO pretty well, whereas nair is useless for KOing.

Overall, I think it's a pretty big change for him.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I just don't like playing humans in general in fighting games. I can tolerate them casually, or for a learning experience, but I really need something more inhuman to relate to.

don't get Karsticles started on black people
Dormammu is has the deliciously deep voice of a black man. ;-)

I wonder why JC relates to Donkey Kong

Relating to DK > Relating to DJ

...so I directly relate to an androgynous blue haired prince and a early teen angel/divine intern?

This is without going down the list of other characters I've mained including a blueberry jiangshi and a tomboy karate-ka.

Shoutouts to insomnia.

Looks like Red Bull had some qualifier for a video game thing in Japan recently, which includes a fighting game tournament:

I wonder if they plan on streaming the finals in december.
Japan has an Insomnia too? It's a pretty big tournament here in the UK. I think we're on I48 at the moment.

Nintendo doing these patches on some Injustice type chit

Those Shulk/Marth/Dr Mario/Ike buffs tho

RIP Greninja
Wait what? Where?
Interesting. How often do they do proper balance changes?

It's what I love about Double Helix and KI. They don't do nerds or buffs but instead mechanical changes. When the game first came out you could a big combo with Sabrewulf and finish with an unscaled Shadow Eclipse. Instead Double Helix kept it in. DH added the Shadow Eclipse as a part of the combo so it scaled correctly. Sadira was he same. She had silly unbreakable loops with free webtrap breakers. Instead or needing Sadira, they changed the web trap properties*. Season 2 does the exact same.

*In KI, while in a combo you can go for a counter breaker at any point during combo. However if you do one the opponent doesn't try to combo breaker, you're open for severe punishment. Sadira got around this by using her instinct (imagine being able to call Trishs assist as often as you want to stay safe). She could do a counter breaker > call web > still combo. Whether you combo broke or it didn't matter because the web held you in place. Sadira didn't get nerfed. She got put in line with the other characters. It's how nerfs and buffs should be done. Otherwise you pull a Capcom and do a Sean/Trone causing insane amounts of salt.

The right way to handle fighting game patches. Hats off to DH/IG

I think playing guilty gear is opening me up to not be so dismissive of anime in general. I used to love it when I was younger and then I became a part of the anime backlash of the last half-decade or so. When it's not overly indulgent in certain criteria it's hard to deny the creativity on display in terms of the art..

And yet that game is infinite "my turn" and has the wildest setplay. I can't imagine playing a FB game without cross up protection
The funny thing is, for most characters in the game, this isn't completely true. They can't truly lock you down and you try a bunch of stuff to get out... It's just that most of it will get you killed. However, good character knowledge and the right read can get you out of most setups. That and if you try to block they can go on for days. My bigger problem is that the top-tier characters do turn the game into Melty Blood: Currently Holding That Shit, like they're an unholy marriage of a UMvC3 and Blazblue character. Maybe it's just me being biased toward wanting a game where the characters I play are top tier instead of the characters that actually are. :V

I do agree with your core point: FB games without any cross-up protection would end up with some absurdly gross setups.

lol @ beef's thread over in OT. is next level planning on streaming smash 4? did they maybe get an urly copy?

I can't help but feel that the medium took a nosedive after Haruhi and Lucky Star. There's a lot of good (esp. older) stuff to watch though.

Q, what pad layout do you use for GG?

I know it's apples & oranges but is there anyone in the game who plays remotely close to Akihiko (my only real ArcSys character experience)?

Punch = Square, Kick = X, Slash = Triangle, Hard Slash = Circle, Dust = R1, PKS = L2

Eh there isn't anyone really you could give Slayer or Millia a shot I guess

what did beef do

just bc of this thread i will play DK on saturday
and then drop him like a bad banana after a few rounds

If you want a recent show that's pretty good, Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis has been pretty great so far. Has that old-school dark fantasy adventure feel you'd not expect to see this decade.
