Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

I'll answer that questionnaire when I wake up tomorrow, but for now let me just say this was the greatest video game trailer I've watched in ages. Chills. My favorite game, beautiful again.

Broad answers: I've always been fine with action-ifying the combat, and the story can shift around as needed so long as major beats are hit with aplomb.

Can't wait to see the whole cast.

Sephiroth.

Just imagine fucking Sephiroth.......

How great Cloud looks.....

Omg it's just too much too imagine... he will be GOAT.

I wonder if Jemnezmy will be an enemy in this, some of the weirder enemies like Tornberrys and stuff will be interesting.

I will cry if they somehow make Movers or Magic Pots more annoying in this game than in the base game lmao.

My God we need a fucking FF 8 remake now too.........

I would LOVE to see 1000 needles from Cactuar kicking ass in the desert with these graphics... holy shit.

Just remake all of FF7,8,9..... GOAT.

Late 2017. 2018 in a worst case scenario.

Do we know if this is running on the XV engine, or is it in Unreal like KHIII? And what happened to that rumour that Cyberconnect2 were involved, is that dead?

Unreal engine 4 still seems like the safest bet since we know its def not running on Luminous.

Also CC2 or bust!

Holy crap- this is going to be so amazing if they get close to a 1:1 representation of the original in terms of locations and events. The trailer seems to suggest that they are going for that, it's just hard to believe. I love what they've done with the music so far. I just don't know if I should go on media blackout from now on or not. I'm not even worried about the battle system. As long as we get a minimum of Xenoblade-level control over the party, it'll be fine.

Pray for FF XII level control.... that would be GOAT for remakes of this type.

I'm not sure media blackout is necessary at this phase. I don't imagine the game is quite as far along as some are being made to believe after today; years ago, FFXV had a barebones battle system visible. I've always held firm to the notion that Square is likely shooting for late 2017 or so for this title; there's no reason for me to assume I'm right, but if I am right, it's still two years away!

Yes! I hope Verendus is true about this, I have no reason to doubt otherwise but this franchise I thought was pretty much dead. 3rd Birthday was by all accounts, pretty crap and partially because they had no license for Parasite Eve, but Aya Brea was a Square-Enix IP. He said it's a new Parasite Eve game so I hope they can get the license again and do a proper remake of the first one, just like how good this VII Remake is.

I now own both the American and Japanese version of the first Parasite Eve and I have the UK version of Parasite Eve II. I don't have The 3rd Birthday though, I was meaning to try that at some point but never got around to getting it for my Vita (if it supported it).

If you completely ignore the fucking god-awful writing, 3rd Birthday is brilliant. The presentation and gameplay are amazing. I would really love a remake of PE.

You very likely right. This is probably all that they have of the game so far as a vertical slice.

I was legit going to reply with "DON'T GIVE THEM IDEAS!" but if Im not tripping was there not a side quest where you could actually get Tifa's underwear???

Yeah, during the Nibelheim flashback in Kalm, you can optionally go into Tifa's house and steal her underwear, and she's horrified to find this out.

So glad they got Steve Burton back. He might not be the best voice actor in the world, but he sounds exactly like Cloud should.

Burton is great. I hope Jack Fletcher's doing voice direction. Would love to hear what Burton could pull off with him in charge.

Also curious if they'll have dual audio; Lightning Returns did and it was a great novelty. Plus I love Takahiro Sakurai and Toshiyuki Morikawa's portrayals of Cloud and Sephiroth.

Seeing them keep the flip off the train animation gives me hope we'll still have the Cloud shrug.

I will say, that just from this trailer alone, the voicing/writing in FF7 is beating FF15's ass. Duscae's dialogue made me mute the games at times. This seemed tolerable at worst.

Now that the combat is still in the jury, I'm concerned how they're going to handle the world map and points of interest. Like how do one go from small happy town, Kalm to the Chocobo farm to a marsh plain with a giant serpent roaming underneath nearby, all in modern graphics?!

I'm also worried they'll make changes to the script and focuses more on events happening in Midgar and sacrifcing the rest of the world. I mean I love Midgar as much as the next guy, but a lot of interesting events happened outside of it as well. Make changes to the gameplay, but don't touch the script, story progression, world, locales, characters please!! Ignore the fools asking Aerith to be able to be revived.

It's definitely in pre alpha but it looks like they're on the right track. Honestly, I'm ok with the action direction, we have the remaster for that.

In a perfect world, there'd be a Xenoblade style map where it gives the open feeling of a world map, but really is linear with interconnected areas.

Now that people have pretty much established at this point whether they like or dislike the footage/battle system/gameplay... some follow up questions:

1. For those who are ok with a full-on remake, and them changing a lot, how much change would be too much for you? For example, hypothetically, if they just took certain towns out of the game or something. Like Kalm just wasn't in the game. Or maybe
Aeris dies at another location or in a totally different way
, or maybe they add some towns that weren't in the game at all. Say they remove or change certain bosses, and changed big chunks of the story. Would you be ok with that? Or do you draw the line eventually?

2. Do you still want materia in the game? How would you implement it?

3. For the towns and locations they do keep the same.... how closely do you want those to the originals? Do you want them just generally the same, or almost carbon copies, just with brand new graphics?

1. The main story beats should be basically the same. Anything that adds onto it without removing, or anything that simply streamlines but keeps the same core aspects, is fine. Iconic moments like the thing you talk about, those should be preserved as closely as possible. Little things they can do whatever with, and I'm a-okay with certain aspects like optional elements related to Yuffie or Vincent being expanded upon.

2. Absolutely. Pretty much the same. I'm not smart enough to think of a cool new way to implement it aside from maybe being able to switch active materia on the fly in battle.

3. Doesn't matter if they're not 1:1 recreations as long as they capture the same spirit and notable aspects. New/changed puzzles for dungeons, places that have to be readjusted so they actually work on a 3D plane, that's fine with me.

Oh god, please no. I don't want that fucking function which ruined many western games on FFVII. What makes FFVII so special (and most of FF, old JRPG) is exploration and finding new things that you don't know

I don't literally mean icons that are marked on the map, like Skyrim. I mean like the random house with the sleeping man asking for Mithril in the outer world, but is not actually displayed in the map and you have to find/stumble across it by yourself.

So what year are we betting this comes out?

2017 seems very likely.

I was surprised we got a gameplay trailer this soon, so if everything goes smoothly it really shouldn't take too long to come out.

Next year has Final Fantasy XV and World of Final Fantasy already though, so no way this is 2016, and if it was they would have said so anyway. So, yeah 2017. Lock it in.

If SE and CC2 are indeed collaborating then things might go faster than we expect, one can hope.

The game could slide into 2018 if necessary. As tuxfool pointed out in his/her reply to my other post, this is probably a vertical slice.

I have faith that Square is actively trying to get better about this sort of stuff, but I don't think they're at a level that they wouldn't still make it look like a big project is further along than it actually is.

I like the remake version of cloud the best so far.

Q6aQVf.png

What's the Cloud on the right from?

I was complaining a few pages ago about Cloud's look (too identical to Lightning, too effeminate), but wow, in contrast to that picture on the right, maybe I shouldn't have been. The Cloud on the left doesn't seem to fit the character much either. Middle is indeed the best here.

What about vs

Honestly I think that the xenoblade style map is quite a useful analogue. For the most part the map of FF7 was very well gated in most of the game. Only when you get the Highwind, you're completely free to travel anywhere.

Holy shit, can't wait to play this!

Also I'm really glad they made Cloud's design closer to the original and didn't go full Advent Children.

It's a remake not a remaster, doubt they would use the same combat mechanics as the old school FF7 today.

People keep saying this. FF4 had a remake that used the same combat. Resident Evil had a remake that had the same gameplay. A bunch of other games had a remake that didn't abandon its core gameplay.

Reimagining would be a better term if you want to go that route.

Pray for FF XII level control.... that would be GOAT for remakes of this type.

Hyper automated gameplay where you set up everything in a menu before the actual gameplay begins ?

No thanks.I liked that system in XII ,but its not something I'd like to see exported to any other entry to be frank.

Or you can be like me and never use the Gambit system.

i could see it work well with more action-centric gameplay... set up your general battlefield strategy before had, a few tactical inputs based on the next encounter, and then watch them unfold as you focus on attacks, parrying, etc

i'd probably rather have a more FF VII or even FF X, X-2/Suikoden style system but a sort of mix of FF XII or at least XIV with Kingdom Hearts could be fun

at this point, I don't really think I care what S-E does though... I mean I am open to whatever they do. I think if I try expect 1 thing too much or frame another 1 thing is 'best' then I'll just be disappointed. just keeping an open mind to whatever they do and hopefully it works out :D i'll be more happy if they do a great job making the game that _they_ want rather than an average by the books job of the game _I_ want or _fans_ want.

Some thoughts that ran through my head after I watched the trailer: The voice acting was ass, the remastered music sounded amazing, and the visuals, while good, didn't blow me away. The aesthetics didn't really match up to what I wanted in a remake, but I doubt Square was ever gonna get that part right in my eyes so I'm not too disappointed about it. There isn't enough to gauge here, but I hope Cloud isn't the mopey, brooding, emo version we see after FF7, and closer to what he was in FF7. It's exciting to see that the beginning part is gonna be expanded with additional areas and sequences, and I hope that we see more of that for the rest of the game. Honestly, I'm hoping the world is more open, with more to explore in general. Also, the part where Cloud hopped on the train, with all of those soilders shooting at and missing him, looked goofy. I really hope that scene is redone. That's all I can think of for now.
