Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Multiplayer

It only took two years, but I finally have three friends.. with Game Boy Advances and with an interest to play Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles multiplayer. We're four hours into it and so far it's been fun, but no more winging it I guess; we're getting our asses kicked in "Year 2." (I hear the game can be beaten in Year 5.)

Any GAFfers tried it out in multiplayer? The game is interesting in that you don't score experience points for killing monsters. It seems like it's all about the artifacts you score after clearing a stage. You also score various items like Alloy and Bronze that can be used to fuse new weapons, but it all gets kinda hectic when you go to town and seek out blacksmiths, etc.. all four players must stay together and can't go their own ways in town.

So here's my main question: Can you offer any tips on building ones character? (How do you buff up your characters? Is it only about buying powerful weapons and getting items like "+2 Defense artifacts?

Teh Connectivity is fun?

Building up your character comes about through at the end of each 'drop' collected you know that screen where you choose what item/powerup you will take according to how will you did on the level with your objective? that is how you up your stats for your character, and also of course through weapons/items that you wear and wield. There are guides over at GameFAQs on how to build the best weapons but for now you don't really need to worry about doing that, just enjoy the first few years without worrying too much how to buff up your characters.

We're currently on something like Year 11 in our game, and we haven't come back to it for a while because we're struggling to find bits and pieces for the most powerful weapons and armour for our characters. We tried to take on the final boss/es at around Year 8 but got trounced because we weren't powerful enough or couldn't co-ordinate ourselves well enough to defeat it. So we're just working on that now.

There is plenty of play-time to be had with the game, we're at around 40 hours or so.
The game is a lot of fun, but yes, it requires a lot of co-operation between everyone to be enjoyed.

If you ever get bored of it or want to try something new, try Four Swords, we played through this in the middle of FF:CC and had a blast, it's a lot more fun I think. :)

Great game. As for tips on how to get the best equipment for your character, as Stryder suggested, check GameFAQs. You may want to look sooner than later, so you know what rare materials you'll need when you're picking from the spoils after a boss battle.

You're right actually, we've probably passed up quite a few rare artifacts when levelling up not knowing what they were.

:lol I play FF:CC with my two brothers, but my little brother doesn't understand the meaning of co-operation. We just make him do the bitch work and carry the crystal. It's a lot of fun :)

Yeah, the co-op aspect is definitely fun. One player, "Kip," has trouble staying in the Circle of Trust.

But anyway, I'll try weeding through GameFAQS for the info. I guess re-playing some of the earlier maps for items/artifacts wouldn't hurt.

nassss fuck YEEEAAAA

damn I thought this was a short game? So in reality it takes more than 10 hours to beat?

Awesome game with 3+ players! My non gaming friends even play (OMG even a girl!), when they have never played a RPG in their lives. We are at the final boss but may just clear a few more dungeons before we tackle him again (we are over 30 hours into the game).

It starts out kinda slow and the map doesnt really open up until the end-game so you may feel it getting a little repetative, but stick with it.

Dont fall for the cow racing or chocobo mini games though, they suck and waste alot of time.

Was a good game...Underrated a bit in my opinion. The online enabled sequel for the Revolution should be very interesting. Especially since it won't require a GBA to play :lol

Another GAFer Mike and two friends played through the game.

My best advice is, don't rush to the end.

You need to build up. Don't use a guide to get to the boss before the natural time. You're meant to go back, travel around and re-attack levels.

Also, don't skip the cut scenes. You're going to want to remember the people you meet and how you interact with them.

I played it with 2 friends, we finished around year 14 I *think*. We diddn't get the uber uber equipment or anything though....you seem to reach a point where you see the same freaking traveling cut scenes over and over again and traveling around the world map just becomes a pain.

Lovley water effects and crystals though. Very pretty. The music is great too :D
Some of the character art annoyed me, particularly how all the male selkies looked incredibly metrosexual. I played one of the armour-mage guys, lots of fun.

We played for about two weeks straight and then all of a sudden stopped. However, it was great fun when we did play it. I was a male yuke, and as the primary magic user, I was given the cure ring when we obtained one. :D

I hope the DS version follows in the same gameplay and visual styles (taking a cue from Nanostray for a good top-down 3D engine). Absolutely beautiful art style, creature design, and world design.

Tried it 3-players once, but everyone became bored after the first two dungeon areas killing interest in further sessions. Always have been curious to play with more motivated peers, but it's all moot now since I traded my SP for a DS. That, and I sold the game ages ago.

We played one 12 hour session and never played again. All the fucking hardware you need is such a deterant, and is ABSOLUTELY NOT NEEDED FOR THE GAME TO WORK NO MATTER WHAT FANBOY TELLS YOU DIFFERENT. It was bullshit.

Maybe I'm missing some critical thing about the game, but I found FF:CC to be a shallow title. I played it to the end (and didn't like the infinite hour last boss battle, memories crap or lackluster ending), and the only thing I enjoyed was the impressive visuals. The only thing I can think of is that I played it single player.

It makes a big difference. There is a lot of teamwork involved in the multiplayer mode that is actually pretty fun. In the solo game, you can combine magic by yourself, so you lose the satisfaction of working well together. I found the game fun, but tbh, I think it could have used more character progression, especially for the magic classes, and the gbas as controllers was fucking stupid.

Yep, its a lot more fun telling your team members to get ready and target when combining magic. Also, given that every person with a GBA has a different default function on their screen means that there is quite a bit of communication that way too. If you're the only one with a map, you're the navigator. And in a good four player game, real roles emerge for the characters, like healer, magic user, tanker, etc. Awesome game.

Agent Dormer, StrikerObi, myself and a random 4th guy (our friend Terrell or their roommate Tom) played the hell out of this for like a week back near its release and had so much fun with it.. but then we just kinda stopped near the end of the game. I wish we'd finished it, because I thought it was very solid in multiplayer.

Sounds like most of you had a good time with it. I think the plan is just to go back to earlier stages and get some artifacts.

And maybe this is a stupid question, but when you choose bonus items (like +2 Defense or Earth Pendants) at the end of each stage, do those bonuses remain until the end of the game? I swear one of our players had six health hearts and then lost two of them when we entered the next stage..

Upgrades you get in a level are lost. Those you get at the end of one (where you choose from the stuff in that wheel, like spell rings), are perminent.

any end of stage items chosen are kept throughout the game. It is possible to have two of the same item (+2 hearts) by picking up an item you already have a permenant copy of in the dungeon. At the end of the dungeon you cannot keep it if you already own it.

Each artifact you pick up works on you during the dungeon. you don't notice it generally unless it is heats or an action slot
