Final PS3 dev kits due Dec (new pics)

Sorry if this is old - news is scattered all over the place so it's possible. I had a search through the Sony press conference thread but couldn't come up with these.

Anyway, from Watch Impress:

And the final PS3 tool..

Can anyone clarify the "XDR512MB" in the last slide? Isn't is 256MB XDR + 256MB GDDR3, or is this a change?

cool, you can probably mount that thing in a 19" rack, that means you COULD mount at least 10 of those babies.

I'm pretty sure final dev kits have more ram than the retail counterparts.

Cool pics. I'll take 7.

e: if they stick to their schedule (which they have so far), that will give devs 3-4 months before a Spring '06 launch. If it works like the PS2, US devs will have 8-9 months.

heh the final dev kit looks like a Snap Server or any other rack type server.

That rack mounted PS3 devkit looks better then the breadbin version we've seen of late. I'd take one.

i dont think so

:/

Actually, this is true sometimes.

What threw me off is there's no mention of the GDDR. But 512MB of XDR with the GDDR in the final system makes reasonable sense.

They laughed at the 2nd version as "huge!!!!!!!!" when the pic appeared before, now if they witnessed the 1st version instead at that time... :lol

oh well. maybe i am mistaken. or maybe sony increased the ram for ps3.

they did that with PSP i think.

Yep. Hell, even Bungie forgets that sometimes, haha.

edit: Hmm seems like they've changed the PS3 case a little bit.

The white PS3 is hot! They better sell that on launch day.

Agreed. I'm kind of confused why they're still showing it, though, since last I read, Kutaragi was quoted as saying that SCEI had decided since E3 on just the silver version. Maybe they're rethinking..but unfortunately I think it's likely we'll only see one colour at launch.

Black would integrate into my A/V rack much better.

Oh well.

Thats whats nice about the 360. You can slap a cheesy black plastic faceplate on it and presto!

Black XBox 360. Well, partly anyways.

Looks like we'll hopefully be saying bye-bye to any PS3 dev kit shortages by Oct/Nov.

Good slides, thanks. Two things catch my eye:

- They are behind Xbox 360 in terms of tool delivery a LOT. Not a year, but almost
- What's the point of DirectX vs. OpenGL ES slide?

Do you mean in terms of dev kit delivery? MS has had lots of kit out, but nowhere near as final as the 3000+ PS3 kits in Nov will be. I'm sure MS will have similar numbers, or more, of final X360 kits by that time, but in terms of final kits, Sony is only trailing MS by maybe 4 months (assuming final X360 kits hit in Aug). About the same as the gap between releases, so it seems reasonable.

I was quite worried about how many kits Sony would get out this year, but that they even have a plan for large numbers is a relief (hopefully they'll execute well on that now).

Re. the slide with DX on it etc. I think they were just highlighting how their pipeline is "open" etc.

Before E3 Microsoft had shipped ~4000 alpha kits.

If Sony gets out 3000 by October that puts them on a similar schedule. These projections seem to be for non-RSX kits as those aren't due until December.

Kits are one thing, but Xbox360 devs had had specs to work with for almost 18 months, and end tools like PIX and other goodies

So how much behind would you say Sony is? Of course Sony and MS have different approaches so they aren't directly comparable. Still, considering what is known about ongoing development, my estimate is around 9 months, substantiating the "BS!!" yell my intuition shouted in May when I heard the "Spring 2006" street date.

They could make Spring in Japan like they did with PSP with some quick games, though.

What really puzzles me is that I don't quite understand what is the bottleneck component putting them so much behind in schedule. Cell exists and the NVIDIA tech exists, assuming G70 is very close.

I think about 9 month is about right. Sony is doing some really smart things though, like including Unreal Engine 3 and various other middleware to allow developers to rapidly get content up and running.
