Finally NeoWave!

March 24, 2005 - It's been out for months in the arcades, and now it's coming home. SNK Playmore announced today plans to bring The King of Fighters Neowave to the PS2. The game will hit Japan on 6/23. Neowave was noted as the first King of Fighters game to run on the Atomiswave arcade board, which SNK Playmore has chosen to replace the dated Neo Geo hardware. Despite the new hardware, the game looks and plays similar to past entries in the series. A stateside release has yet to be announced.

GEEZ take long enough! NeoWave is probably the most balanced KOF since 98 with the cheapest boss ever. Thinking i might just have to import this one.

Why didn't SNK just call it KoF Atomiswave? I'd ditch the radical 3d backgrounds for some updated character sprites.

Isn't it just a redone KOF2002?
Isn't [2002] just a redone 98? Neowave is yes another dreammatch but made by SNK not some other dev Eolicrapth. It has a groove system similar to CvS2 and plays very nicely. 98 still gets alot of play in Japan too.

not really sure why, Neowave was originally 2004. With Neowave the first title running on atomiswave, the spites are supposed to be more smooth compared to 2002/2003.

Insta-buy.
Win!

Okay. I don't know much about Neowave other than little tidbits here and there.

Does it have any characters 2002 doesn't?

Just think KOF 2002 with new high-res 2D backgrounds, a new soundtrack (which I could not hear at the arcade), and none of the characters from KOF 2000+. (Except for Kula) It's almost like more of a sequel to KOF '98 than KOF 2002 is, with a few characters from KOF '99 thrown in. Young Geese (from Art Of Fighting 2) is the only "new" character.

There's also some new game play systems using the Atomiswave's fifth button; you can think of it as ISMs from SFA3. One of them lets you do Just Defends IIRC.

I also heard the game is very balanced, but it was hard to get excited for this game when I saw it (at release, for once) since it really is NOTHING new, and it also uses sprites from KOF 2002, not the redrawn or better-animated sprites from KOF 2003. They did do something to the sprites to make them look a bit more colorful/brighter compared to the Neo-Geo games. They look better than the KOF 2003 PS3 sprites do with the smoothing option turned on.

BTW guys, The Rumblefish came out for PS2 last week. Turned out a lot better than I thought it was when I played it in the arcade, but still nothing quite stellar.

Choi, Young Geese, Jhun, Saishu are definately top-tier.

The game is better in kof 2002 cuz they really did a good job making super move canceling worthwhile for many characters.

That CD unblockable wire move is really nice too.

This is coming to PSP as well right ?
I'll wait for your impressions but lately I seem to be alone when it comes to tastes in fighters since a lot of you enjoyed Maximum Impact while I thought it was crap.

Brandon, remember that visually,Neowave is just KOF 2002 (same sprites) with new high-res backgrounds. Same old animation, which looks worse compared to KOF 2003.

No, a KOF based on Maximum Impact is currently scheduled to hit the PSP.

I think it's just me that liked Maximum Impact; everyone else here hated it. :) I thought MI was a good attempt at making the series 3D, and made a good game for BEGINNERS, not for seasoned KOF vets. It's the kind of game that a KOF fan can play with friends that normally wouldn't play KOF at all IMO.

I still haven't snagged 2002/2003. Never did spend much time with either, at least legally. Last KoF I really played heavilly was '99 on DC.

How do the backdrops compare to the remixed ones in 2k2/3 on PS2?

You really ought to go pick it up for PS2; definitely worth the $40. KOF 2003 in particular got so many PS2 enhancements that it feels like a new game compared to the Neo-Geo version.

Different since the new backgrounds in 2002/2003 are 3D; Neowave uses static 2D backgrounds, which feel somewhat "empty" since there's little to nothing going on in them. KOF 2002 has 3D versions of its original backgrounds, plus two new ones, and KOF 2003 gets brand new 3D backdrops (which look great for the most part) based on the original stages.

I can take some screenshots if you want.

Visually, this is still the best KOF:

It's disappointing that Neowave didn't get the same high-res sprites treatment that KOF '94 Rebout got.
