Finally.. PSP game load time annoys

Anyhow, been playing Untold Legends and I don't know what the hell the developers were thinking...

BOOTUP.. takes 13+ seconds, enters the logo screen and then it goes to a stupid intro (PROLOGUE)...... I mean, I have a sale file.. at least bypass that prologue.

skip that.. and its another 10+ to get to the menu screen

Load game = another 12+ seconds.

It takes like forever to start a game. Ridiculous.. And I don't know if anyone gets this but when you access the inventory screen - the items images have to load. Takes like 2-3 seconds to appear when you have a bit of stuff.

It was annoying enough at E3, where you tried to play a demo unit and spent a minute waiting for the game to load.

They weren't optimized, though - currently I can survive FIFA 2005 loading times, but barely.

You know you can bypass that prologue intro right? I forget which key it is while it's scrolling.. yeah it's annoying, thank god for sleep mode though.. and yes I get the picture items loading issue occasionally too.

In ATV I believe it takes 2 minutes and 30 seconds to boot up the system and actually start playing. :/ Still have played the hell out of that game, it's just really annoying.

My usual boot up time is about 1 second.

Sure the real bootup takes a lot time, but I usually avoid them by playing one game at a time and just using sleep mode.

The ingame load times range from very good to just a little annoying, depending on the game. Actually I find myself bothered by load times very rarely.

Yeah, it just took the right game to annoy me...

I bought five games at launch (Lumines, RR, Wipeout, Twisted Metal, and MGA). All 5 of them have very fast loadtimes that beat out the console originals. Lumines and MGA are especially fast (with MGA actually having no real load screens).

Later on, I picked up Mercury and Ape Escape. Mercury was the first to annoy me. The early stages are all very short and easy. You spend 12 seconds waiting per puzzle and when the puzzle only takes 20 seconds or less to beat, the annoyance picks up quickly. Thankfully, beyond the first world, the puzzles are much longer and a bit more challenging so the waiting is no longer a huge issue.

Ape Escape is just awful, though. You have to wait for EVERYTHING. Boot game -> load -> SCE logo -> load -> intro -> short load -> menu -> load -> hub -> load -> level select -> level intro -> load -> play level (with some mid level loading points). That's just flat out bad programming right there. No excuse.

The system can CLEARLY handle data in a more efficient manner, as demonstrated by some games...but it seems to be tough to handle. The Death Jr. guys seem to have done well, though. The game has VERY few load points, apparently, and each point lasts only 4-5 seconds (and does so by blurring the previous image into the next area). Very nice.

It really reminds me of the original PSX days. Games like Blood Omen, for example, could not even play voice and music at the same time and there were lengthy loads involved when simply visiting the pause menu. :\

So, basically, if loading in a PSP game can match or exceed my launch titles, I'm happy. You rarely see load screens, and when you do, they aren't that long...plus sleep mode means that you really don't have to wait anyways. Stuff like Ape Escape, though, is damn near ruined by loading.

Burnout times were hilarious... pretty sure that won't be the real deal, but it's strange they choose to drop the demo in a event that you have no time to loose.

I know you can bypass the prologue. I just wonder why they had to go to that screen... it literally takes 10+ seconds to load the prologue . It should ONLY be displayed when you start a new game, not when you boot up. Doesn't change the fact that if you boot the game up, it WILL go to that prologue screen. . An extra 10+ seconds? Big boo

If PSP developers read GAF... try to minimise these interface highjinks thanks!

SLEEP MODE !!!

if you jump in and out of game (say media/video/mp3/games) then sleep mode has only limited value.

But it does rock!

Untold Legends is the worst offender of load times in all the games I own. You have 30 second load times when you go to new areas and when you want to warp back to the main town. So annoying. Everything else I own loads fairly quickly though.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the backwards thinking loading and button presses required to play a game of Wipeout Pure.

Do I really need to select my language every time I play the game? Am I going to try out French for a lark some time? Do I really need to be reminded to not remove the memory stick during loads and saves? Do I really need to manually load the SINGLE save file I have on my memory stick? Do you really think I want to watch the opening cinematic everytime I play this game? Do I really need to "confirm" that the PSP has loaded my save file?

Seriously, guys. I know that I can do all of this with 8 or so button presses, but this is PORTABLE gaming. I should be able to jump into this much easier than I do. Please give me the option to have a game just auto-load everything.
