Super Mario 64.

It's Super Mario Bros, obviously.
Maybe for it's time, but platformers is kind of a archaic genre.

Super Mario Bros., the home video game industry was dead and buried (literally under a desert in the case of ET) until Nintendo came out and that was the game everyone was playing.

GoldenEye 007 being absent as an option is absurd. This game single-handedly popularized the FPS genre on consoles years before Halo, which often gets the credit for doing so. Everything Halo is known for was already being done by GoldenEye 007.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare- completely transformed the FPS genre, and how single player and MP existed and worked in these games.

The format used to be - the single player/campaign was the focus point, and then you threw in a couple of maps for MP that let you have some mindless fun to "keep it going".

But Modern Warfare changed the game- made MP the main event and the campaign (if its even there)- its largely just a short lived tech demo to ease you into the MP. With this, they added the whole progression system that's been synonymous of what pretty much all shooters do now that keeps you playing endlessly, giving you upgrades, new weapons/mods, skins, cosmetics, along with ranks, and gave you purpose of more than that mindless fun.

After this game dropped, what MS/Bungie was doing with Halo (up to that point, being massively popular)- simply wasn't enough for a FPS package anymore. And I truly think it's why CoD is what it still is today, while Halo is kind of struggled with its identity in the post MW landscape. They've certainly tried to apply MW-style progression in later releases, but it has never really resonated or felt anywhere near as compelling since.

DOOM, Ocarina of Time and RE4

Voted Ocarina of Time because out of those it's the one I like the most.

I think alot of those games revolutionize their respective genres,

For me- MGS1 revolutionized the action/stealth genre and from that point forward we saw alot of what MGS started; - in other games. It was a huge wow moment for me on multiple fronts.
So i voted for MGS, specifically 1.

Space Invaders, not on the list.

The first breakthrough game that was a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Started the shump genre (all later developers did was add a scrolling background). Many companies only started making games becuse space invaders showed then how much money they could make.

Half Life...yep!

I don't want to minimize Half-life, but Doom trailblazed the FPS shooter genre prior to Half-life. Doom wasn't the first, but it popularized the genre more than any other as well as made folks aware of the games that preceded it like Wolfenstein and System Shock.

It's World of Warcraft because what other game on the list is as totally boring, insipid, full of recurring payments, and demands you base your whole way of life around playing it and supporting it.

Doom was cool as well....yeah! Played it in school during IT studies with the other guys via lan. Good times! :pie_starstruck:

While that's 100% true, Half-Life was also a turning point in the FPS genre: We went from open, maze-like levels full of stuff to shoot to more linear, but also more scripted and interesting sequences.

Imo Half-Life is what lead to Medal of Honor and the popularity of the military shooters during the late 00s-early 10s.

Also thank god and thanks Dusk for brining the retro shooters back lol.

Yeah, I agree. So looking at the thread topic, I think we can compromise. Which was the defining game of FPS? I think it is Doom. Which was the most influential? That's Half-life

It's basically the Star Wars of video games

The Concord is the Concord of airplanes.

Concord/10

It's the Concord of automobiles

Concord Reborn

Concord reboot

I blame Concord.

Concord VR confirmed

Concord was robbed.

Concord coming to Xbox

Concord should've been one of them

Welcome to the largest Concord fan community on the internet, Freegunners

1 Concord official shattered. Can it reach 2?

Every day I pray for a new Concord. I think god answered my prayers.

Concord 2.0 confirmed!!

X1Pz7Jl.gif

Hermen was right about one thing: Concord is the future of PlayStation.

Fairgame$ vs Marathon, which one will become the next Concord? Those are big shoes to fill.

Maybe it's a totally new game set in the Concord trans-media universe.

I hope that others fail to learn the lessons or Concord. That was some of the best entertainment I've ever seen in the history of video games.

Sony, give us Concord 2!

Time to resurrect the Concord trans-media entertainment universe.

Will they reveal how much they actually spent on Concord??

^ don't forget that Concord was supposedly Hermen Hulst's baby that nobody was allowed to criticize.

Maybe he should blame himself for the toxic positivity. You can totally tell that the public beta test was the first time that this game was exposed to honest, unfiltered criticism.

Wow that's a Concord sized disaster.

Only if they bring back Concord.

Nothing can beat Concord. Just look at this shit.

$400 million flushed down the toilet because nobody had the balls to tell them that gamers didn't want this.

I wonder if this could actually do less than 1 Concord at launch. PlayStation Studios should pay all their employees to play this on launch day just to avoid all the "Fairgame$ had even less players than Concord" headlines.

Concord

Astro Bot

Oh my god, that was really like Concord but with worse production values. I can't stop laughing at this.

Concord is such a massive influence in the gaming industry. Every western studio wants to make their own Concord it seems.

Darn, I really hoped Concord 4 would be further along by now.

- Concord reboot

- Concord 2

- Concord HBO series

It's getting close to the 10 Concord mark. Anybody playing it yet?

I see we're still running version 1.0 of the humor plugin. How many times you gonna do this joke? Talk about rent free....lol

Impossible to say. No game defines the industry.

That said, if I had to pick the one that comes closest, Mario 64.

Sounds like I'm the one living rent free in your head. I'm honored!

I voted Super Mario 64 for modern 3d video games for its pioneering/popularizing on multiple front - from the analog controls, level design, camera etc etc.

For anyone thinking they've got the right answer with stuff like Goldeneye, Half-life, Resident Evil, MGS etc... Just try going out and grabbing a random nobody off the street and asking if they've heard of any of them.

This is how things exploded into the mainstream, there was no going back after this, and many of the main tropes in gaming to this day were defined here.

Never won't be funny.

I agree, but from a multiplayer perspective, it was very good. I didn't want people going nuts as to why I didn't include Halo.

Couldn't choose any more poll options. That was the limit.

Obviously Mario, Doom and arguably GTA.

Some ludicrous inclusions in there btw
🤣
Which ones do you not agree with ?
They all had a large impact, in my opinion. Obviously some more than others.

Influence people.

Voted for Half-Life. For better or worse it brought storytelling and cinematic set pieces into the mainstream action games space in a big way. Judging by interviews with other developers at the time, it shook the whole industry.

If I were more subjective, as in games that influenced and steered my favourite genres, it would be a toss up between X-com '94, Fire Emblem, Ultima and Wizardry.

I think it's important to first define what exactly is considered an industry defining game.
Many games which are listed in the options aren't industry defining.
They were simply lucky enough to be the first to implement maturing technology.
In other words, they were natural progressions of the industry and thus not industry defining.

Therefor, 3 criteria must be met to be considered industry defining:
  1. The game doesn't require novel technology and only uses technology which are already widely available at the time
  2. The game comes up with new gameplay concepts, controller mapping or monetization scheme
  3. The industry chases these new gameplay concepts, uses the controller mapping as a base for their games or implements the same way of monetizing as the game which introduced it.
When looking at these criteria, I would look at games which are the most copied after for its concepts.
IMO these games are:
  • Demon's Souls
  • WoW
  • Fortnite

Doom for first person shooters with 3dfx Voodoo cards added, so many great fps games came along after that in the 90's and beyond.

Should have included Virtua Fighter on the list..

It's not the most popular game, but it was pretty important...
