Finally! Viewtiful Joe 1 beaten...

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Cleared it with Dante on Adult, took about 8 hours according to the final gameclock. Hell, I didn't even finish upgrading Dante before it was over, had a couple more heart containers left to buy.

Aamzing how even after nearly 2 years hiatus, how quickly I was able to jump right back in. I still recalled the patterns to Hulk Davison and the shark guy. Fire Leo was easilly the most difficult hurdle of the game, took MUCH trial and error to work out the routine, but man it felt great pwning his ass. The final boss(es) were equally traumatic for about 30 minutes of retries, once I nailed the pattern I got a Rainbow V score. :D

I really loved that entire final level, just a real neat gauntlet with some light puzzles, combo frenzy. The Mech Leo's got kinda annoying, but were pretty much no problem given all the practice from Fire Leo.

Still have to someday actually finish with Joe though, I did enjoy a lot of the in-jokes in Dante's game, particularly when fighting Alastor. Found it humorous that even Six Machine was replaced with the prop plane from DMC1. I may have to try playing Alastor sometime for pure curiosity.

Now on to VJ2...

I remember importing this for GC a long time ago. This game was so fucking slick, I'm going to play right now. Thanks dude, you renewed my faith in games!

You are a better man than I... I need to beat this game. Then open my shrinkwrapped VJ2 on GC. :P

I loved this game...never finished it though :( Sold the GC version and bought the PS2 one...haven't finished that either. I'll finish it one day myself! (you've inspired me!)

VJ2 is a much better game IMO
Due to semi-satisfactory reviews I never purchased/rented it. I always loved the difficulty and levels of the first one, also the kick-ass end fight. What's better in the second?

The levels and music are better. If you liked VJ1 you will surely like this too. It's easier though, so you might wanna play it on Hard right away.

My 2 cents -
I like VJ 1 a little bit more than 2 (admittedly I haven't beaten 2 yet). I like the levels in 2 more, but the bosses are more repetitive and less fun/challenging than 1 (imo). But, both are great (and only like $20, no reason not to get both).

Yeah, Silvia does suck. You only need her for her Replay ability. Other than that, it's Joe all the way.

In the end, I preferred VJ 1 to VJ 2 mainly because 1 was more difficult but 2 did have better music and was much more inspired on the movie theme. 1 had better humor IMO. Both great games still. I finished 1 on V-Rated when it first came out. Only beat 2 on adult. I'll get back to it someday.

About 4 stages into VJ2 so far(Adult mode), it's definately more of the same with the added twist of subbing Silvia in to solve some 'replay' gimmick obstacle. She really isn't all that.

I'm actually pretty impressed that Clover didn't regurgitate many of the thematic puzzles from the first game though. I half expected the return of Joker and the slot machine ad-nauseum again, but they did a pretty solid jump pumping new creativity into the level design in this game...for the most part.

Combat is still identical, and the new techniques like charged character swapping/six cannon, Joe's throw, or Silvia in general just don't deliver much since combat still boils down to dodging->slowing->juggling, with the occasional Zoom'd RHOH for quick punishment.

The bosses are weaker to the first game so far, I mean is there ANY possible way to actually stun or manipulate the flow of combat with that first dino boss? That fight could be the absolute worst in the entire two games, mostly because of how limited you are in fighting, but there is seemingly no "free hit!" reward for successful dodges or counters like the other bosses, just a total grind. There has been an improvement as the game progresses(camo leon was neat, and Alastor was not bad) So far the first game definately has cooler bosses.

Yeah, there really isn't much you can do against the first boss except for just dodging his attacks and attacking normally. RHOH works really well on him when you dodge his flame attack but you can't stun him by dodging. Sure you can use VFX slow when the tanks launch their cannon balls and then the boss will land and the explosions will end up damaging him, but that is about as deep as the strategy gets with him. I agree that the first one had better bosses but I really like the environments better in the second game.

Yea, the best damage output was that artillery barrage, there was no way I could turn the flame barrels on him similarly either which was unfortunate. Since the game witheld Zoom until Level 3, Joe's actually punches were criminally lame against him. Maybe Silvia's gun hurt more? Doubtful... For an introductory boss, Capcom really dropped the ball.

The stages are really cool though.

The various stages really are the highlight of the game. The ending is a great surprise. :D
I forgot you don't have Zoom at that point, but don't worry about that. ;)

What are your thoughts on the difficulty thus far?

Difficulty seems about on par with VJ1...hard to say really, this game does give a lot more save/checkpoints so I feel I am moving along faster.

VJ2 is hard. But when you calm down and don't bash your GC or PS2 in, you can beat the bosses. But I almost quit where you had to light up the torches. Didn't know how to do it and thought Capcom were stupid for designing a puzzle that you can not solve.

The torches were a headscratcher for me at first too, but I've learned that "when in doubt, use 'replay'".

I do hate those new electric boxes only Silvia can break, I often lose more health trying to open them, that the single burger they usually drop is a complete insult to my boobery. I laugh out loud when the sparks hit my replay kick and deliver triple damage...and then I throw my controller. I hate those boxes...

Man, Viewtiful Joe? What the hell are you doing, Folken? That doesn't have dungeons OR loot. Come wait around on PSO:BB servers like all the cool kids are!

I'd love to, but my graphics card is acting up, getting artifacts and blackouts whenever I load anything involving 3D. I dunno if something is up with drivers, or the Radeon is fuxxored, but I do know PSO:BB isn't happening. :(

Up to the final level of VJ2 already. This game just flew by, probably because my skills are honed from finishing VJ1, but the severe influx of checkpoints/saves almost ensured I never had to replay a section twice. (Surprisingly the most difficult area I found was the six machine sub level, had to play through it about 5 times) Amazed that Capcom pussified the boss rush level this time. Savepoints between each one?? Guess there are a lot of people happy about that switch.

Shoulda known another Fire Leo would appear, though Kudos to Capcom for devising a really unique pattern set to toppling Ice Leo despite the similarities to his clone from VJ1. In fact, most of the lategame bosses rocked! Dr. Kraken was great as was Cameo leon. The T. Rex boss still stinks though.

Oh and the plotline of this game is BEYOND insipid. "Rainbow Oscars?", "Black Film?" BARF! They should drop the whole movie gimmick and go with a Capcom Legacy plan for VJ3. Bionic Commando world! Ghosts n Goblins land! Even a Street Fighter visit would be neat.
