Someone throws out racist remark about black people in front of my face, thinking because I'm Pakistani I will feel the same way. I reveal my mom is black, this person then proceeds to take everything back.
I have a bunch of friends that, although I don't think they're outright racists, every now and then say things that really bother me. Like for example, a couple of years ago on our senior trip, a few people were constantly making "nigger" jokes...which I thought was especially stupid since we had a couple of black people around too. I felt really embarrassed by the whole thing, for them.
Also...I have another friend who's otherwise cool, but says that he thinks black chicks are disgusting. WTF? How can you dismiss the women of an entire race like that? It seems beyond people that not everyone who's black is the same. And it's especially odd in this case, because he loves Indian women, and they often look very similar to black women...
The only way to handle a situation like this is to express how surprised you are that she hates black people since "her people" are usually so tollerant.
"My people," she asks.
"Well, maybe I'm wrong but your face, the way you talk and stuff... I just assumed that you were Jewish..."
People who're militant about any of their beliefs usually aren't worth hanging around with.
I don't really care what someone thinks of the "average" person of a given ethnic group. If someone was to hold the belief that a difference in a given trait between an average minority and the rest of society was attributable to (at least in part) genetics, I wouldn't avoid them. That's really the belief that's at the heart of "racism". It's an issue of science; and one that has a complete lack of conclusive evidence to prove anyone "right". There's yet to be a study that can completely isolate race as an independent variable, and there likely never will be.
A rational, sane person would never take those beliefs to such an extreme as to suspect that every individual belonging to a minority is a polarized charicture of what their ethnic group (allegedly) has a marginal inclination towards. When you hear someone yelling out "THOSE NIGS LOOK SUSPICIOUS!", it has less to do with the belief itself so much as it has to do with being a worthless piece of shit.
She's not bat-shit insane because she holds "racist" beliefs. The two just happen to fall together in this instance.
I hear all these messed up stories, but why do so many of you guys just let it go? Some people had some fairly reasonable excuses, but some of these stories just left me hanging. If a friend or an acquaintance says something stupid to me, I will tell them off right on the spot. Part of what makes these assholes so stupid is people never saying anything to them.
