Fired Miami cops joked about using black neighborhoods for target practice

“My clients are young kids. They’re young officers and they were off-duty” when making their comments, he said. “I can’t let their careers be tarnished when they engaged in no misconduct.”

Say that to the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends whose lives, that the likes of your clients, have destroyed.

Reprimand and fire the officers who actually practice bad policing or are involved in shootings. Firing these guys who are barely out of the academy feels like a bunch of nothing that they can hold over the public to prove that they are doing a better job at weeding out the bad apples.

Police unions, and department polices might it hard for cops to be fired. The reason these cops were fired was due to the fact that they were considered probationary cops.

Oh good, it's the "these adults are actually just kids" defense. Yet Tamir Rice was considered to look older than he actually was.

I remember reading this, too.

WASHINGTON — Black boys as young as 10 may not be viewed in the same light of childhood innocence as their white peers, but are instead more likely to be mistaken as older, be perceived as guilty and face police violence if accused of a crime, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

“Children in most societies are considered to be in a distinct group with characteristics such as innocence and the need for protection. Our research found that black boys can be seen as responsible for their actions at an age when white boys still benefit from the assumption that children are essentially innocent,” said author Phillip Atiba Goff, PhD, of the University of California, Los Angeles. The study was published online in APA’s Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Researchers tested 176 police officers, mostly white males, average age 37, in large urban areas, to determine their levels of two distinct types of bias — prejudice and unconscious dehumanization of black people by comparing them to apes. To test for prejudice, researchers had officers complete a widely used psychological questionnaire with statements such as “It is likely that blacks will bring violence to neighborhoods when they move in.” To determine officers’ dehumanization of blacks, the researchers gave them a psychological task in which they paired blacks and whites with large cats, such as lions, or with apes. Researchers reviewed police officers’ personnel records to determine use of force while on duty and found that those who dehumanized blacks were more likely to have used force against a black child in custody than officers who did not dehumanize blacks. The study described use of force as takedown or wrist lock; kicking or punching; striking with a blunt object; using a police dog, restraints or hobbling; or using tear gas, electric shock or killing. Only dehumanization and not police officers’ prejudice against blacks — conscious or not — was linked to violent encounters with black children in custody, according to the study.

The police actually serve a functional purpose in some places. I feel like if it were easier to expunge the worthless shit flakes then maybe the US could be one of those countries with a useful police force.

To be fair, yes unions are what protect and allow police forces to rot. They need to change first.

Here we have three rookie officers revealing that they have little regard for the neighborhoods they're sworn to serve by sociopathically joking about killing the very citizens they're sworn to protect. Why do you think they should have been allowed to remain on the force after such a display? What an officer does off duty should affect his job every much as what a teacher does outside of a classroom, and we seem to scrutinize that profession to no end. There would be no widespread defense force for the firing of three teachers caught sharing off the clock jokes about sexually grooming teenagers. These three former officers don't deserve one either.

It's crazy how police unions consistently use their power to defend reprehensible actions by their members. They actually do what conservatives lie about teacher unions doing.

glad I live in a white neighborhood. only black person on the entire street.

I'm safe, right?

People should be sensitive when they are joking but there's a difference between posting in an assumed public forum and posting in some private chat thing. It's not idealism to say that every police member on the force should be sensitive regarding how they talk on and off the job but you think someone should be fired over a joke? I wouldn't fire a teacher for sending me a DM joking about grooming if it was clear that it was a joke. I'm not arguing they should stay on the force but firing an employee on probation is obviously for show. Send the guys who have already killed innocent people to prison and then maybe I'll care.

They can be rolling on the floor laughing claiming it's a joke all they want but to the people in those neighborhoods, the people who depend on their fair judgement and treatment, it's no laughing matter. If their idea of a joke is using citizens for target practice, they can find another job. The plight of those communities, their justified fear of the police, and in the wake of multiple officers within the ranks that are supposed to protect them showing their racist beliefs, this is all very serious. If they wanted to laugh, they could laugh about something else, but they destroy the trust of citizens and prove nothing about how not racist or professional they are by laughing at killing people. These small moments and the big moments of bigotry need to be weeded out just the same when what's on the line is people's lives.

I mean this is what most cops really think of impoverished neighborhoods or any area where there's a majority minority presence.

Those cops just got caught being honest.

i like how one their arguments is pointing out that other cops were doing worse and they're really the ones being discriminated against.

maybe they can go on dancing with the stars

In a way I get it; this would actually be the kind of joke I might make. I just would never have made a joke like that at work.

I don't make racist jokes:
With coworkers or where they can be seen by them
Around 99% of my white friends
Around people I don't know

It ain't the union that's making the force shitty though they definitely ain't helping either.
