The pictures of the surface are being taken with the NASA developed Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer. So I don't think it's that.

The more likely answer is... they saw an alien.

i guess.. but the way the article is worded.. it sounds like they only removed one image.

I don't know specifically about this probe, but I remember reading how when the ones currently on Mars want to take a color image, they remain stationary and take several greyscale images through color filters, which can then be combined again into color images.
