I don't know what you mean, but the point of a real adaptation is "Could I see this person on the train and not be piqued by it?" I would say yes to this one picture. I would definitely say no to 99% of cosplay.

The original had like 2 short action scenes and the rest was spent drowning on about philosophical ideas of man and machine. It's a little overrated nowadays. Stand Alone Complex is when GitS really got the cyberpunk ball rollin.

Can't wait for the live action Akira to start back up, so we can see James Franco as Kaneda.

Comparing these pics and I think she looks fine. She was one of my first choices for the character even before she was cast.

I don't share the obsessive desire of having actors look exactly like the pre-existing characters they portray(look in ANY comic book movie adaption thread), so I like this. She's more than Black Widow. She's a really good actress. That's all I want.
Not to mention that anime characters never look Asian. Or that she probably won't be Asian in this film. They probably won't use Asian names for the character. They're changing the setting but keeping the story, which is fine.


If this movie sucks it won't be because of her.

I was honestly keeping an open mind, because the Major has never looked Japanese in basically any of her iterations but that is the norm with like 99% of Japanese anime characters anyway so....I don't even know how to feel. Beyond the obvious issue of Scarlett's non-asian-ness, it's the artificial side-fringes that really throw off the look. They're far too contrived, it gives it a cosplay look rather than something potentially more natural.

You should stick to Japanese live action anime movies not a white person in sight even when the character is supposed to be white. They try to follow the source material no matter how goofy or impossible the look is in live action. 99% of them turn out to be shit.

Wow I'm super tired of people throwing the "whitewashing" thing at Scarlett for being casted as Motoko, did you guys even saw the movie and the SAC serie?

Motoko Kusanagi doesn't look japanese one bit, except from the Arise prequel maybe.

The Major is about extremely thick charisma, and that's what Scarlet provides, it's actually a really smart cast whether it was intentional or not.
Please stop vainly repeating what you saw someone else write without thinking about it, there's only one image from this movie, calling it trash right now doesn't make any sense.

And about the director, if you guys actually watched his shorts and his Snow White movie, his editing pace and esthetic choices could actually be a really good fit for an adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Only thing that worries me is that I hope he gets better writers this time.
