Hmmm I don't really like her look in that profile. What other actresses could have fit the bill aesthetically and acting-wise?

See same face, eyes and skin, motoko is Japanese but her artificial body isn't so ScarJo can work

If its an exact live adaptation with the same music and is basically a shot for shot remake I believe it could have a great following and would love to see it. When I pitch the movie to others they back down after they hear its an anime. however it probably wont be good but goddammit more GITS is never a bad thing.
From what I've heard of the last few Ghost in the shell shows that's probably not the case.

You know this has nothing to do with the artificial body.

The entire movie will probably be set in New York and everyone will be a white

Like I get the criticism, but no, the supporting cast begs to differ.

Now that is something to be upset about. However i was addressing the motoko and Scarjo complaints. I agree that the music will probably be dubstep and it'll be in new York and suck but the motoko should be Asian goes against the themes of the movie

Acting-wise is the issue. The list of female actors in action parts within the last five years is pretty small. Lucy Liu would be a decent choice for acting and would help stop the whitewashing claims while still being a big name, but she is out of question. Maggie Q would be another option. Margot Robbie was the first choice, but she opted to focus on her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.

An you better believe that she will play herself in this movie. Not the character, really don't think i have the confident in her ability to deliver the dialogue, themes, about personal worth and the intellectual talking points that are Transhumanism. Plus Scarjo is oversatuated in my opinion and i would have been totally fine with someone else a little less in movies all the time but with better performances. An a better director, producers and writers.

For the millionth time in this thread, I will tell someone to go watch Under the Skin or Lost in Translation and then re-evaluate Johansson from there.

So you'd be fine if Johannson's character was named motoko kusanagi and not a western name

My only concern is that ScarJo doesn't strike me as a particularly tough woman. Strong, yes, but not tough in the sense that Kusanagi is. Mostly because of her voice. During Her, I thought her performance was strong and her voice actually fit with the narrative of the movie. It was nice and pleasant to listen to.

Kusanagi's voice has more, well, 'toughness' - it's the only way I can describe it.

I don't care so much about the whitewashing in this case because a lot of the cast even in manga seem to be white-ish. I do wish Hollywood would have respected the source material a bit more though and at least make Kusanagi's actress actually Asian. There's a lot of fine acresses out there that would fill the role quite nicely.

The idea of American GITS misses the entire point of GITS.

If it's not set in Japan, it doesn't make sense.

Honesty, it just looks like Scarlett Johansson in a cheap wig. This is an odd casting choice, even for a western adaptation. I expect a Lucy level performance from her.

The original GITS film is so well crafted, it continues to hold up. So I personally do not see the point in "remaking" it. Although at the same time, why the hell not I guess.

I don't care what people say manga gits is the best.

Remember the lesbian VR vacation on a yacht with the VR Drugs or something like that.

Also remember that badass first mission to crackdown on the guys using the processing power of kidnapped kids and the kids left clues in the cyber attacks they committed that shit is still next level clever in a scfi setting

It's weird cause she dresses like a person in the manga so I have no clue why that was a thing to begin with.

she also has crazy lesbian dream sex in the manga they inexplicably cut out of the anime, so i think they just take the bits they think will fit the format and add new stuff whenever

Anyway besides Scarjo, because she just a actor and has to do what she can with the material she gets. The main problem here is that i don't trust the creative team behind this film at all, it will reek of phoned in unless magic happens.

I just pray they use similar music to the original movie. Besides that I'm waiting on a trailer to get my hopes up, until then its gonna suck

Well for me the pudding is not looking good.

They almost literally have no films under their belts that are worth anything. Especially in this realm when it comes to its genre and themes. Only one person has a note worthy movie and its about NWA.

Plus

You know who would have been perfect for this movie? Alex Garland he knows scfi and he knows action and themes. An differently knows female characters.

I think Olivia Thirlby would have worked for GITS personally.

What? You don't trust Avi Arad and Steven Paul? The team that brought us the hit hero classic, Ghost Rider? :P

But, yeah, the film is almost definitely going to be complete jank like every other big adaptation from the last decade. Maybe the writers are.. unproven writers who haven't worked on more than a single real movie...

The only real guarantee about this movie is that it will look good. Jess Hall, the cinematographer, has done some fantastic work. The director and editor team both worked on Snow White and the Huntsman which, if nothing else (and there really was nothing else..), looked fantastic.

The good thing about having a team of mostly untested creators is that, every once in a while, they might surprise you. I'll withhold judgement for a bit, but I'm still not expecting much.

Lol right

The person that should be doing this is Alex Garland (as i mentioned) then my confidence would be through the roof.

This movie will be like the Resident Evil franchise. Full of slow motion shots to rock music. Maybe they'll throw in some techno babble here and there.

Come to think of it there kind of already is a western movie heavily inspired by GITS in terms of themes and visuals. It's called The Matrix.
