First pics with my new digital SLR (56k warning)

I finally made the transition from film to digital when I purchased a Canon EOS 20D digital SLR a few days ago. I took my yellow lab Duncan down to the nearby river (Back River, Baltimore Co., MD) at sunset for my first shooting session.

I had some nice light to work with, I hope you like these shots.

I likes.

But I hope that artifacting in the second to last pic (branches over the lake at sunset) is due to your own compression of the file and not in the raw image.

Regarding the artifacting, I think that came in with resizing the pic.

I got the 20D (body only) from B&H Photo Video online for $1369. I already had Canon 28-105 and 100-300 lenses from my Elan IIe. You can get it with an inexpensive kit lens for about a hundred more.

I like. I'll have to start a photobucket account and show off my shots sometime.

My uncle and a friend of mine both hace the Canon 20D. I'll be using my Canon C8080 until the day that I get a real job or something. Perhaps by then we will see the next generation of the 20D.

Nice pics. I really like the third one. I bet it felt great to finally go digital and not worry about film (and costs!). I picked up a DSLR a couple months ago and haven't touched any of my other cameras since. :)

You're exactly right about the cause of the artifacting.

63 is OOF (out of focus - unless you wanted the paw sharp) ;)
64 & 66 would benefit greatly from a high f-stop

nice camera... i have the 10d for 2 yrs now... but my $150 digital elph could have taken them too. gotta learn the focus tricks on the dSLRs ;)

Nice pics.
Yellow Labs are my favorite - although Duncan looks a bit different than other Yellow Labs I've seen/owned.

focusing with SLRs is easier IMO, fixed lens digi cams take too long, that's why static shots come out really nice. but you have to pre plan the shot for moving objects.

Thanks for the comments.

My Elan IIe had eye-control focus which I loved. The 20D doesn't...I'm not sure why that is. It has nine focus points to the Elan's three, and you can manually pick the focus point, but that's hard to do with a moving subject. Maybe there are some tricks I could learn.

I usually like to shoot scenics on a tripod where I can stop the lens way down, these were all handheld.

It is quite a change going digital, I have to keep reminding myself I can shoot all I want (1 Gig card) and delete later. Thanks for the forum link, I'll check it out.

Lastly, Duncan is more of an "English" Lab (his papers show a few UK champions in the bloodline). They tend to be more stocky with shorter legs. That's fine with me, it keeps him from jumping the fence in my yard.

snap alot more photos. the 20D is a fast camera so you need to be in continuous shutter mode and snap alot (and delete alot).

also look into the custom functions. you can have the shutter button NOT focus, instead use the [*] or another button to AF (auto focus) or select AF point, hence easily reframe and shoot independant of focus. Also you can set the "reset focus" point to any area, which typically would be center. The RebelXT actually has the best "cycle thru all the focus points" imho especially over my 10D.

but the focus problem was probably exacerbated by shooting too wide open aperature (low F-stop) and hence the shallow depth of field. you need to use large DOFs with moving targets if you don't nail down the AF points :)
