First PSP Getaway details

For those that care

http://www.gamesasylum.com/showarticle.php?articleID=4566

Sony's Phil Harrison has revealed a few titbits about the PSP iteration of The Getaway. It's not a conversion or remake of the first Getaway - a la GTA: Liberty City Stories - but rather a spin-off currently known as Gangs of London. Harrison reckons that it'll push the PSP like no other game before it. As long as it turns out better than The Getaway: Black Monday then we'll be smitten.

In the spirit of the season and impending PSP NPD d00m threads, I actually thought the thread title said "First PSP Giveaway Details."

every2minutes ftw ;)

Excellent. :) I still think this series has some of the slickest direction/presentation I've seen, and the setting would lend itself incredibly well to an awesome game, I just wish they would completely overhaul the on-foot gameplay, and a lot of the design choices.

man..u dont have to compliment EVERYTHING on psp just cos it is on psp...

its the getaway. it will be ass. and it will be forgotten.

I couldn't even watch ads for the Console getaway games, why will this be good? I thought they were unplayable messes.

I wonder if the PSP will be able to cope with the upside down mouths that seem to plague the Getaway games on the PSP. Everyone looks like they are sucking on a wasp.

So we're looking forward to a getaway game now? Sequalitis is uncool with good games even>_> I'd rather just get gta then.

:lol Nintendo fanboys never cease to amaze me.
Yes because everyone who doesn't anticipate sequels to mediocre games is a Nintendo fanboy.

Sweet. :)

The Getaway was a pretty good game. IMO it had better missions than GTA3 plus a more interesting story.

On the downside, buggy controller, crap camera and no map of the city (the map that came with the game isn't much use, since you don't know where you are in the game)! :(

As opposed to sequels of Nintendo games? :/
Are you trying to say all Nintendo games are worse then the thrash the Getaway games were? :lol

Edit: I'm still trying to figure out why Sony is making their Soho studio do more getaway games when they make better soccer games.

yeah, but Elostyle and jj.... are known fanboys, so this is no surprise.

For the record, I really liked the first Getaway (see that other thread about games everybody hates) but avoid the sequel based on reiews and the fact that I usually like sequels less than the original.

If this is somehow different and improves on the original, I'll be interested. If it's a "Tomb Raider" style sequel, I'll pass.

How well did the getaway sell?

first one did 4 million copies, don't know about the second.

they need to fix up the fps, ps2 games were good but poor fps spoiled them.

good location, voice acting, story, gfx and controls - i want a inside car view in the ps3 version with support for steering wheels for virtual touring, and also a rock solid framerate. :D

I'm a known fanboy? :lol :lol :lol

That would explain my systems of choice: PS2/DS. Yes I'm as blind as day. :lol

I'll be more specific-- you're a knee-jerk anto PSP fanboy.
Ah yes, well I'm a bit more biased once I settle on a system I guess.

I wouldn't endorse mediocre games either way.

Edit: Wait what I did say that was so bad about the PSP? 1/2 of it's library are ports, the reasons I don't like it are personal, but their not really untrue either. Just because they are sports and racer games doesn't mean they don't count. The majority of the PSP's good line-up right now are racers.

Edit2: BTW, the thread Mouse and I are arguing about yet again is this one:

Busted I guess :lol most games I own still say "Sony" on the box somewhere... and no I don't own a stack of skyblazer copies.

Nah but seriously, getaway on ps2 had tremendous hype and was just _such_ a huge disappointment once it was actually released that I have to scratch my head when people anticipate the sequel/spinoff and take the developers claims seriously.

You apparently like the original so that makes it ok then I guess. I assumed it was equally unliked here.

yadda yadda

EDIT: Oh my that thread jj linked was horrid. I think I understood DaCoco's "w\" as "with" and he meant "without" or something and it went downhill from there.

IMO, if they can improve/revamp the Getaway engine (Character Controls, Faster Pace, Camera, etc..), than this game might be decent.

The first Getaway was cool until the house security system level. I kept checking my calendar to see if it wasn't 1994... What an old-school type of level for a game that was far, far away from old-school.

Never played the 2nd getaway, but the first one rocked hard. Alot of action, good story, I really liked that game. Not sure how it will transfer over to the PSP though.

I've only played the first Getaway, and I liked the direction/presentation. The gameplay though was hit and miss. Some of the driving missions/segments were great, the on-the-foot stuff was pretty poor.

I have high hopes for this PSP version, but I'm not holding my breath.

The Getaway 1 was awesome. Haven't played part 2 yet.

It wasn't nearly as good as the original, although I guess that had to do with Brendan McNamara forming Team Bondi after The Getaway. They're working on LA Noire for the PS3.

What was wrong with the second one? Buggy? Bland missions?

It just felt broken compared to the first one, and the story and characters weren't nearly as interesting even though they voice acting was just as high quality as the original. I stopped playing early on (after the mission in the scrap yard) so it could've got better. But going by other impressions, I don't think it did.

I actually enjoyed the second one a whole lot more. The first one turned me off pretty early on, oddly enough, and I never wanted to play it again. The driving mechanics were less responsive in the original and the cops were FAR too fierce. Along with that, the cars were extremely fragile. This always resulted in hopping from car to car while trying to avoid death in a city I'm unfamiliar with. The on-foot, then, was very slow paced and unresponsive.

The sequel worked oh so much better. The driving mechanics were simply more fun to use, the AI was toned down to a more realistic level, and you now had a map system. The on-foot saw the addition of an "instant kill" like move (kinda like an over-powered melee system or something). When you played as Mitch, however, he would literally "arrest" them...which looked stupid. Even in that case, I felt that this actually allowed the on foot gameplay to become enjoyable. You'd dodge shots and avoid death while trying to chain enemies deaths together. It was completely unrealistic in the worst way, but it actually made for an enjoyable goal in these sections. The addition of a superior camera system, generally more responsive controls, and faster healing (along with med-packs) simply made it a lot more fun.

I also found the story to be more enjoyable overall as it was based much more heavily on things happening around you and switched between the characters more often. I really found the story to be a lot more engaging and it kept me playing to the end.

The presentation didn't feel as solid, I must admit, but the experience was actually FUN for some reason...even if the game could be considered kinda broken (both were, really).

I enjoyed the sequel, but that enjoyment could be chalked up along with games like Trespasser. It's not a good game, but if you can get into it (for any reason) there is a lot of fun to be had.
