First Reactions To Ant-Man

man those after-credits spoilers sound like the same old shit. i am wary of reviews that end with "do not miss the after credits scene". since that stuff is strictly for the people who are completely enthralled by the universe, when the movies themselves are feeling like teasers for the future movies (age of ultron) these after credits scenes are getting redundant. hell imo iron man 3 has the best one tbh. i wanna hear impressions from people who don't really care for these movies. or think that cap 2 and gotg > the rest.

movie itself is sounding like it might be fun though. honestly even a film with only a vestige of wright's work is still guaranteed to be better than most of marvel studios' movies imo. more of his kind of work is what the genre needs.

edit: man i dunno what I'm even complaining about, this shit aint for me.

My sister doesn't go to the movies at all. Last time she entered a theater was probably 15 years ago

She never watched a single super hero movie. Not even the first spiderman

Already got her convinced to watch this one with me. I hope it's good otherwise it will be another 15 years of her avoiding movies

(I remember the last time we went to the movies! It was "land of the dead". So it wasn't 15 years, only 10)

I don't see what the problem is with post-credit scenes teasing future movies. It's been that way since the very beginning.

They run after the movie is over, no one is being forced to sit through them and they're just harmless fanservice. It's when the setup takes too much focus away from the main story beats (Iron Man 2, Age of Ultron) where the teasing becomes overzealous.

Maybe you should give her a test drive with X-Men: First Class, Guardians of the Galaxy or Captain America: The Winter Soldier depending on her tastes (although that last one might require prior knowledge :p). If you want to start her with an origin story, I think Thor had the best one in phase one. I wouldn't recommend gambling with Ant-Man. It could suck. :p

Saw the world premiere yesterday. Here's some bullet points on my end. No Spoilers.

- More enjoyable than Age of Ultron. It's smaller in scale/scope and felt way more focused, which helped it out a lot. Didn't feel bogged down by the MCU, which is what I felt about Ultron.
- The comparisons to Ocean Eleven aren't entirely accurate. It's definitely a heist/burgling movie, but doesn't really have the Ocean's swag/feel. At the same time that's not a bad thing.
- The comedy is very Rudd/Apatow feel. Conversational, improv. The jokes land, unlike Age of Ultron's. I thought it overall was one of the funniest Marvel movies. Very lighthearted but still had pretty solid "human" moments. The motivations are clear.
- Not really any annoying/throwaway characters.
- The MCU tie ins don't feel ham-fisted. It feels very organic and it's not overdone at all.
- There is one sequence/MCU tie-in that you really don't want spoiled. It was great not having any idea it was going to happen. It was pretty important in the movie too.
- The two credits scenes were really cool. Enjoyed them both immensely and they were better than AoU's.
- Michael Douglas is in the movie way more than I expected. It's more of an ensemble movie than I thought it would be.
- Hope Van Dyne was a pretty good character overall. She was essentially the anti-Jane Foster (Strong, seemed to care about her role, tough, extremely capable.) She's most comparable to a Peggy Carter in terms of role and characteristics.

I'm not going to give a score, but I'll put it into a MCU rank list:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The Avengers
Iron Man
Guardians of the Galaxy
Ant-Man
Captain America
Thor
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Iron Man 3
Thor: The Dark World
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2

If anyone has any other questions, let me know and I'll try to answer. PM me if you want spoilers.

Thanks. I can't wait to see this

I forgot one thing:

The action sequences were pretty fresh with the shrinking. It was nice not to have a superhero that's just really strong and unbeatable again. The use of ants overall was well done. They were smart to make it a heist movie with the tools Ant-Man has at his disposal.

Thanks for the write-up. My girlfriend wants to see it but also hasn't seen any MCU movie since Iron Man (which I think she has mostly forgotten anyway). Is it safe to say she can walk into this without any prior knowledge about anything MCU and understand it just fine?

She should be fine. Does she know what an Avenger is? That's essentially all she needs to know. That it's a superhero team with multiple members.

.

So you grouped it with the worst movies in the series. That's not exactly a positive sign.

hype is officially through the roof, looks like this one turned out A+++

CAN'T WAIT

I'm glad my minimal hype policy for this movie seems to be working out. I'm starting to get pretty stoked.

Also lol Gonzalez. It's always the same clowns.

That's because you are man of refined palate.

I did to. They are not incredible movies, but the second one was a lot more fun that the first one fo sho.

I think it's better than the sum of its parts but what I find most irritating about it is that it's just a good movie with shadows of a great one. Marvel hasn't done an extended cut before but I hope they change their mind for AoU considering how many people have been asking for it.

Stop getting hyped fools. That's the recipe for disaster. I went in only watching the major trailers.

I've read a few other things about the movie from other boards. Sounds promising, I'll probably end up seeing it if a friend asks me to. It doesn't sound so great that I just have to see it like GoTG was.

Fuck if you think I hate those movies you need to hear my cinematographer friends talk about them.

Oh I can imagine ;-)

I've had the displeasure of spending a significant amount of time with film school students. I learned pretty quickly not to talk to them about movies...ever. I'm sure the obnoxious behavior I witnessed isn't universal among people in the industry, and most of them likely grow out of it with time, but man...talk about sucking the joy out of something beloved.

Also... I'm starting to see what people mean with the Avengers cinematography.

It's bad. It has to be Joss's fault too. There is no way Seamus McGarvey would shoot like that.
