First Reactions To Ant-Man

- More enjoyable than Age of Ultron. It's smaller in scale/scope and felt way more focused, which helped it out a lot. Didn't feel bogged down by the MCU, which is what I felt about Ultron.
- The comparisons to Ocean Eleven aren't entirely accurate. It's definitely a heist/burgling movie, but doesn't really have the Ocean's swag/feel. At the same time that's not a bad thing.
- The comedy is very Rudd/Apatow feel. Conversational, improv. The jokes land, unlike Age of Ultron's. I thought it overall was one of the funniest Marvel movies. Very lighthearted but still had pretty solid "human" moments. The motivations are clear.
- Not really any annoying/throwaway characters.
- The MCU tie ins don't feel ham-fisted. It feels very organic and it's not overdone at all.
- There is one sequence/MCU tie-in that you really don't want spoiled. It was great not having any idea it was going to happen. It was pretty important in the movie too.
- The two credits scenes were really cool. Enjoyed them both immensely and they were better than AoU's.
- Michael Douglas is in the movie way more than I expected. It's more of an ensemble movie than I thought it would be.
- Hope Van Dyne was a pretty good character overall. She was essentially the anti-Jane Foster (Strong, seemed to care about her role, tough, extremely capable.) She's most comparable to a Peggy Carter in terms of role and characteristics.

I'm not going to give a score, but I'll put it into a MCU rank list:

I've had the displeasure of spending a significant amount of time with film school students. I learned pretty quickly not to talk to them about movies...ever. I'm sure the obnoxious behavior I witnessed isn't universal among people in the industry, and most of them likely grow out of it with time, but man...talk about sucking the joy out of something beloved.

Yeah my brother in law is in the industry, and it's nearly impossible to watch anything with him because he complains about everything. If there's one thing in the show/movie that bothers him-that's all he talks about.

Dr Strange
and my mind is exploding with what that sequence might be

Nice ranking list. I would shuffle things a bit, but pretty close.

My question is... How is the villain?
No spoilers needed, just is it good or bad?

Except for Loki in the original avengers , they have been terrible. Even Guardians while generally great suffers from a meh villain.

My general issue with them is that they tend to be super formulaic. Superhero makes cool technology. Bad guy steals same technology for evil. Boring and makes superhero less unique and less special.

Iron man, Iron man 2, Hulk, Cap1, Cap2 all suffer from this and it seemed from the trailers it might be similar for Antman.

The best villains in movies are always orthogonal in some way to the hero. Lex Luthor, The Joker, Loki,
Mr. Glass
, King Pin, etc.

I'd say Cross is about as good as Jeff Bridges was. Definitely better than Ronan and the lower tier one note villains, but he's no Loki or Winter Soldier. At least he has some personality and you can understand his motivation other than "I WANT TO DESTROY EVERYTHING".

Marvel was smart with the whole everythings connected so you HAVE TO watch the shows and the movies or youll be confused
 
I still can't believe we live in a universe where Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man movies are a thing.
I really want to see this.

The good thing about this movie was that you didn't really HAVE TO watch everything. It's very standalone other than acknowledging that the Avengers exist.

Makes sense considering what I heard about Wright's draft. It sounds like it remained intact as far as individuality is concerned and Marvel just sprinkled a light topping of MCU crumbs onto it

That is disappointing to hear.

Jeff Bridges was interesting but then he just jumps in a suit with the same tech to fight Iron Man. I really like Iron Man, but that last fight was the worst part of the movie to me.

Yeah, Cross' motivations and reasons for being bad are better depicted in Ant-Man, but I'd say overall, yeah they're about the same level of quality. Not amazing but not horrible like Ronan or the Dark Elf dude.

The final fight sequences are better than Iron Man. It doesn't falter the way that Act 3 of Iron Man does, but at the same time it doesn't really reach the highs of Act 1/2 of Iron Man.

How can I tell what is act 1, 2 and 3 in a movie?

Is it just like start, middle and end of a movie?

Can you PM the post credits scenes and the MCU related scenes? I actually don't mind spoilers when it comes to MCU movies.

Basically. Most western entertainment fits the dramatic structure set out by classical Greek plays. What happens in certain acts is a more or less archetypal and culturally specific thing.

More or less. Once you learn to spot it, it becomes really clear where the demarcations are. It's especially easy with Iron Man because each act neatly corresponds with each of Tony's suits. :lol

Of course not. Dude, I won't even direct commercials, which I've been offered millions of dollars to do. As anyone who follows me here knows, I've been to almost every Marvel premiere and I have not praised all of the films.

There's apparently
some sort of Microverse sequence near the end that tangentially relates to the other dimensions to be featured in Doctor Strange.

At least, that's what I've inferred.

For my money, the crazier the better. These movies can't get weird enough for me.
 
Looks like the Marvel train ain't hitting the breaks with Ant-Man either, even though it was against quite a lot of odds.
