Just wanted to put this out there.
Honestly as soon as it cuts outside you know exactly what he's gonna say but it's still pretty damn funny.
Man, that's one of the least scathing Honest Trailers I've ever seen! The things they complained about were Math, Science, and that "Science-Fact makes Science-Fiction boring." All great things for this kind of movie! They also correctly identified the most fictiony part of the entire book/movie: A popular and well-funded NASA! What I've been saying since reading the book!! Yeah!!!

I think they tend to be like that when the movie is actually pretty decent.
The part about Mark Watney being skilled at just about everything is entirely believable as well. It's discussed in the book, but in reality, astronauts get an incredible amount of training in a variety of different areas.

Yeah, they all have to have training in basic emergency first aid procedures, for example.
This is an old post, but to me it was more like Cast Away on Mars minus all the tension and drama.
Astronauts are generally the most intelligent people out there, especially designated research crew members. It's easy to believe when you consider that there are hundreds of thousands of candidates to fill a couple dozen positions.

Just saw it with my dad and that's what we talked about. With an astronaut they have to be over cross trained so I had no problem with that. Easily one of my favorite movies in a while. I liked that intelligence was rewarded and right up front the whole way. Very inspiring movie and honestly I hope it works like a NASA ad for younger people. I'm going to make sure my nephew sees it soon for that very reason. Damn fine film.

I thought that the book was dismal - just some terrible writing, and absolutely zero characterisation for anybody outside Watney (whose only real sense of character is "textbook with swearing"). I just watched the film and thought it was really good for the most part, funny and charming enough to make the dry bits work beautifully. So, yeah.

I both finished reading the book last night, and then immediately watched the film after and I'm intrigued by this. What you describe as the ending of the book certainly didn't happen in the version that I read. Did Weir re-release the book or something?
Anyway, I liked The Martian a lot. I do think on one hand that the book has just too many situations where things go wrong and I started to become disenfranchised to a lot of it after a point. But film Watney, therefore by comparison, just seemed to have a far easier ride in comparison to book Watney. Still, great to see Ridley with a win.
