Jet Li had a 2 year hiatus. Here is the teaser, introducing some characters

"Warning", its very over the top

Synopsis, which might confuse you even further

A long time ago, a determined King Zhou, supported by his concubine Daji, sets his mind on conquering the Middle Kingdom. After years of slaughter, the unyielding Adept tribes have been eliminated in succession. Jiang and General Ji from Qishan are King Zhou’s longstanding opponents. Under a divinatory sign, Jiang discovers that the Sword of Light can reverse the adversity.

General Ji has reservations over the unruly nature of the weapon, but Jiang believes that hope lies in risks. He then makes a shrewd scheme of assigning the quest for the Sword to several nobodies—Ji Lei, Nezha, and Er Lang Shen.

Each born with strange Adept powers, the team is confronted with their own respective fears that threaten to endanger the quest. On their risky journey for the Sword, the first challenge is to overcome their fears.

I didn't expect Jet Li to be playing Chinese white-bearded old wise man archetype. I had to look for a minute to find where's Jet Li in the poster

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Some mighty impressive head dresses going on in that poster. Also the six armed child lol

I'm not sure why chinese movie CG still looks so bad most of the time.

The movie could be good, though. Well-done fantasy mythical being stuff would be cool.

I'm usually wary of special effects driven Chinese epics, though the quality of these productions has been improving lately (Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal was the last one I watched, I think... sorta lousy but some of the CGI work was actually decent). Hopefully it's better than Jet Li's previous fantasy outing (The Sorcerer and the White Snake, also lousy and loaded with bad CGI).

At any rate, the bar for 2016 has been set pretty low. (Or amazingly high, I can't tell.)

Was that Monkey King movie that came out this year any good? I skipped it.

What in the fuck is that thing at the bottom left?

Love how over-the-top the costumes are.

Wong Jing filmed a bit of KFCM2 but pulled the plug after the first one bombed. The story is based on a Chinese novel called Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre, which was also adapted into a few TV series and a 2 part film from Shaw Bros. There's also a couple of RPG games but I think they're in Chinese only.

I assume it's because the production schedules for Chinese movies are a lot quicker than American movies, not to mention the budgets tend to be quite a bit smaller. Kind of ironic though since most big Hollywood productions use Chinese companies to do the CGI effects.

But its also because western English movies are popular world wide so bigger audience to sell to, while here in America no body cares about movies not in English, so their only audience will be their country and surround countries that understand the language.

I love ignorant comments like this LMFAO.

There have been dozens of movies and tv shows based on this Chinese mythology for decades.

I wasn't talking about the source material, I was talking about the shitty CG production quality with shiny golden Gods fighting. I've watched thousands of Chinese myth movies and none of them has this much gold on them.

And I was being slightly sarcastic as Chinese movies like this are always cheesy garbage with terrible acting, so it's really Gods of Egypt copying China.

I think I saw the character arts for this a while back, or I might just be misremembering.

Yep I did, found them. I remember thinking that everybody looked whack. Rather, Louis Koo looked the weirdest I have ever seen him.

Some of the designs are pretty cool though.

Don't know how they will look in practice/CGI.

little surprised, didn't know the Chinese had their own mythology of gods. First time I hear about this.
As far as I know, the Chinese have a TON of mythological stuff. Both heaven and hell and so on. Probably as big as Norse mythology.

So you just completely contradicted what you wrote in your original post.

Shrug.

There's also a couple of RPG games but I think they're in Chinese only.

There's also a couple Playstation RPGs from KOEI. I played #2 and it's dog shit.

Didn't even know.

Dragon Ball is a parody of the Journey To The West, revolving around the mythological figure Monkey King. Son Goku is the monkey king.

Jet Li played the monkey king in the american/ chinese action film The Forbidden Kingdom.
