First Xbox 360 casualty

No they are two people that have or heard of a dead 360. And despite EGM's goal, this does not make a trend.

What?! That's TWO people who have allegedly had 360's fail. Based on this evidence, I am no longer going to be purchasing an Xbox 360, and I will suggest to my friends that they do the same. This is a disaster. MS has really screwed up this time. I can't believe they would let those units out with such crappy manufacturing tolerances. I mean, this is just inexcusable. If there are two dead systems already, by this rate, at least 57% of the launch units will be faulty.

90 days... Pretty standard warranty.
Come on now if Nintendo can get away with Year long warranties then Got-Dammit so can Microsoft. Short ass warranties are never a good thing and 3 months is a short ass warranty for a console that is supposed to last 4-5 years.

Hey at least my X360 is working just fine!... don't want to risk overheating so playing some HEXIC HD baby! jk'ing, CoD2 has got my hooked!

Not that I don't agree. 90 days is standard though. And if they gave any longer Best Buy and Circuit City won't be able to gouge their customers with extended warranties.

Jesus Christ man, cause I liked the trailers, but not enough to go to the movies and see it so I waited for the DVD. Get off my back already, SHIT!!!!!! I get it, you guys don't like Stealth. I thought it was an ok movie. Jessica Beals does look nice and has a mighty righteous ass and all, but none of this has anything to do with my Xbox 360 overheating on me. Lets focus on what's really important, and that's the 360 not my taste, questionable or not, in movies.
Maybe your overheating is cosmic justice because of your Stealth purchase. Electricity zaps the A.I. in the plane making it go crazy, electricity zaps your 360 making it overheat and go crazy. THROW STEALTH AWAY NOW, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

Ok as long as you agree that its pretty jacked up especially for a gaming console. This is one of the areas where i was sure MS would improve but it's too soon to call their customer service for the 360 crap.

Isnt the PSP 1 year as well?

I dont have a PSP, but I heard about this and thought it was an excellent move.

All Nintendo consoles are 1 year.

My only freeze was when I was BC'ing Fable and went to the demo's section. I guess the emulator wasn't designed for going in there.

Yeah, 1 year. Unless you have dead pixels. Then the warranty is 0 days.

Just curious has anyone here experienced any lockups? if so how did it happen?

I think mine is going to crash, when playing Kameo, the sound becomes all glitched, like you'll hear a sound effect of me shooting a boulder and it will keep repeating itself over and over and over, until I switch areas or just stops. it's the worst when you follow the shadow trolls and those bats make the squeek it keeps repeating also glitching the sound. It also stutters a lot in the cut scene when you first fall into the well. Anyone else get this?

You'd think they'd want to put the ones going out a little early to contest winners through a couple extra rounds of QA, just to make sure all of those pre-launch impressions are as positive as possible.

Shit, now you're like the 3rd or 4th person here who has gotten glitches or freezes in their games ;_;

I've never bought an extended warranty and I've never had a console or portable die. The X360 better not be the first :(

I heard a nasty rumor that the failure rate is quite high, far higher then any other console to date.
I put no faith in it till I saw this thread, and the muliple reports.

Considering that to have a 360 at this point, you had to win the contest(s) and to see several failures already... perhaps just a freak statistic, but wow, things could get very interesting. I'm buying a PRP that's for sure.

Yeah I heard that rumor too!

Is the PRP even worth anything if the stores are going to have any replacement systems to give you for a few months?

I started that rumor after talking on IRC with a janitor who works at a Xbox360 manufacturing plant

Wow, that rumor spread quick :lol

I remember when I got my launch Saturn in may 95 I came home and the fucker wouldn't load any games... it kept telling me "disc not suitable for system" oh I was sooo pissed and disappointed. I returned it the next day and that Saturn still works to this day! :D

lol @ you guys when it comes to warranty. In Sweden we have a 2 year warranty for factory made faults by law. That is, if the fault is due to something faulty in the construction, you allways get a fix or a new device within 2 years. Alot of people don't know this though, and get persuaded to buy expensive warranties from the vendors..

Errgh. I don't want to hear about Thompson drives or overheating power adaptors or 0.01% failure rates!! >:(|

Good luck, dude!

Funny how the name "Thompson" really means the sign of a videogame apocalypse. :lol

If you guys really think that the console is going to work flawlessly, the good news is that it will....

...for the first 90 days.

Be wary though, the console generates an immense amount of heat - in our demo kiosk the metal plate was consistently heated by the console. Warm enough to touch.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of problems with the first models.

Keep it in a ventilated area and away from things that might catch fire.

Manufacturers put a 90 day warranty just to cover their ass so they can cash in on repairs or replacement units.

i can't confirm this as i don't have one, but i also heard that with the 'PSTwo' (smaller PS2) Sony bumped their warranty up to 1 year also... so MS is the'odd man out' so to speak...

PSTwo does come with a 1 year warranty.

This was after Sony reaped immense profits from repairs and replacements.

Abit off topic but I have to ask anyway-does WalMart sell service protection plans?

Dating back to the Saturn I have had every console die on me each generation, save for Nintendo consoles. Being an early adopter sucks,I want a service plan this time around.

A 90 day warranty is poor to say the least. Even Sony offers a 1 year warranty for PS2 I think.

I guess the lesson learned is that we should all avoid Xbox 360.

I've never had a console die on me dating back to the 2600 but I did have to blow on a few NES cartridges and turn a ps2 upside down to get it to work.

So Microsoft are now the only ones pimping that 90day warranty BS? Come on MS show some faith in your product. At least give us poor bastards 6 months!

Here in Europe the Xbox had a 1 year warranty if i recall correctly. Actually, i think that right now, everything electronics related sold at retail in Europe has to give the costumer a 2 year warranty. I don't know how consoles fit into that exactly though....

Actually it was two years for the first Xbox, but not from the start. They added a year at some point. The warranties that companies provide are usually pretty useless, at least in Finland (and Sweden it seems), because consumer rights are so good over here. But they do make things easier.

I don't think it's fair to consider 90 days standard. 90 days is asshat. 1 year is fair.

At least when it comes to consumer electronics.

Every digital camera I've ever purchased had a 1 year warranty.
Every Nintendo console.
Every iPod.
PSP (and I believe PS2, as well).

The only things that I can think of that I purchased with 90 day warranties were my Rio Karma (I went through three of them, too, before switching it over to an iPod--thank god for Best Buy warranties) and an Xbox (of which I've had two fail).

Manufacturers put a 90 day warranty just to cover their ass so they can cash in on repairs or replacement units.

And who's the most willing to splurge on replacement consoles, or pay Best Buy to for them?

That's right, hardcore early adopter gamers.

If there is a problem that's not too serious (and I certainly don't know that overheating is that big a problem in this case), Microsoft can definitely get away with not fixing it for a few months.

I'm glad I don't live in a country with such crummy consumer protection laws. Over here they're required to give you 12 months' manufacturer's warranty.

Well, it isn't quite like we're required to buy the device. If we don't like the warranty, we can always bitch about it and not buy the fucking thing. That's capitalism, after all.

But we're far more likely to just buy it, since we're all fools hopelessly addicted to--in this instance--gaming.

That is a bad PR for MS if the story is true...
I will be one of the earlier adopters. Dec 2nd. hope that xbox360 will working as normal and not freezing or any other errors.
Like the one of the members from this Forum: Joe with his locked up xbox360.

MS should fix this problem as soon as possible if there really is

oh man, we just came back from EB, man some asian loser there bought the X360 + Kameo & PIAB stuff for 870$CAD! :lol EB offered us oh 350$ for the console + 25$ for Kameo... It seems EB is really pushing the warrenty hard, even before the console is released.

Employee: "Hey Hey dude, you want a warrenty on your pre-order? you know first gen consoles should never be bought without a warrenty it's just common sense, dude "
Me: Buddy the console isn't even out yet... for the general public.
Employee: "It's only another 75$ ontop of your pre order and you're safe for another year, we'll even replace it if it's overheating & stuff. You bring it in, we replace it"
Me: How many consoles are you recieving tomorrow?
Obese Employee: 2 premiums 4 cores.
Me: For how many pre-orders?
Obese Employee: 89 or so.
Me: So if I buy my console and it craps out today and I bring it in tomorrow you'll be replace it?
Obese Employee: Well no... we have to wait for the pre-orders to be filled first then wait for the shipment after that..
Me: And how long will that take?
Employee: Common dude! it's only 75$ more and you're protected man.
Me *turns around leaves store*
Employee: Dude??

I've seen the kiosk unit at local EB do just that. The red LEDs were flashing around the power button and console seemed dead. I thought, "Well, that's about it for this demo unit", but 30 minutes later I was passing by there and I saw some kids playing on it.

If your unit is doing that, whatever the problem is, there's apparently a way to make it work again so maybe not all is lost. If it overheats just put it in a completely open space somewhere. You'll at least be able to play it untill the time you decide you want to exchange it.
