I'm trying to be creative when it comes to protecting my shins from not getting cut up when deadlifting. I've heard people cutting up a gallon jug and taping them around their shins. any other simple solutions?

I wear long sleeve pants instead of shorts on deadlift day. Simplest solution I could come up with.Jason's Ultimatum said:I'm trying to be creative when it comes to protecting my shins from not getting cut up when deadlifting. I think rippetoe says that you should be scraping the bar against your shins on the way up. I know I had a scab on shin for a while and it would break open when dead lifting.Jason's Ultimatum said:I was always told by powerlifters at my gym to keep the bar against my shins and bring it up while grazing my legs at the top.

lol I do this in my home gym. keeps the blood pumping, muscles loose, and kills time between sets. problem?Alienshogun said:Add another one to the Dbag list.
Guys who do "fighting moves" infront of the mirror after/inbetween sets.
Where the fuck do these idiots come from?
Jason's Ultimatum said:There's a latin guy from South America who's in his early 40s. He's one of the lead instructors at some MMA gym. He does a lot of crazy exercises that I've never seen before, like for example he gets on the floor into a pushup position, but spreads his legs out and keeps his butt up in the air. He's stationary but spins around using his hands only to turn. Then he quickly gets up, keeps his arms flat down against his sides, and does like a punching motion. I'm sure it's something that's practical for MMA, but anway he's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He likes to do the punch when running in baby steps, but that's only because he does a lot of conditioning exercises. He's not one of those whife-beater douchebags with the gel in his hair and does punching motions in front of the mirror.

Petrie said:I find myself getting really into my music in between sets at the gym, like I'll start drumming in the air to a part I really like, without even realizing I'm doing it. I don't think this qualifies as anything but silly though.

ezrarh said:I admit, I do this sometimes. Well, mainly just practice my punch/elbowing form on the rack inbetween squats or whatever. It's random when I do it so a lot of the time it's when I'm bored in between sets. Thankfully the gym here has a heavy bag for punching/kicking so I look less like a douche if I do it on the heavy bag?

I think most of us get annoyed with other people from time to time, but don't let it bother you so much. And when I say "bother you so much" I'm only going by the frequency of your posts about the subject.
edit:
There are many times in life I "RAGE" (work, which unfortunately I have to do) but going to the gym is something I love to do, so it would take something monumental to happen at the gym to get me even the least bit slightly annoyed.
Lifting weights is my fun time, don't let it get to you.
cuevas said:Yeah I learned just to ignore pretty much everything that goes on when I workout. I notice things but I don't think about it. I don't even listen to music or anything, I just don't care.
Gotta start somewhere?Alienshogun said:The little cunt only had a 10 and a 5 lb plat on each side too.
Alienshogun said:Also, annoyed me today. Some jackhole took up one of the barbells to do curls so I had to highjack the one out of the power cage to do my deadlifts.

I recommend finding a super friend to hold your legs while you walk/stand on your hands. I can hold myself up for few seconds after the initial handstand pushup from the ground, but I need a friend if I want to work on staying up longer.MrOogieBoogie said:Anyone know any good videos or write-ups for perfecting a handstand? I've been working on it for a while now but I still can't balance myself for very long. I can get into position without wall assistance, but like I said, I need some tips.
Even though my regular handstands suck, I tried doing one on a pull-up bar for the first time today. Of course, the biggest hurdle was the initial fear, but once I got over that I was throwing my legs up, but just as soon coming down. Wasn't worried about losing my grip as I had a good one, but again, I feel that if I can perfect a neutral handstand it will improve my bar handstands.
Petrie said:Seriously. He pays for his membership, and has just as much right to use the equipment as you do. He wasn't using it wrong. You sound like an ass.
Might want to re-read Alienshogun's post. Apparently the guy was using the spare barbell to do curls so Alienshogun had to get the bar from the power rack to do his deadlifts. He wasn't using the rack for curls, I don't think.X-Frame said:Actually, he was using it wrong.
Occupying a power rack, something that is usually extremely rare in a gym, to do barbell curls with very low amounts of weight should be against gym rules.
There's tons of other ways for a kid to do biceps work, but only 1-2 racks where someone can safely do large, complex movements.
Of course, if he had no idea that he was denying someone else the power rack because nobody told him or there were no signs, not enforced, etc then you can't blame him. Unless he was someone who's been lifting for a long time but is just ignorant or doesn't care.

Petrie said:Yeah, re-read the post. The kid wasn't using the power rack, he simply took a barbell and was using it for curls, but apparently not with enough weight for the poster to think he deserved to be using that equipment. Alienshogun wasn't even using the power rack himself if you read the post, he was doing deadlifts and took a barbell from the power rack in order to do so. He is totally wrong, and an ass. That guy has just as much right to use that equipment, frankly he could have been curling just the bar and still wouldn't have been doing a damn thing wrong.
Alienshogun said:He's a twat and he WAS using it wrong.
Petrie said:You may not have LIKED what he was doing, but he was not using it wrong, and unless your gym has rules against it, or you SAID something since he likely had no clue this was bad form, you're the douche, not him.
Also, I know the bars at my gym are 45 lbs, and if this was my gym, he would have been curling 75lbs,. I've never seen a 75lb barbell anywhere I've been, so again, he was well within his rights to use what he was, especially if this was the case.
cuevas said:Lol shogun you gotta stop judging people and just do your workout. You get way too heated about dumb shit.
Alienshogun said:Then your gym is not my gym, I know it's a shock that not all gyms are the same.
In my gym there are preweighted barbells with straight and bent grips both go from 30lbs to 110.
This is a power cage/rack.Gvaz said:Oh is the power rack that square thing with the barbell attached that you can move all around?
That thing's cool, I was using that for barbell squats. I wish there was like a billion of them.
Petrie said:So does my gym, but they go 30, 40, 50, etc, no 5's in there, so if he needed to do 75 he wasn't hurting anything.
And you're assuming far too much knowledge for him to have. If you didn't say anything, you've no right to bitch. End of story.
Draft said:Of all the gym shit that people get heated over, I feel like curls in the rack is a fairly valid one.
Most gyms are built for curls. The dumbbell collection is extensive. EZ Curl bars are abundant. Curls can be done anywhere.
The squat is not as fortunate. Many gyms don't even have racks. The ones that do usually have no more than a couple. That's two spots in the entire gym that can handle squatting. How annoying when it's squat day and those two spots are taken up by someone curling (could be doing that literally 30 other places) or someone shrugging (I'm less upset about this one. Power shrugs do require a cage.)
I can't believe there's gyms without an abundance of barbells. I'd find myself a better gym.Alienshogun said:I personally wish more gyms (mine in particular) had "spare" barbells. I feel bad enough having to take a barbell to do deadlifts, but there is literally no other way to do it.
There's absolutely no excuse to be using them for curls though.

Mine does. 5 or 6 are stuck in this odd little stand by the squat racks. It looks like a baseball plate with 5 steel cups that that hold the bars upright.Alienshogun said:It's a Golds Gym, and the best gym in the area.
Does your gym have 45 lb barbells not on equipment, just sitting around for anyone to use?

Yeah it does. There's usually 3 or 4 just over by the thing for preacher curls, a couple stuck around for people to use for weird shrug type stuff. There's probably an extra 6 or 7 of them in total, though a couple of those may be the ones with the spots for your hands. Never paid enough attention.Alienshogun said:It's a Golds Gym, and the best gym in the area.

deadbeef said:Yep, mine has 2 extra. Also a smaller (25 lb. ?) bar as well.
Probably couldn't hurt to at least give the input/feedback. Worst they can do is say no.Alienshogun said:Wonder why mine doesn't.
I wonder if the management would be receptive to one of their customers requesting more barbells.
Petrie said:Probably couldn't hurt to at least give the input/feedback. Worst they can do is say no.
There's enough space by the benches that if they aren't full I just do mine there. People can walk around if they need to. I really can't imagine going to a gym with such limited space though. That's unfortunate.Alienshogun said:Yeah, I'll say something tomorrow. I really don't like taking barbells from equipment racks.
That said, there's hardly any floor space for deadlifts there without being in anyone's way either.
Perhaps that's why.
When I do mine it's either in front of a squat rack, or like yesterday infront of a weight rack.
Anywhere else would be blocking people working out, or foot traffic.
Lucky bastard! There was a single gym with a lifting platform in my area, but the staff trying to sell me the membership was shady as hell. Felt like I was buying a used car from Honest Mike. Consequently I went with the runner-up that crammed a power rack and a squat rack together in the back corner, but thankfully had cheap membership terms.deadbeef said:My gym has a lifting platform for deadlifts - pretty nice.
