For Shenmue Fans!!!

I want next-gen Shenmue. Starting with a remake of I and II bundled in one package.

Shenmue's the sort of game that's made for looking as pretty as possible.

Man I miss Shenmue. I don't know why but part 2 was like a religious experience for me. I felt like I understood Yu Suzuki and what he was trying to do. And not one person I know gave it a chance; it makes me sad. He is how old and it was like I was playing a childs mind, a dream, or vision. I played it 26 hours straight...I don't know what came over me, the first one was neat but it had so many problems, but he fixed it in 2.

Yeah, S2 was something special. I still hold out hope some day that the series will continue, but I'm not holding my breath :|... and that Chinese online thingy doesn't count.

That video is really impressive, but I'm glad the project got shifted to Dreamcast. For as good as those 32-bit Saturn graphics are, most of the atmospheric qualities of the game would have been lost.. like when walking through the forest in Disc 4 of Shenmue II, for example.

PS: World-renowned Shenmue-hater, DiscoStu, stay out of this thread!!!!

God knows how much money they spent on this. Most of it thrown in the trash can. Sega *rolleyes*

Was going to start a thread but I may as well shove it in here..

I was one of those guys that never bought a Saturn or Dreamcast but desperately wanted to due to just a few random games. Saturn - Virtua Fighter 2 and Panzer Dragoon Saga. DC - Skies of Arcadia, Soul Calibur and Shenmue.

Anyway I said to a friend a few months ago that I don't think I'd ever get a chance to play Shenmue because realistically I couldn't be bothered to track down a workable DC and grab both Shenmue I & II for PAL. So long story short, found Shenmue II for Xbox retailing at around $10-15 US and I thought what the heck.. they had that movie of Shenmue so..

God I missed out on a good game. 1st half of Shenmue II is awesome, bit repititive but I only just got into Kowloon and have to track that woman down with the bird. And what the hell is it with the dreadful voice acting? (again) :lol

Heh...Kowloon is the best part. This thread is making me want to replay Shenmue II...such a great game for those that "get it." If they do finally make a Shenmue 3, my only advice to Yu Suzuki is better voice actors!!!!

BTW, (for later in the game) when she sings, don't interupt her. The song is beautiful and worth listening to.

I agree. I mean, I love the original though, and never thought years later 2 would be even better.. But it certified just how amazing a vision these games are and it's the saddest thing in gaming that they were never successful. I really hope they come out with III next gen :(

You know what's really messed up? Filter, the G4 "top 10" show, listed Shen Mue as tied for first place with another game (forget which one) for WORST GAME OF ALL TIME. (The other game won the face off)

I couldn't believe that they were putting Shen Mue on a "worst games ever" list, never mind that they thought games like MORTAL KOMBAT ADVANCE (loved how they showed footage of MK Deadly Alliance...great research job guys!) were BETTER. :/

Remember, all the choices are determined by the retards at the G4 forums. You know, the folks that openly profess thier love for Tommy Tallarico.

Anyone else out there find it interesting that Resident Evil 4 basically brought back the QTE system :D

I've replaying Shenmue 2 right now...just made it into Kowloon. It's undoubtedly my favourite non-racing game ever, and probably the most engrossing game I've ever played. I might replay it again as soon as I finish it.

One of the best moments in Shenmue II was getting lost in Wanchai and not being able to find the hotel. It just illustrated the huge scale of the game and the jump from small Japanese town to big city.

You got to take all the pictures!!! And Hang-On is a great racer so it even has your style in.

I'll have to agree with Shenmue being one of the worst games of all time. I think I'd rather play a grass growing simulator over it :P

Looks great, since my Saturn is more dear to me than my dreamcast I think it's quite shitty it wasn't released on the Sega Saturn. On the other hand, we can now enjoy better graphics.

All the people that hated Shenmue also hated the thought of Shenmue and I think most of them never gave Shenmue a real opportunity.

It's a slow game and you've got to actually work for your money. :)

I feel like there is just a "Shenmue gene" in 3% of all gamers, where if one is exposed to the Shenmue series (specifically the DC-EU version of Shenmue 2 soon after its release, when it was still the most graphically amazing game of its time), one finds themselves utterly gripped by the idea of "living out another's life through a game."

It's sort of like the development of novels out of books (by the women of the Heian court in Japan). It really does feel to me like the only true role-playing game, in that it somehow succeeds in being the first "novel" in game form, where most other RPGs are scarcely literary outlines. FFX would come close if it weren't for how unrelated its gameplay was.

The fact that Shenmue's gameplay IS it's story is what makes it work. When you have a task before you--no matter how obvious--you have to go around town and get it done. If that's carrying books as a favor or competing in an underground fight club for information, the atmosphere and gameplay never stop speaking to each other.

The game was a stroke of genius, and one that I really hope designers look at and give credit to in 20 years for inventing the "Surreal RPG." (is the acronym sRPG taken yet, heh?)

Sorry for being so long-winded, but it's hard not to get carried away writing about that game, given that it really did have an impact on my life the way an amazing series of movies or books did.

What was it that haters disliked about the game? I didn't have DC at the time so I didn't pay any mind.

There was barely any gameplay to speak of, outside of the arcade. It basically resulted in walking around boring enviroments, QTEs that had no risk and weren't any fun, there was combat via a VF-esq engine but it wasn't like you were challenged or you could die, and such events were pretty rare anyways. The bulk of the game was wandering around talking to people with bad voice acting and nothing of interest to say, advancing a boring story taking place in boring enviroments. That's why I didn't like it, anyways.

Ive all but given up on ever seeing an actual Shenmue 3 now, I just wish they'd commission a book or a shitty anime movie or something, i just wanna know how it ends...

As we established in another thread, RE4 is the next game in the Shenmue series...

...what with QUICK TIME EVENTS (A sole invention of Shenmue) and FIGURINES (Also a totally original idea from Shenmue)..

::roll eyes:: where are you :(

I think in many ways Shenmue was the first game to deliver on the "living out another's life" promise. Many games tried to get a similar experience across, but this was the first to actually pull it off. It might've been because it was a combination of the right director, the right budget(!), and the right technology to finally do it justice.

A lot of people don't like the series, and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the explicit entertainment of the player is never priority one in the game. If that's what people are expecting from it, they're always going to be disappointed. Priority one in this game is the living out the other person's life aspect. You really have to be in the right mood to do this to have any fun.

A lot of the game really comes across as a very well realized communication of what it's like to travel. When you go to a strange new country, what comprises most of your experience isn't just visiting the landmarks. It's also the little details you notice and the way life proceeds around you. Mundane stuff becomes interesting, because you compare/contrast it with your own life. Something about this game, S2 in particular, really recreates this well.
