Fortnite Adds AI-Powered NPCs as Creative Experimental Feature

Epic Games has added Conversations as an experimental feature, putting AI-powered NPCs in the hands of developers.

In a blog post on April 16, Epic Games announced that the Conversations system, previously known as the Persona device, is now available as an Experimental feature. This means that Fortnite developers can now use the tool to create AI-powered characters "with personalities and voices that can talk, react, and respond to player actions."

However, it's not that publishing content and projects using the Conversations tool is not yet available.

Explaining the feature, Epic Games states that "authoring dialogue trees for characters in your islands, conversations transform an NPC into an AI-powered character capable of unscripted dialogue and interactions with players, like a quest giver or narrator."

AI-powered characters can remember what's already happened in the game session, respond in context to player input, communicate through voice, and trigger events in-game.

There are restrictions to creations, as developers cannot create a persona designed to provide medical or mental health guidance, and cannot create a persona that role-plays or simulates a romantic partner.

Hopefully they won't have the same behavior issues their Darth Vader implementation experienced!
