Fox backs blu-ray for copyright protection

Twentieth Century Fox to Support Blu-ray Disc Format; Studio to Release Wide Range of New Products and Titles from Its Vast Film and Television Library

Fox's commitment to emerging technologies is dedicated to enhancing the consumer experience of its products and providing for backward compatibility with their existing home entertainment libraries while also aggressively protecting its intellectual property from piracy. The Blu-ray companies fully embrace the Studio's steadfast commitment to the fight against piracy and the preservation of the integrity of its properties. In fact, Fox's commitment to publish on Blu-ray is a direct result of the organization's recent adoption of copyright protection measures, including renewable security, that address the needs and concerns of the studio and the entire Hollywood community.

1) teh old. http://new.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=57236&highlight=blu-ray

2) It's a different copy protection, potentially. They seem to want a "renewable" copy protection. That is, if the disc gets cracked, they want the ability to disable the ability for it to play. This could lead to some bad things if used badly.

3) All of these topics keep getting moved to off-topic, even though they seem directly related to PS3/Xbox360 issues to me.

Wha-wait! Can you give me some more details on this?

In theory, with the copyright protection if your player is hacked then the consortium can revoke the key for your player, thus rendering it unable to play any blu-ray movie. Whether or not this will actually be used is anyone's guess.

Not exactly or, at least, not exclusively.

No studio will have the ability to disable your player, what they will be able to do is make it where a player will not play one of their movies that has been found to have been cracked or if they determine that you have some sort of "modded" system.

Last I heard, Xbox360 was using DVD9. Blu-ray is currently the only non-dvd format known to be used in a nextgen console. Even if this weren't the case, discussion of movie studios using the format is utterly unrelated to video games. Keeping it in the gaming forum splits discussion of upcoming movie releases onto two forums, one of which has nothing to do with movies.
