I thought they already displayed their primetime shows in HD? That's what it says on the screen anyway

No, and I don't know why it said that. All the "high definition" fox shows were displayed in 480p, not quite high def. They still looked pretty good imo.

Here's a good question. Why are cable/satellite companies allowed to rape you monetarily for HD signals on the public broadcast networks? :)

What do you mean? Mine are just part of the general HD package.

Are your HD receivers free? And Comcast charges for its HD package. You get everything under the sun that's available in HD, but its not a zero cost package.

Will HD signals always cost extra? When everyone is forced to broadcast in HD, which keeps being pushed back more and more because the FCC is stupid, will cable companies still charge an extra fee to get HD? That would fucking suck. Pretty much the limiting factor of HDTVs for me.

On the subject, anyone try to go to comcast.com lately? I was just trying to check prices and almost every page I go to gives me a 404 with some "sorry we can't find that page". Is it me or what? Just clicking "Get prices" on the frontpages gives me that. In firefox AND IE.

FOX HD offically starts Sept 12th with the NFL football games. That is when FOX will starting broadcasting true HD(720p). Before FOX was broadcasting in "high-resolution" (480p) which is pretty much just progressive-scan DVD quality. All sports on FOX and all the primetime shows that were broadcasted in widescreen and high-resolution will be shown in true HD after Sept 12th. This includes shows like 24, Bernie Mack, and Arrested Development.

ABC already broadcasts in HD. Every Monday Night Football game last season and all the Monday night preseason games shown this season have been in HD (720p).

I'm guessing because you're paying to receive those channels through a means other than an antenna on your roof. I know DirecTV has a nominal fee for sending you local broadcast channels over the dish, which is kinda shady, but also their right. If I wanted them for free, I could just hook the TV up to the antenna outside. But switching between the two would be an absolute pain in the ass, and the Tivo would have a fit. :p

Well what I'm referring to are the 'must carry' rules that the FCC imposes on the cable and satellite companies that require them to carry the 'regular' broadcast networks. If the FCC is requiring them to carry those networks AND requiring those networks to broadcast in HDTV, shouldn't those HDTV stations be broadcast without any additional cost to the subscriber?

The HD broadcasts can be obtained for free, but you need to buy an HD antenna for your roof to get them.
