FoxTrot has had quite a few game related comics in the past that I've seen posted here, including many relating to Mario/Nintendo. I wouldn't be surprised if the author includes Nintendo in comics now and then because of a hobby, as opposed to marketing dollars.

Also I think the buying an NDS for Nintendogs joke might be a bit overplayed here since about 100 other people have mentioned for many months now. Maybe Amend was coming from a less involved angle and for those people who know about the DS and Dogs that they might get a chuckle out of it.

I dunno... I think it's funny, in that "comic-in-the-paper" way. People don't even need to know that Nintendogs is a real game... the mom hates videogames, but then ends up becoming enamoured with one herself.

It's obvious this is gonna be a continuing story for a bit, so I bet they'll be a joke about her hogging it for herself so the son can't play, etc.

boy is it ever! i mean, is the ds's fall schedule the finest sequence of videogame releases in the short but illustrious history of the medium? very possibly! i'm not saying that every single videogame that has ever been remotely worth playing is on the nintendo ds. but if i was saying that, i wouldn't be far wrong! it's like the overwhelming splendor of the nintendo ds lineup utterly subsumes any merit other games may have, just as the light of more distant stars is lost in the brilliance of the sun at the height of day! you know what i'm saying? my wallet's gonna be hurtin' this fall!!!

I think you're right about Bill being a gamer. Like I said, he's a bit of a nerd. He covers what he's playing and I guess someone in his life if not himself perosnally is into Nintendogs right now.

Follow your logic to its natural conclusion, and there's a line of tech and game companies forming outside of Amend's home with checkbooks in hand.

Amend's just a bit of a nerd (in a good way.) This isn't the first real game to get mentioned in the comic, and it certainly won't be the last.

I think you missed the joke. Its about how your elders will cave in of their distaste for your hobby once the find something about the hobby or whatever they like. It isn't really about DS but about life in general.

The same joke is applied in this context(imagine the mom is a manager).

I heard Jim Davis got paid by the authors of Marmaduke, Heathcliff, and Mark Trail to form an oligopoly of uninteresting and unfunny comics, perpetuating their own existence by using each other's comics as justification for their complete laziness of prose. It's been so long since newspaper's comics have been funny that webcomics have trounced them in almost every way.

Except for the fact that most webcomics are only for videogame freaks and other assorted otaku varieties.

I do enjoy a good Dilbert, Far Side (well, did enjoy), or Foxtrot now and then, however.

If you read Foxtrot normaly you see that he does that with most big, trend itmes. The xbox, the Gamecube, PS2, Doom III, Imacs and so on.. it is made for his fanbase, and most do know of these items....

He's made jokes about similarly specific games in the past, really...as someone who reads the strip I'm really not finding it to scream "BUY ME" as it completely fits in with the characters involved.
