Franchises That Just Disappeared?

Bioshock's been dormant since 2013 with Infinite. Very strange for a franchise that supposedly always returned a healthy profit.

For example, Bioshock Infinite broke even around 6M units sold at $60--which it actually did do--and it sold 11M units lifetime, not all at $60 of course.

Is this Bloodborne? Not sure what this is but it looks awesome.

This one really hurts.

Fuck Randy. First he tried turning the next game into a comedy (which eventually turned into Battleborn), then when that didn't pan out, he buried the series altogether, leaving the fans hanging like chumps.
I've never played these games before. What's the general gist of them and best way to play them these days?

Yeah

It's a trilogy and the stories are connected, so you should play them in release order.

As to where to play them, that depends on where do you do your gaming. PC is always best but I guess the console versions are fine as well.

I don't game much on PC, but am exploring it more. My PC can run most early PS5 games and before fine, at least 1080/60 if not better. I'd be able to run these. Looks like they're on sale on GOG I might grab them. Thanks!

Enjoy them! First two games are pretty good, nice tactical (but not too complicated) gameplay, and if you've ever watched the TV series Band of Brothers then you are going to love the games for sure.

Third game is also cool but I don't remember it as fondly. Should try and give it a replay, IIRC my old PC back then could barely run it lol.

Remakes for Max Payne 1 and 2 are still in the works at Remedy going by the last time that I've heard about them. Max Payne 1 remake is still going to be slated for late 2026. The Max Payne 2 Remake is slated to be a 2027 release. We'll see.

Still RIP James McCaffrey

Had no idea those were a thing, nor that James had passed, that's a shame.

Another franchise too...Advanced Wars is likely dead dead for good after re-boot camp's sales.

Also, does Half Life count at this point (are we going to consider Alyx keeping it alive?)

PGR2 is my favorite racing game of all time. I keep an OG xbox setup just for that game. Forza Horizon somewhat carries the torch for it but it's not quite the same.

He was only 65 years old too. Glad we at least got a Max Payne 3 out of him... and I did like Max Payne 3. It was a 'Houser' take on the franchise... but it was a good take. The first time I have ever seen James McCaffrey in anything was the 1990's TV show Viper.

I miss trauma centre by atlus, although I guess they are not profitable enough compared to persona.

Guitar Hero (it was so BIG back in the day, such a misfortune)
Rock band

Many Sony IPs:
Syphon filter (loved those games on psp)
Gravity rush (they should at least make a pc port)
Wipeout
Locoroco (loved them on psp)
SOCOM
Sing star (I don't understand why they no longer make it, it's the ultimate house party game, and it doesn't have big competitions)

Oh, and Wii Music, it was quite successful, I hope Nintendo makes a sequel in the near future.

So yeah, most music games are basically dead.

When was the last Castlevania game? How did they have that popular Netflix show and not capatilize on its success? Feels like in the age of souls likes a Castlevania in a similar style would be massive.

I miss a few very successful ones that their studio don't want to continue because wokism tells them that is problematic to have white heterosexual males as protagonists. Examples: Uncharted, Days Gone.

There are other ones that didn't continue because of bad sales but I'd love to see back with brand new entries: Wipeout, Motorstorm, Darkstalkers, Final Fight.

Other than this, there have been a few failed attempts to bring it back modernizing it, but I'd try it again being more faithful to the original 2 games: Sensible World of Soccer.

I mean after 7. Not unbounded or whatever game that was masquerading under the legendary name

A real sequel to 7.

Probably one of my biggest disappointments in gaming and I've been on the scene since '83.

"lollipop_disappointed: I hope if they do ever bring back Mirror's Edge they think of a more interesting outside the box way to do the open world, or just make it linear again like 1. Catalyst still has cool game mechanics and graphics, but the open world they made just isn't interesting. Also, both games had some really bad writing lol, but it's way more of a problem in Catalyst because of the length/less focused mission design.

Or, even better, some other company make a spiritual successor so I don't have to buy another EA game.

Wish the Catherine line of games got off. I think the plan was to make a series of these quirky tales of twilight zone-ish situations

I'm just glad Suikoden came back to life

Splinter Cell will always be the most sad with it's absence. It's an extremely unique take on stealth with its legacy in Thief. The only reason why we don't have a new Splinter Cell is because Ubisoft don't know how they can make it within their cynical format.

What's extra sad is that I personally believe this has its roots in the fact that Conviction changed its direction from a social stealth fugitive game to the one we got. Their original vision could've breathed new life into the franchise with confidence, and eventually benefited an open world design.

It speaks to a broader issue with Ubisoft where they have to replicate their design philosophy across all games. All their games must now be Far Cry in some form. It's even harmed Assassin's Creed.

Maybe once Ubisoft are liquidated someone confident and passionate can give us what we want.

Bloody Roar. The last one was Bloody Roar 4 in 2003. Then the quietly stopped being made. To this day, it's the most underrated fighting game series.

Burnout. I loved Takedown, Revenge and Paradise. But after Paradise, which came out in 2008, the series was dropped, for some reason, apart from a remaster of Paradise that came out years later.

Mega Man X. The final mainline game to come out was X8 in 2004. All we got afterwards were a couple spin-offs and compilation re-releases. In the wake of a new Classic series Mega Man coming out next year, I wish for an X9 as well.

Would have loved to have seen these evolve further. The first one in particular was really ambitious and delivered something unique. But hey - we eventually got an Outcast sequel, who knows?
