Free guy impressions

Saw it today with the fam, amazing movie, loved every single second, I literally cried out laughing many times, the recreation of a virtual world IRL and the random stuff that's going on in the background is simply perfect. Best movie of the year so far.

Would've been funny to show the romance scenes taking place in the real world. Even a single split screen scene or a regular gimmick. Maybe they did that and I missed it. Might watch again.

Had an off topic thought while watching the film:
Young James Spader (not sure his name, from Stranger Things) should be in a remake of Crash(1996) since Cronenberg films are being remade. Free Guy put glasses on him and he was like Daniel from Stargate movie too. Trying to think who should be Rosanna Arquette...maybe Kate Beckinsale. With new tech electric and self-driving cars these could add some different scenes.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Pretty disappointing and not at all what the trailer promised.
There are a couple of decent jokes in there, but the gaming elements are way too cliché and the tame humor is ruined by its political correctness.
Including real life streamers was a horrible idea, doubly so for Pokémane and that dumb dude with the bandana.

Also, the movie is a love story in disguise and a pretty bad one at that. Even the every charismatic Ryan Reynolds can't save this one.
Thank you for saving me the time. I am not watching anything with streamers in there.

Had to give it a watch. I liked the premise for most of the movie, but the funny part to me was how the writers realized at the end what all Disney owns and started using it. Don’t know how to finish this movie…
…throw in some Marvel and Star Wars references.
The kids will love it!

It was OK, but my kid LOVED it. He recognized some of the streamers and that Disney reference sequence mentioned above had him cheering and jumping off the couch.

So this is a film basically for elementary school kids.

It would be worth it if I can bait and switch him into watching Tron now.

Hmm, thought I already replied to this thread, guess not.. Anyway, I had low-ish expectations, so nowhere to go but up. That being said, the premise (and early execution of it) was fun. Reynolds is just fun to watch in anything, and I dig a weird-concept one-off film like this. I REALLY dug the Tron-inspired things that were going on here - and as a former level artist for games, I appreciated a lot of the "game rules" and such and how they were portrayed.

Two things, I found myself REALLY enjoying the first half of the film but really not liking the second half - not sure when I have experienced this to such a degree before, but this film did it. I felt they could have done something a lot more interesting with the resolution instead, but they had to tie it up neatly and satisfyingly, and it was ultimately a kid's film, so there you go.

And that brings me to the second point - yes this IS ultimately a kid-friendly film, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The people in here bellyaching about how garbage it is etc - come on, not every film has to be a masterpiece, sometimes a world can just be fun to hang out in and watch, even if it is flawed. I like that some of the posters were saying they were happy that they would watch it with their kids, there are much more saccharine-sweet drivel you could have to suffer through so this would at least be satisfying for a little different change of pace (and despite the callouts, it isn't "just another Marvel film" which is fine too, but people gotta be starting to get a little burned out on those). Anyway just my $0.02.

Movies like Galaxy Quest have proven you can be a "kids movie" but still be a good movie, and do a good job having fun referencing a fan base rather than making fun of them or not understanding them. This just wasn't a very good movie and seems to have been written by people with a passing awareness of video game culture at best.

Watched it the other day. Almost zero redeeming qualities; it makes Ready Player One look like a masterpiece in comparison. Could maybe be a decent plot in an actual video game.

sidenote: I do think RP1 has value at least as a warning/cautionary tale which was intentional on Speilberg's part imo.

I could’ve done without the cringy cameos. I give it 6/10. Fun but highly cringy at times I felt like I had to look away.
