Hardly. Most basic functions that are locked out of Free accounts (like putting stuff on the AH) can be bought cheaply. Beyond that you're really just missing quests for the lvl 25+ zones, something you can totally avoid if you want by leveling through skirmishes and dungeons (which is a lot easier now thanks to the new dungeon feature).

The only free MMO that i find myself coming back to at the moment is Air Rivals (previously Space Cowboy Online). This is mainly because it has some incredible skill based PVP.

Finally giving this one a shot. I feel like pretending I'm a Robotech pilot or something :lol (ohh that would be a nice soundtrack to play during the game)

Looks like EverQuest II is going to have a F2P service along with its subscription service. Looking at the chart they showed it looks like if you're going to spend $200 a year on it, then you might as well buy the subscription fee.

Guarantee I'm going to screw up this post? Yeah.
Those prices cannot possibly be final. As of right now a subscription is less money with no restrictions. :lol

Who the fuck would go Platinum tier? And I paid $200 for a LotRO lifetime membership, getting only one year of access for that lump sum is a joke.

I'll preface this by saying all F2P MMOs are grind-heavy. Comes with the territory.

Games I've played in the past few years that I liked:
Atlantica Online - Turn-based MMO were you control up to a 9 character party
Runes of Magic - WOW clone
Perfect World International - China's "WOW". Large player base.
Rappelz - Typical fantasy MMO but with a heavy emphasis on the pet system.

Games I've heard were good from others but haven't played myself:
Allods Online - Unabashed WOW clone (mixed opinions on this one)
Dragonball Online - It's Dragonball
Sword 2 - I believe you control a 3 character party in this game.
Dragonica - Plays like Maple Story I believe.
Wonderking - Ditto

Old school F2Ps (Not sure about their current state but they were big in the past):
Silkroad
Rakion
Fly For Fun
Gunbound
Gunz: The Duel
R.O.S.E Online
9Dragons
Runescape
Knight Online

Remember when EQ2 was a "threat" to world of warcraft with its amazing graphics and experienced MMO developer? *sigh*
more people were looking for something easy to crack into - wow was the deal.

Not sure if Rift: Planes of Telara or TERA Online will be F2P (I doubt it), but we need a better F2P game fellas.

I was so excited for that game, ugh..I did get some enjoyment form it, but it just never captured anything close to the fun I got form the first everquest.

On another note thanks, Xilium I was hoping someone would bring up Atlantica Online been sort of toying with trying it out. That or retrying out Runes of magic it was fun for the brief time I spent in it, but I wiped my hd after a couple months of the game an never bothered downloading again. I think I need something to help scratch my mmorpg itch which has really reared it's ugly head since the ffxiv benchmark came out. None of the p2p mmorpgs call out enough to me spend cash on them right now.

"Hardcore" MMOs will never be a threat to WoW.

Sorry to bump this old thread (this is pretty much the F2P Community thread on GAF);

but Allods Online just hit their 2.0.06 patch, and it's changed a lot of things!

First, there's no fatigue.

Basically fatigue in Allods was put in place to steer people from leveling like mad. Now that there's insane amounts of things to do in the game (tons of events happening all the time at high level, crazy pvp, fun stuff) - they don't have to worry about that.

Secondly they added a second form of currency to curb cash shop users from buying item shop items and selling them for tons of gold, you can buy crystals and exchange them with other players!

Some interesting other things - every so many quests you do, you get a chest with a piece of gear that fits into a slot you have or don't have that's better than what you wear at your level - if your gear is the best for your level, it gives you gold! So it's INSANELY helpful when you level up and get rubies (buying your talent points).

Basically, the game is leagues ahead what it used to be earlier on in this thread, and it's only been months later.

I only have to say that they redesigned the entire Paladin class to be fucking AWESOME!

I've got some new screenshots too of my new pally, I'll leave these here, the game is gorgeous!
