Don't know a lot about cars, but I know a bit about batteries. Couldn't the massive potential difference drain the first battery faster?

Batteries emit hydrogen gas and there is a chance that in the presence of a spark or flame they will ignite?

It's dangerous because the vehicle giving the jumpstart has it's alternator pumping juice down to the battery to attempt to recharge it's own battery AND the other car's battery, putting a strain on it that could lead to shit generally becoming fucked.

nope, remember, they shouldn't be left connected after the jumpstart is finished

an even closer hint: The alternator is designed to provide enough power to charge the vehicle's battery and power the electronics of the car itself.

Jim got it, good job! Hopefully people will follow this little rule when they have to jump someones car!

a little extra note: The car needing the jumpstart has a dead battery for a reason, 9 times out of 10 is because the alternator has given out in that car. So when you jumpstart their car and leave the cables attached with both cars running, you run the risk of having your alternator overworked providing power to 2 batteries and an electrical load of 2 vehicles.

However, 9 times out of 10 around my house is usually because the wife leaves the damn light(s) on!
