There are waves of rage hitting me ever since I read that story, my contempt for the FN pieces of shit is immeasurable.

Sometimes I start thinking that the FN is "only" an extreme political group with nationalist views and irrealistic but simple theories on economy, and not the bunch of racists most people claim they are... and then one of them starts spouting such hateful declarations and remembers me that "most people" may be right after all.

In my hometown, you can't go out without seeing FN stickers insulting muslims, homosexuals or antifascists people. So I'm pretty used to this classic bullshit.

It's still a disgusting far right party despite Marine Le Pen efforts to give a new and cooler image to it.

If America had a multi-party political tradition and had a party this racist, they probably still wouldn't be polling as the nation's largest.

You can thanks French journalist, who everydays talk about FN.
BTW, that's just as expected from that party. No ideas, only point at people.

That imported classic racism. Does French even have a history of lynching?

Not really. Well, not in the main country at least. But even if France profited a lot from slavery, there were few slaves in the metropole itself, they were mainly sent to the colonies. I think it was true for most other countries too, the US have a different history towards it because they're former colonies.

i'm curious how racist you can be before you cannot convince yourself to drop the 'I have xxx friends' line. Surely there is a limit.

No, I don't think so. The human mind rationalizes everything. The dumbest things I've ever heard said are the excuses people give when they do something wrong and are caught. Even when they know that what they're doing is wrong, they have some reason that they are the exception.

Ariel Castro gave such a good example of this with his whole, "I am not a monster" "I was just addicted to pornography" (paraphrasing) crap.

Here we go again (note: "avoir la banane", in English "to have a/the banana" colloquially means "to be happy")

Black French minister victim of new racist taunt

A far-right magazine has provoked outrage in France after it used its front cover to racially taunt the country's black minister Christiane Taubira. The cover headline, which compares Taubira to a monkey, has been described as an attack "on the whole of France".

France's justice minister has been publicly subjected to racist taunts for the third time in barely a month, triggering a wave of outrage on Tuesday over the hounding of the country's top black politician.

In the wake of two highly-publicised incidents in which the minister, Christiane Taubira, was compared to a monkey, far right weekly magazine Minute published a cover page with the headline "Crafty as a monkey, Taubira gets her banana back".

Amid an outcry over the magazine's contents, French PM Jean-Marc Ayrault said he had asked prosecutors to investigate whether any law had been broken and Interior Minister Manuel Valls announced he was examining whether it was legally possible to block the distribution of the magazine.

"We cannot let this pass," he said. "This is not just Taubira who has been attacked for her colour. It is the Republic, it is France and its values that are under attack," Valls added.

Numerous politicians took to Twitter to demand the prosecution of the magazine's editor and publisher for incitement to racial hatred.

Health Minister Marisol Touraine said: "An abomination from Minute, the newspaper that hates France and incites racial hatred."

Harlem Désir, the First Secretary of the ruling Socialist Party and one of the founders of SOS Racisme, said all copies of the magazine should be seized by police.

Sports Minister Valerie Fourneyron called the cover "Unacceptable and nauseating" and there was also widespread condemnation from members of the centre-right UMP opposition party.

Rights group SOS Racisme said it would lodge a legal complaint over the cover, a move that will force authorities to investigate whether any law has been breached.

Taubira is a hate figure for some on the right in French politics as she was the minister reponsible for the legalisation of gay marriage earlier this year.

Last week, she spoke publicly of her dismay over the attacks she has been subjected to and implicitly criticised her government colleagues for not coming to her defence.

Warning of a threat to France's social cohesion, Taubira told the Liberation daily that, "Inhibitions are disappearing, dykes have been breached."

At the end of last month, a group of children attending an anti-Taubira/anti-gay marriage demonstration were filmed chanting "monkey, eat your banana".

That came shortly after an electoral candidate of the far right National Front (FN) was expelled from her party for writing on her Facebook page that she would prefer to see the minister "swinging from the branches rather than in government".

The treatment of Taubira has sparked much soul-searching among liberal commentators over whether racism has become widely acceptable in parts of French society.

Wow. That cover, just wow.

Then fuck the French right.

“I’d prefer to see her swinging from a tree than in government,” she added, denying that she or the photo were racist, claiming “I have friends who are black.”

And she has friends who are lawyers.

Le Lab contacted Christiane Taubira's entourage but they indicated that the minister would not engage legal action, saying it would "increase the sales of the weekly by 10% ." Her relatives say they also believe that the weekly made this front page with the advice of a lawyer.

After being contacted by FranceTV Info, Richard Malka -a lawyer specialized in the press- said: "The title was chosen to avoid a conviction. Things are complicated because the sentences themselves are harmless. They are part of everyday language. The charge can only be understood with the context and it's the context which makes the message horrible."

The man, who defended Charlie Hebdo during the case of the Muhammad caricatures, added: "This attack is only directed at Taubira. It is therefore no racial defamation or incitement to hatred." According to him, the best answer from the minister is "indifference and contempt."

So, I could say "I'm not saying all black people are monkeys, but you are a monkey" to a black person and get away with it? It's not racist if you direct your racial slur at an individual and not the group?

Never....

Gets....

Old.....

I mean like... how does that work. Do these people like, keep track? Do they exchange pleasantries with someone black and think to themselves "Yes, now I have at least one black friend!".

Shit is so weird.

Don't worry guys, (almost) nobody is reading Minute in France, except a little % of FN voters. I can't even remember seeing a copy of Minute once in my entire life, despite I am living in a FN-friendly city.

In fact, I think we never talked about it as much as today.

That imported classic racism. Does French even have a history of lynching?

Lynching no, we do have an history of colonialism and "social darwinism" at the turn of the 20th century, like most european nations.

Though this guy was deputy, "mayor" of Paris (at the time president of the municipal council) and minister under the third republic (1870s-80s) :

Okay, I have to admit that I legit lol'd at even French politicians using the "I have a black friend" excuse.

I'm a bit appalled at the "Besmirching our honor by calling our racist organization, racist" bit though.

The hilariously sad thing is that Minute sells two copies a month. They are literally in the "there is no such thing as bad publicity" zone.

Such a depressing state of affairs.

That shit is getting old fast. And "You are racist for seeing racism with your racist eyes" nonsense.

I thought they were on her side? This is getting confusing.

It's the "We are not racists, but we can't control what our individual supporters say or do" -defence.

It's up there with the "it's just a harmless joke" -defence.

It's a common tactic with the poplists parties in Europe.

I thought they were on her side? This is getting confusing.

She's been trying to give the FN a more respectable image, kicking out the more extreme members and elements. Publishing blatantly racist jokes goes against that goal. She had to publicly express her disapprovement or she'd be accused of condoning racism.

Guys, I've run out of facepalms.

An elected official from the UMP party posted a pastiche of the Banania ad with the slogan : "Y a pas bon Taubira"

Claudine Declerck -UMP town councillor of Combs-la-Ville- who posted on her Facebook profile a picture of Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira as a pastiche of the Banania ad -titled "There's no good Taubira"- will be suspended and possibly excluded from the party.

The picture, posted in mid-September, was still visible on Friday morning on the public profile of Claudine Declerck, before being deleted at 1 pm.

"I found it humorous, it's really not a big deal" said Claudine Declerck , evoking a "blunder" .
"I have some Banania at home and I found it funny" she said. " For me, it was not racist, I have black and yellow friends".

Jean-Francois Copé, president of the UMP party, announced this friday on Twitter an exclusion proceeding against a UMP councilor who posted on Facebook a picture of the Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira , titled "There's no good Taubira"

"I condemn in the strongest force any racist act, comment or behavior." wrote Jean-Francois Copé in the first tweet, immediately followed by two others.

"Following the discovery of the elements shared on her Facebook page, Claudine Declerk faces an exclusion proceeding from the UMP," he wrote, then : "Wherever it comes from, hate of others is not acceptable."

The three tweets are signed "JFC", indicating that Jean-François Copé wrote it himself -not his entourage-.

These stories are pretty damning evidence that, despite what many Europeans claim, their nations are as a whole no less racist than the United States.

Looks like Republicans finally have a competition in the field of being extremely racist, close-minded, and bigoted after all.

As the collective first world countries continue to shit on blacks...aliens descend upon earth and they look remarkably like black people.

There is a moment of confusion for the entire world.

Always so oversensitive about race

In Europe we don't spend so much time thinking about race so it really isn't a problem

holy crap this is literally the same defense that ToxicAdam just used to defend Sly Stallone for saying "nigger".

Hell, at least their politicians are up-front about it. It would probably be more progress and co-operation instead of subtly doing things because of racism...

maybe? heh. Shameful that not much is ever going to change in this world for minorities.

All of that free labor and destruction of a people and content for nothing :\, they'll never invite us to prom.

Sometimes I think Europe is more racist than the US. Many countries don't have a real "melting pot" mentality.

I think a big issue is how Black people were exploited and then just left on their own by Europe. In the US, the effects of slavery are much more evident.

I think that holding up a measuring stick to other countries to determine how racist everyone else can be is vastly missing the point.
