Let's see:

1. Wallace & Gromit may be number 1, but it's set for a much lower opening then it (probably -- I'll see in a couple hours) deserves. I suspect that it'll have pretty good legs, though.
2. Serenity dropped a lot -- over 60% from last Friday's total. I called this earlier, but so much for legs.
3. A History of Violence dropped "only" a little over 40% from last Friday -- not as bad as I had feared, given some of the reactions I've seen, but it's still unlikely to turn a profit domestically.
4. Waiting and Two For The Money, which both got very bad reviews, made more than both of the above.
5. Flightplan is at #2, and is showing surprisingly decent legs. Good god, why?

I don't know much of anything about The Gospel, but given the number of screens, it did pretty damn well. Hey, that got crappy reviews, too!

I was coming here just to post a link right now.

Rankings, for the lazy:

1. Wallace and Gromit
2. Flightplan (who the hell is still seeing this movie)
3. In Her Shoes
4. Two for the Money
5. The Gospel
6. Waiting...
7. Corpse Bride
8. A History of Violence
9. Serenity
10. Into the Blue

There were only about 30 people in the house when I went to see W&G at 9:30 last night--I assume earlier times were more packed, though.

I dunno, they pretty much shunned Serenity and picked up on Wallace and Gromit, so I'm cool with the general public.

Feh.

Anyone up for "North Country" in a couple of weeks?

That just looks, so... I mean, I know it was an important case, but I'm just not sure sexual harassment really works as the subject for a movie. I can't seem to take the trailer seriously.

Wallace and Gromit finally made it to #1? SWEET! Didn't a W&G movie come out last year and bomb?

I guess there's no hope on seeing a serenity sequel on the big screen then...:(

I dont understand why people are refusing to see serenity. none of my friends want to see it, no matter how much I pursuaded them. Watched it three times, and all three times I was alone...but their loss, I loved every minute of it and I'll prob see it 2 more times, just to make it the movie that I watched the most times on the theater...batman begin was 4...hehe...

I just hope whedon will get to continue the story in some form...

The reviews so far make it seem like a good-enough movie. And it's a true story. I look at it more as an underdog-against-the-odds-with-political/historical-themes movie rather than a story about just sexual harrassment. After sobbing through "The Constant Gardener", I figured out how much I missed those movies.

Hah, Serenity dropped like a ton of bricks. "The phenomenon taking America by storm..." Yeah, right.

Maybe it wasn't so smart to do all of those Serenity screenings over the summer, eh? Sure, some fans dragged their friends to see it a second time just to try to pad the box office, but the majority of people who were rabid about it already saw the movie over the summer.

Very doubtful. Most of the screening people probably went to see it again. The fans are pretty friggin' hardcore.

Serenity has a made for tv vibe, even in the trailers. I probably wont see it in theaters.

And that would be where the ignorance of America comes in.

I will never see movies with small budgets!

I'm confused. They shunned a good movie and went to see another good movie so you're cool with the public? Darnit, they should both be doing well silly pants.

Good movie fans am cry.

Fixed.

Anyway, at least the movies around Serenity all pretty much brought in the same amount, so Serenity could easily end up higher for the weekend.

I really hope it does. It is really sad that trash like Flight Plan, Waiting, and Two for the Money do better than such an amazing movie like Serenity or Violence.

America will go and see movies with small budgets. The trailer for Serenity was terrible, Everytime it started before a movie I was seeing. I wanted to get up and leave

What the hell is The Gospel?

In interesting film by Atlanta local Rainforest films, also have a good friend who was in it. I went to a sneak preview for it but had to leave early for work reasons, but it was starting to shape up into a pretty good movie.

The singers in the movie are HUGE gospel stars. Enormous built in audience for the flick.

The first trailer sucked. The second was good.

And you definitely did not want to get up and leave.

if i would have not known anything about whedon or firefly, i would have thought Serenity was like galaxyquest or something. People will go to see low budget movies, but not scifi/action ones, and serenity had a low budget, made for tv type of look.

Not everyone worships the ground Whedon walks on.
Just because someone loves Serenity doesn't make them a blind Whedon fan that worships his everything with his name attached. I am a big Whedon fan, LOVED Serenity, but i'm not afraid to smash him into the ground when he delivers horrendous pretentious and unwatchable drivel like "A Hole in the World" *shudder*

Oh sorry, i realised i just quoted Manabyte, the person who was going ga ga over Revenge of the Sith like it was second coming of christ :lol

Im surprised it dropped so much. It did 10 million last week right? so 4 million this week.

So a total of 16 million after 2 weeks. Meh. It needed more.

Lets say this movie does 2 million next week, and then 1 million, itll finish off with 23 million domestically.

Add in international (maybe 10 million) and thats 33. After DVDs, it will make a profit, but I dont see any exec running to make a sequal.

NBC Universal knew full well Serenity would drop this much after the Browncoats saw it the first week. They even said as much. Go back into the Big Serenity Thread and look for the quotes from the Universal people (CEO I think).

The reason Serenity is in the theaters is NBC Universal [rightly] believe pleasing Joss is very, very profitable.

Sure, Serenity may just recoup its production budget in theaters worldwide. Whatever it doesn't make up through the theatrical run will be made up on DVD and through whatever future projects Joss does for NBC/Universal/USA Network/Sci-Fi Channel...

... cause I'm willing to bet that Fox now has a sworn enemy in Mr. Whedon.

wallace and gromit on saturday during the last matinee showing for us was probably ~66% filled. I am guessing the movie will end up with a domestic gross between $40-50M. Not bad for a kids movie released outside of any holidays or breaks.

It could have legs through halloween because of it's obvious halloween influence. MAYBE even legs through thanksgiving thanks to the X-Mas themed madagascar short before the movie (which IMHO was simply ok).

Anyway, personal thought on madagascar is 10/10. Perfect movie just like a pixar short. The kids loved it, the adults loved it, and every last frame of celluloid was perfect.

and for the record on serenity, it is doing wehat needs to be done. creating a successful sci-fi back catalog title for Universal. They got to spend a measly $40M on a movie that will be making them money (though not tons) for years to come. Once you figure in DVD sales, advertising during it's network premiere on (NBC? scifi?) and next-gen format sales (UMD, BRD, etc) you won't see Universal crying any tears over it's lower theatrical profits.

What does that really have to do with it? They took in money on those screenings, and in total they probably didn't sell more than 5000 tickets each time that they did it -- a drop in the bucket compared to a film in wide release.

Er when talking about upcoming big movies don't forget....

Chicken Little
Fun With Dick and Jane
Jarhead (has the potential to break 100 with the buzz its getting)

Wow, Into the Blue really tanked. It probably won't even recoup Jessica Alba's salary.

Into The Blue = Into The Red

And I don't get the overdone Serenity talk myself...pro or con.

Serenity looked terrible. Now it is doing terrible. Why is that surprising? Whether it's a good movie or not doesn't really matter when you release a trailer like that.

Did anyone expect any less? It was a failed TV show and now its a failed movie. No surprises.

Of course, the fact that Fox completely fucked the show up and confused viewers had NOTHING to do with it being a failed TV show.

It isn't a failed movie. The studio never expected it to do huge numbers. It did just about what they had predicted.

For a movie that continues a cancelled TV show with a $39 million budget, featuring a cast of complete unknowns and a HORRIBLE marketing campaign from Universal, it's done pretty well. There's still worldwide numbers and DVD sales (which will be huge, and in some cases, the DVD sales are what got big screen sequels to quite a few movies).

Of course, that after 3 weeks of bad word of mouth and horrible reviews, and Flight Plan is still doing good, I think it's safe to say the public sucks.
