From the World of John Wick: Ballerina | New Trailer | 2025

Just been looking at the imdb page for this, apparently the original script has lots of nudity for Ana's character and some ass hat decided to not do that? That's as bad as Michael Bay telling scarlett johansson that he didn't think her idea of doing a topless scene in The Island was needed so they wouldn't do it.
Typical modern hollywood. "Lets kill 75 people with gunshots right to their face and have 300 'fucks' in the script....but boobs? Not for modern audiences, I can't take my kids or my grandma to see a film like that!!!!"

Now what we have a John Wick Cinematic Universe I think we've reached the nadir of modern Hollywood

Still looking forward to John Wick 4 even though Keanu is literally 60 years old now

So tired of good things being milked. At one time, John Wick was such a breath of fresh air...then they had "expand the world" which only made it less interesting to me.

I know this is being framed as something I'm "supposed to like" - John Wick universe with some cameos, hot girl main character, over the top action.

That said, I'm really really tired of Hollywood taking a male-focused IP and forcing a girlboss into it. Hot or not.

John Wick 3 was already pretty stupid plot-wise, this just takes it even further. Why is Hollywood so against letting the male demographic have something to watch that's designed for them? Why do we need girlbosses in everything?

Especially since it's Ana, she loves doing scenes involving nudity. I roll my eyes whenever Hollywood goes out of their way to make sure their attractive female actors are fully clothed at all times

Saw this in 4DX.

Had a really good time with this, the "vibe" is definitely different from john wick, since she obviously isn't as physically capable as wick, so the approach to fights here is different, but no less brutal; there's a couple deaths so wild I thought I was watching final destination.
This difference becomes really pronounced when john wick shows up and they fight, well they don't really fight as wick absolutely completely dominates her, like he bodies her as badly as any random he's effortlessly taken out before. Pretty refreshing to see that, she's exceptionally skilled, yet wick is just something else entirely, and the way he manhandles her shows it .
The few times she does get hit, she just goes flying, there's a fight at the start in a club where I was surprised they pulled no punches sending her into walls as hard as possible.

I thought this was fun. Maybe not on the level of the John Wicks but still enjoyable with some really well done set pieces.

But - that being said - Ana looks great and the world does have meat on its bones to expand (if done correctly unlike the Peacock series).
A world where hitmen are allowed to kill people with reckless abandon, and can self police, isn't one I would think of as having room to "expand".
Have they explained yet how that works? I didn't see "The Continental".

I admit, I'm probably going to see this because T-Mobile was offering $5 tickets

I hope it's good but for 5 bucks I won't mind too much if it isn't

It was pretty good, Ana de Armas sells the action well and little time is wasted in explaining this really silly world the John Wick franchise has turned into.
Having a new, super powerful villainous group appear late in the franchise, a group no one mentioned ever before, is just one of those things you have to accept.

Yeh I think the world of John Wick being kinda silly is all part of the fun. Everyone sitting in this lobby is a highly skilled, deadly, globe trotting assassin? Sure, why not.

Well, I enjoyed that quite a bit, far more than I was expecting. The weakest part was, oddly enough, the bit with John Wick, as I felt his energy was way off from the rest of the film and getting back to the magic bullet deflecting suit after 90 minutes of intense somewhat more grounded stuff was unwelcome. I also don't care for some of the casting, some of the actors really really stick out, and not in good ways. Can't all be Lance Reddick, I suppose.

But WOW, were they inventive. And for the most part they kept things quick and moving, unlike the last few JW films where he uses the same technique on 20 guys in a row, here they mix it up every 2-4 guys and its a fresh feeling. And the flamethrowers, woooooooooooooooooooooooooow, I think that stuff might take my '2025 is the best stunt show of the past few decades!" award away from M:I8 because it looked very very practical. I thought the grenade stuff was the highlight but noooooooooooooooooo they topped that bit several times over :P

Sadly, I really disliked the "do you think you can fight a big man and win? Fight like a girl!" and then her first mission has her taking not one, not two, not three, but at least FOUR jump spinning kicks from men, and she's none the worse for wear. Why fight like a girl when you can take the most powerful blows men can offer and shrug them off? Just don't get hit by a girl, EVERY TIME she got knocked out was by a little tap from a woman :P Not really a complaint I suppose as its ubiquitous across this genre.

If you are on the fence about seeing this movie, JUST DO IT!

And make sure you splurge for the AXR or whatever the loudest sound system you can get as this movie makes even WARFARE seem like a quite stroll through the park. Truly a top notch cinematic experience.

This is out already? I still haven't seen 4 yet. Shit, I even own it and just keep forgetting to watch it. I rarely have time to watch a rated R movie these days that lasts more than 90 minutes.

Fun little movie, saw it in Dolby Cinema a couple of days ago. Loved almost all of it with the exception of the John Wick climax. I was getting ready for John Wick to be sort of a "final boss" and basically be the villain at the end (at least temporarily), with a lot of handicaps of some sort because no way would she actually stand a chance. Instead he simply joins her side and it sort of takes away from the lore that they had setup.

Other than that though, good stuff. It's basically a John Wick-lite movie. The biggest deficiency compared to the Wick movies may be the lead - who is good and pulls it off. BUT there is something about the way Keanu Reeves carries himself and delivers his lines that this new girl doesn't quite match. Still good, but Keanu Reeves is several layers higher.

Well, yeah. When Keanu glares at me and says "I'm gonna kill you now" I get scared. When Ana does it I just get aroused :P

There is just no world where a 120 pound girl is intimidating. Doesn't mean I don't like watching them in action at times, but the script MUST realize how ludicrous it all is and either lean in on the pulp action (like the super fun Interceptor with Elsa Patay) or work really really hard to sell the woman as a killer and restrain the desire to have her hip check waves of guys 100 pounds heavier (T2 Sarah Connor style).

I thought it was pretty good. John Wick is about a thousand times better assassin than her. And there are some major plot holes. But overall it was good. I liked the flamethrower stuff.

It was a pretty good movie. Nowhere near as good as the other John Wick movies. A bit more gory though. I kind of felt like it wasn't directed and shot as well as previous John Wick movies. They tried to make her like an amateur John Wick when they should have made her something completely else.

A pretty good summary of What Happened™

I think he's spot-on, especially with his discussion about the differences in a universe like Marvel, with multiple leading characters, and ones like Mad Max or John Wick where the main character is central to the universe.

With regards to Furiosa, in his discussion, for me, it dragged on far too long. That was the bigger issue than the "girl boss" stuff. It felt like it desperately needed to have 45 minutes trimmed off the run time. It went for so long that it went from a movie that was borderline awesome to feeling like "are we there yet"?

So is it 'was suppose to be direct to stream, but they decided to double dip into theatres as well' level type of movie?

If they had cut too much time, people would have complained about Furiosa being OP or too 'girlboss'. Instead, they had to drag her through the mud for almost 2/3 of the movie to show her progression.

Even then, she received help on multiple occasions, almost died from torture, and only got revenge in the end due to outside factors. I get why certain stubborn fans didn't like the exclusion of Max, but I never understood the other fans who ranted about Furiosa as if she were a girlboss.

I don't know how else Miller could have possibly screwed over this character any further to make it more apparent that she had only earned 2 victories after 10 losses, and that the wasteland literally took everything from her until she had just about nothing left.

I don't think girlboss really means anything at this point.

Shame, it is a solid ass action film. Far better (IMHO) than Furiosa, Atomic Blonde, or the other top "girl fight" action films. Certainly FAR better than the streaming stuff like Old Guard, Jolt, Gunpowder Milkshake, etc.
Yeah I enjoyed it, quite a bit. And I'm a right miserable bastard when it comes to 'new' stuff in this day and age

Infact, I'd happily watch it again.

And will!

Biggest plot hole is Why did the leader kill his grand-daughter? That just came out of left field, she was loyal and he just blew up his future. I found that to be a plot hole.

I still like the movie though.

Plot speculation the whole "X" clan felt very cult-like. I'm not sure Byrne was even their biological father so much as a metaphorical one. Or if he was knocking up chicks all over that town. And of course nothing about those guys seemed like it would justify the respect they had from the wick tribe. Then they threw in the notion that the X guys were all retired assassins or whatever, its all nonsense. But it's ok because they had a nice arsenal :P

Aye, good point. This definitely deserves a second watch then, just to be sure I didn't miss something..

Yep, that was actually it (I needed a memory jog then lol)

But aye, it was all clan stuff. Byrne wasn't their real dad.

They establish the relationship early in the movie. I just think they did it so you could see how cold he was, but logically it didn't make sense for the villain to do it.

When he heard they were just talking, he knew the older sister was getting 'corrupted' (from his POV) and was now a liability. Again, very cult-like behavior. If anything, the sister had been besting Eve at every turn, how could a mere grenade kill her? Must have been a nat 20 roll and exploding dice damage :P

She died Cheap.

I did like how much better Wick was than the Ballerina.

Just came out of the movie. I liked it. I wrote more detailed thoughts later, but I put this between 2 and 3.
Story was bit limp and generic and didn't really sympathize with her mission but all the actions bits were on brand, fun and entertaining and she had her own distinct style.

spoiler thoughts

I didn't really sympathize much with the vengeance story. Her father okay whatever, not as much as an innocent dog, her father just a regular assassin casualty. I liked Eve's scenes. She had good energy, liked that she got beat up alot and got roughed up which makes sense. She sucks at guns, and missed every shot that wasn't point-blank or AoE and liked that she put most of her skill pts in throwing stuff and grenades, which was all fun to watch. I cracked up at the scene with the girl in the bar when they kept smashing plates on eachother.

they used John Wick perfectly, I hear they did massive reshoots, no idea what the original scenes were like, but loved that he totally destroyed Eve and pretty had her dead like 10/10 attempts at facing off of him. and then when he fought the regular people in the city, ones that Eve would struggle a bit for a few secs each, he just decimates them in like 10secs flat. So was happy with the power level settings for the movie. the flamethrower climax was awesome and worth the price of admission alone.

Question I have is that given the timeframe...how did John Wick find the time between 2-4 to go on this side-mission. And thought the clan he was apart of cut him off for good. But they call him in on a job anyway in the middle between movies 3 and 4 I guess?

Wasn't that much invested in the sister reveal and death...its like oh these people are in the cult and brainwashed...other than this one family.

I have no idea why these stupid assassins try to break the contiental rules...like even if they succeed, wouldn't the contintela track them down and kill them anyway?

Overall I give it a 8/10

Just got out. It lacked oomph and Eve needed more of a personality. Very bare bones as far as the story goes even for an action flick. Still better than JW2 though.

Saw it yesterday and was about what i expected.

  • As much as i want to believe Ana de Armas is a badass bitch as Eve Macarro, it just doesn't work. She is literally too sweet for badassery.
  • What she does, she does quite alright. More than Wick, Macarro is susceptible to damage: She isn't invincible. However, the damage she does recieve gets mitigated in the next scenes.
  • The FLAMETHROWER is absolutely badass. That was easily the highlight (heh) of the movie and it shows. Really helps.
  • The Shotgun used by Norman Reedus SLAPS. In the cinema, it had incredible oomph and it was thus really satisfying.
  • Wick's interaction is odd at best. This guy is relentless in the Wick movies, is sent out to eliminate Macarro, but lets her live under a condition. I dunno, it felt off.
  • I loved Anjelica Huston (Morticia Addams!) in this. Stone cold, as it should.
  • Hallstadt very much is like a nazi village, or atleast it is run like that.

All in all, solid movie in the Wickerverse, emphasises the female in violence, but the best female counterpart to John Wick remains Atomic Blonde.

her 007 character was excellent for the time and I think she played that rookie agent well.

I saw this. My theater gets early releases often, so I saw it a few days before its official release.

It's a good action flick. Nothing deep. If you like the Wick movies you should enjoy this. Reeves shows up as Wick again and he kicks ass once again.

She's so attractive it's distracting at times. Don't bring your wife or girlfriend. Dudes were literally exclaiming throughout the movie. Like "oh my god she's hot" or just like going "Goooood damn, look at her!".

I feel like there is a subtext going on where she is just a prostitute and all her combat action is code for her wild sexual antics.

This is flopping hard.

Ana De Armas got what it takes, but people wanna see Keanu play Wick in this franchise, not spin-offs.

If movie writers didnt suck dick at writing action movies in our time, Ana De Armas could have been a good action hero.

IMO she's grossly overrated as an actress and as a woman. I can't view her in the role of badass action girl, it's cringe, borderline unwilling parody. Luckily this shit is bombing.

She plays a good role in Blade Runner, though.

Certainly. She is a great sidekick.

In fact, she is a great sidekick in this movie too because Wick really has more aura.

That isn't to say this movie is dogshit, far from it. Its quite a good movie, but it doesn't emphasize what a girlboss/lady killer is. Girlbosses aren't hard ass action heroes, they are a lot more vulnerable and dare to be more emotive. And when they do get serious, they kick absolute ass.

This is what made Atomic Blonde so good - It is still high class action stuff, but it is built with the advantages and disadvantages of a woman in mind. Its more subtle.

In Ballerina, that part is discarded almost entirely and De Armas basically has to act like Wick - But that isn't what works. She is a woman after all. Write the action from a woman's perspective and not a man's perspective.

Disappointed that this is flopping because its far from flop.

What doesn't help is De Armas's babyface. How could someone who played Monroe be as ruthless as Wick?

Exactly.

Clearly havent seen the movie. Its far from what you call it out to be, even when taken a subjective stance.

Top Bottom
